Hello,

My bike runs fine, but a friends one is an all time problem, in less than a 30 mile ride the battery gets completly drained, when i put the ecmspy the charging was showing 14,2 and i'm really lost where the problem is, i'm guessing if it could the the xenon lights he has installed as a pair of cables go direct to the battery i wonder if they are bare and touching some part of the frame.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Few things I would check.

Voltage Regular seems fine at 14.2 but is it connected to the battery? This happened to me when I had the dealer replace my voltage regulator on the M2. 80 miles or so and I was pushing.

Also I would check the battery itself for dead cells. I have had this problem with the first replacement battery on the Uly. It was a non-OEM battery and lasted on six months before I had to replace it. Went back to OEM battery and problem solved.

OMG, any direct connection to the battery should have an in-line fuse.
I think that what you're saying is that the problem only shows up when riding and at a standstill everything is fine. That can be tough. Other than visually inspecting the wiring, do you think you can wire some kind of voltmeter to the system and then take it for a ride?
Just for ha-ha's, how old is the battery?

battery is around one year old, we tested it with my bikes battery and the draining also happened and my battery is fine.
the voltage regulator was changed for the upgraded version so yes it's connected, i'll have to carry on investigating.

thanks for the replies.

"xenon lights he has installed as a pair of cables go direct to the battery" These HID light systems are wired "in line" from the bikes lamp plug. At least the modern slimline type like mine are. Take them off to see if that works.

i know they work on the light switch but i guess the ballasts are wired to the positive battery end, and the lights only work with the ignition turned on.

When did the problem start?

It is possible for the stator to be grounding and still read near normal voltage. Unplug the stator connection to the VR and check each of the (2 or 3) leads for any continuity to ground. It is in the nature of permanent magnet systems like ours that they can output near normal voltage when partially grounded, but not enough amperage to keep things running and charging.

talked to an electrician friend and he is going to test the startor and VR wires, as he said if VR is new then i put my hand in to the fire that is the startor, hope it's that and at least we get that sorted out.
