So, the fan on my 07 Uly died just shy of 30K miles. I got my replacement from American Sportbike (You guys are the best!), and I'm going to install it this weekend. I've got the service manual and it seems like a fairly straight-forward task. Although, it seems like the manual wants me to remove an awful lot of stuff to get to the fan. I searched the forum to see if anyone had posted a how-to thread, but I couldn't find one. Any tips, dos, or don'ts from folks that have already done this?

Change out your 02 sensor while you're in there. Consider relocating your ECM while you've got that awful lot of stuff removed. Don't forget to hook the fan connector back up, it's happened...

This would also be a good time to install the comfort kit, too.

Put all of your new black plastic parts in the sun long enough to get them good and flexy.

I did this change many, many moons ago and remember things were easier once the plastic was good-n-soft. I did the fan replacement (had to, it died) and the comfort kit at the same time.

Some find it easy, I found it was a real pain in the neck rotating that fan just right to get it out from the top. Eventually, if you tilt and turn it just right it comes out believe it or not.

Also, why did your fan die? Usually its due to oil from leaking rocker box gaskets. If thats the case you better address that rather quickly, or be prepared replace the fan again.

The more stuff that you remove, the easier the access. No, you don't have to remove it all, but as I noted, you do get better access.

My old fan came out very easily. So easily that I missed something about the rotations that were necessary.

As you've guessed, putting in the replacement was a pain. When I was finally, really ready to give up, it dropped into place.

Just be patient.

I just did mine a couple days ago, took a couple hours. It was way easier than I expected. I found it easier to get the old one out once I removed the bolt that holds the rear brake reservoir.

Yes,do the o2 sensor because all the same stuff has to be removed.I also found that the comfort kit shroud is much more difficult to remove than install as you can't "sun soften" the piece.I'm the kind of guy that removes as little as possible to complete the task at hand.Sometimes that causes more frustration but makes me feel like I stuck it to the man!

All that stuff comes out rather easily once you get started. I didn't disconnect the battery. There is enough cable to fling it over the left side of the bike with all the other cables, making sure the positive connection is covered, of course. I hung it there with a bungee cord. Take the battery, the ECM and fuse block out with the battery. They all hang off the left side. The battery box comes out very easily at that point.

The other thing that has been mentioned here is the ECM relocate. If you modify the tang on he right end of the battery box, you can nestle the ECM between the Battery and he fuse block. Fits perfectly. Worth doing while you are in there.

At the risk of sounding redundant, put in the shroud for the comfort kit while you are in there. Had not heard about the O2 sensor. I'll do that next time... Because we all know there will be a next time.

I've had that stuff apart twice now. Once for the comfort kit and once to remove the rear shock. Probably a 15 minute job to get at the fan once you've done it a few times.

Not to hijack but. Mine just died too and I have the comfort kit on back order ( already pushed back from promise of 6-29 to end of July) How bad of an idea is it to keep riding until all parts come in? I'm in Indy and south side HD hasn't called me back on availability of fan or gaskets to fix leak that caused bad fan. I called twice today and still can't get an answer.
