Just got back from a 4 hour ride. Noticed a huge amount of heat on my inner thigh while riding. I have read all about this but havent owned the bike but 3 days now. My bike came with the extra air scoop for the right side. There was a raw spot on my leg the size of a baseball from the heat. I'm sure this has been talked to death and I will go research right now.

But the main reason I asked this is I have a ton of exhaust wrap I have used on cars in the past and wanted to know if anyone has ever just wrapped the pipes. Thats where I'm getting my heat I suppose.

Thanks,

I found most of the heat coming from the gap between the seat and the frame on the right side.Along with the comfort kit which includes the right side scoop, I put a foam gasket on the frame about 3/8 inch thick. This made a huge difference

Isn't it 108 degrees where you live?

You may have the scoop, but do you have the shroud that makes up the rest of the kit? Also, the heat shield for the pipe that comes with the kit helps quite a bit.

Yes, pretty freakin hot here. Closing in on 110. It has the scoop only, no other guard I see. I'll see if I can find a pic with showing the pieces you are talking about that go with the scoop. The space between the frame and the seat that you are talking about, I saw a piece that fills that gap for like $20 on ebay. When I get on here this evening I'll try to narrow down where the heat is coming from.

All you need is the complete comfort kit, not just part of it, the EBR ECM to change the fan run cycle and most of all, the Odies Heat Blanket. If you do a search on any of these, you will find tons of info. I ride my 08 XT in any amount of heat and it is no longer an issue. I even rode a little yesterday in 92 degree heat in just shorts, T-shirt, helmet and tennis shoes ( Yeah, I know I'm an idiot ) and had no problems with heat on the right leg. Thanks.

PS Yesterday was the first time in many years that I did not have my gear on and I promise I'll never do it again.

I ride with double layer mesh pants. They insulate from the leg heat pretty well.

You say you have a bunch of exhaust wrap?? Put that around your leg!

Ya can't ride XBs wearing shorts.

xbcris, The comfort kit has the the right side scoop, a heat shield that ataches to the rear header (just below the frame), and a shroud piece under the seat ( it covers the upper end of the shock), and helps keep hot air from the fan away from the under seat area (important). The gap you want to block is the narrow gap at the front of the seat, about 4-5 inches, (weatherstripping). I wouldn't block the hole further back (by the brake resevoir), I think this would hold heat under the seat. My 2 cents.

Ok thanks guys. I love the bike, looks mean as hell, taken it off road already, has a sports bike feel if you push it and it has that all american thump between your legs. One of a kind for sure. Just need to iron out a few things.

By the way, I was reading the new uly owner section and it says there that the comfort kit will fit the 2006 model by the computer can not be flashed. Is that why you guys just get another?

Also, is there vendor section on here, or parts for sale section that I'm not seeing?

Another forum member told me there is a place where I can see local uly riders but havent see that yet either. Thanks

xbkris, I have also thought about using exhaust wrap, but haven't seen much feedback from anyone who has done this. If you do the wrap, post some feedback on how it works out. Also anyone else who has done exhaust wrap, how did it work? Good effects/bad effects?

I second what Razz said. Look at that damn gap on the seat. even with the complete comfort kit I still got burned there. the foam gasket bit worked for me as well

The Odies Heat Blanket completely blocks off that damn gap on the seat. It does more to control the heat than any other mod will ever do. No, I don't work for Odies and there is no money in it for me. Just sayin.............

The reason we just get another ECM is because they break. Some also get one just as a simple, turnkey solution for an FI map that will be in the ballpark for their desired mods. 2008+ bikes apparently run much better with the EBR ECM (and the unit is not so easily tuned as the pre-08's), so many people get the EBR for their 08+ bikes.

The ECM on the 2008 is different than the 06. The reflash you are referring to changes the fan logic on the '08+ bikes so that is on all the time after 15mph or something like that. I don't think it affects the amount of heat getting to the rider at all and more to do with owners complaining about fan noise when at a stop.

FWIW, the pre-08 ECMs are easily tunable with an application called ecmSpy so long as you know what you are doing, and I suggest you muster up a copy of the program if you haven't already so you can do basic necessities like check trouble codes and reset your TPS.

I had a half used roll of exhaust wrap here at the house so I put it on the pipes. Its black and my bike is black and it turned out looking real nice! I've used this stuff on cars a ton and it help a bunch. I tied the bike down in the bed of my truck tonight to take it to gatlinburg for the next five days. I will let you guys know soon if it worked or not as I plan on riding through the mountains a alot.

Only thing that I'm kinda worried about is after reading the new uly section, I realize that I have the bike pulled down tight with straps in the truck. Very tight! Its not going anywhere but that strap force is putting alot of pressure on the not so good kickstand.

Maybe I can get some pics of the mountain ride!

Now to find out about this tps reset. Kris

Probably best if you can tie it in the back of your truck with the kick stand up.

Wrapping the exhaust header can come with it's own problems. Holding that heat in the header is going to change the magnitude of thermal expansion forces. Wrapping the header has been done by a few but not a lot. There may be some connection to cracked header connections. Maybe some searching in the archives would bring up some of these reports.

I can feel a hot spot with light pants but with a more substantial material I hardly notice it. I have the full comfort kit in place but that is all. If I do feel it, I can usually rotate my leg out a bit but I rarely ride in temps over 95 degrees.

I wrapped the header pipes, installed the comfort kit, insulated the inside of the right frame/tank and under the seat. The biggest bang for the buck, was a little self stick automotive weatherstrip, 'D' shaped, placed on top of the frame where the seat meet it. That gap produced a blast furnace of heat at certain speeds. The exhaust wrap has produced no ill effects in the last two years / 16,000 miles. Comfort kit was worth it too. Wrapped the headers starting with the rear pipe at the O2 sensor, then down to the collector and back up the front pipe. Minimal clamps, looks good, works well. Was a pain, as I did it in one full length, but that way I was able to use clamps at the heads only. Wet the wrap, use rubber or latex gloves... the 'glass' in the wrap will end up in your fingers otherwise... DAMHIK...
The newer fan logic seems to work well, but I kind of wish it still did the cool down for a minute or so at shutdown (Buell trademark). Only does that when it's really cookin' on a hot day... otherwise the fan only runs above 10 or 15 mph.

I don't think it affects the amount of heat getting to the rider at all

I will have to argue this point. I pulled the EBR ECM back off my 08 XT and reinstalled the stock unit for debug purposes. I took the bike out for a short ride and within 10 minutes I could tell there was a lot more heat coming from the rear cylinder area. I went back to the garage and installed the EBR ECM, went for another ride and the heat was not a problem. Big difference!

By having that fan running at any speed over 15 MPH, it is bound to keep that rear cylinder cooler. I will never go back to the old fan program. Besides, that fun running every time the bike was shut off sucked. I got sick of explaining it to people who have never heard of a Buell. Thanks.

That makes good sense, Motorbike. Thanks. My 2008XT, with the Comfort Kit and re-flash is not blowing hot air on me, even here in hot South Texas! The fan blowing constantly really seems to keep the motor cooler, at least on my bike!

I've only had mine for a couple months, but my first few rides had me thinking this bike would not be a keeper as the heat on my leg was too much. I was going to do a few of the things suggested here, then I looked at it while I had it apart for other things and noticed that there was a triangular gap in the frame right where the seat meets the air box cover. I covered the gap with hvac aluminum tape and the heat issue is no more.

I have found it best to not ride around with my thighs in a death grip with the bike, especially when it's hot out. If I feel like it's getting too hot on that right side, I just put a few inches of space between my right knee and the frame briefly and it cools right off. I have no comfort kit or heat blanket and have never had a problem even in 100+ temps.
Also, I never hold my hand in a fire.
Sorry for the sarcasm in that last sentence but I just have a hard time imagining someone holding their leg against that hot spot till it blistered. Maybe my Uly doesn't get as hot as his. (I doubt it)
