Well I finally figured out what all you people have been bitching about over the last few years. Last night I had a lady friend on the back. No big deal, except I have no passenger foot pegs, so I rode with my legs dangling. In order to give her room to my pegs, I had to hold my legs pretty much right next to the motor. Also, to give her confidence I wouldn't be a tool, I was squidding it up wearing a tshirt and shorts (no flipflops). To top it off, my shifter broke a few hours earlier, so I was stuck putting around at 25mph in first gear till she got the hang of things so I would be able to pull over and put it in 3rd. Needless to say, a combo of all the above resulted in my right leg turning nice and red, and missing some hair. How dare Buell design a bike when used in this fashion can result in rider discomfort? Time to trade it in for the 1125XT. | ||

For long trips I throw a sheep skin over the entire seat and it drapes down past the seat on each side up front. Never feel anything heat-wise and the sheep fleece is so darned thick it's a great cushion. Bought years ago in the Old Market section of Omaha, NE. Full Sized New Zealand sheepskin. When I'm camping and chilly I throw it over me to sleep. | ||

On a serious note - I have recently wrapped my pipes with DEI Titanium exhaust wrap with LR (as in lava rock) technology. http://www.designengineering.com/products.asp?m=sp &pid=95 The wrap combined with the Max blanket I got from Special Ops is working well for me. I was out Sunday, the fan was running quite a bit and I didn't feel a thing. The real test is going to be a 90+ degree day, but I'm confident the combination will beat the heat. The titanium wrap looks good (well, as good as wrapped pipes can look) - better than the standard tan or black. I'lll post pics if anyone is interested. | ||

Here's what my right leg looked like on Saturday night after riding most of the day through the Adirondacks at about 45-55 mph most of the day. Please excuse the hairiness as I haven't shaved this week.  It wasn't very hot out (77 F I think I saw on a bank thermometer). We were two up, and the bike was still in the break in mileage - we went from about 500 to 800 miles on the bike - but it wasn't too pleasant on the leg. When we were riding on straight roads, it was easy to pop my leg out to let a little breeze in there, but on the twisties, I naturally found myself with my leg up against the hot frame. I sure am hoping that once it's fully broken in, and once I put some synthetic oil in there that the heat will subside. Otherwise, I think some heat barrier will be required on the inside part of the frame. BTW, I was wearing jeans, which is what I've worn on all my bikes for the past 20 years. | ||

I've roasted my right leg more times than I'd like to remember on my beast. I recently wrapped the pipes with HD's ceramic cloth tape and got a minor improvement, but it's still way too hot for south Texas weather. Has anyone tried using a richer fuel mapping device, Power Commander, etc. to cool it down a bit? | ||

Now that the weather is warming up and I'm wearing lighter-weight pants, I'm getting the pricklies on my right inner thigh from the rear cylinder heat escaping through the slot between frame and seat on my XT. I know a few on here have blocked that gap with good results, and I may do likewise soon. | ||

trevd......bad news is even after break in the Uly will continue to roast your right leg. No doubt in my mind the heat output to the rider on the right side of the XB/Uly is a big negative for the bike as a whole. It is beyond comparison to any heat I have experienced on a whole bunch of air/oil cooled motos. And at one point I thought the HD electra glide was hot during parade duty. Uly raises that mark by a notch or two! It took a combination of: Synthetic oil RSS THermotec laminated to the inside of the fuel rail/frame Odie Full Heat Blankets Alternate exhaust duct for fan until I "felt" significant reduction in discomfort from the heat. Happy camper now. | ||

After blocking the gap, I think the frame just gets hotter in retaliation. Low 90's today, and I can't remember a 40 minute commute being this warm.  | ||

I had her on the back of my bike a few weeks ago for my birthday. She was scared and I could barley even go fast enough to release the clutch in first. Now the other night she wasn't so scared, and after a few minutes she was warming up to it (so was my leg). She kept telling me to go faster, so I had to pull over and rig the shifter to get it to second. After about 20 minutes of doing laps around in her university, she wanted to go out on the roads. Needless to say I complied; she loved it and is hooked. We ended up staying out for a few hours, and then a thunderstorm came and drenched us. You don't realize how awesome a Roadcrafter 1 piece is till you get burned and drenched in the same ride! Anyway, because I got soaked and everything, I ended up staying for the night in her dorm instead of going 120 miles back home. I almost ended up being late for work because we were up late. | ||

for about the last week or so it's been in the 50's on my ride home at night. Could I PLEASE borrow some of your guy's engine heat? I'd l'd like to figure out a way to get some heat for the left leg because it seems to get neglected on these cold night rides! Is there anyway to get a diverter to shoot some of that heat to the left side? When I had my old 1998 Cyclone, I use to ride with my right leg against the header to help keep me warm on night rides. Maybe we could get the rear pipe to route out over the frame again?  | ||

So what if it looks like I have a dead Newfie dog on my saddle. At least my leg doesn't look like Froggy's. My arse thanks me too. | ||

I have a sheepskin cover from my Kawasaki that I have not tried yet on my Buells. My touring mates give me a rash of heck about my wookie saddle, but I'm the only one without monkeybutt at the end of a 500-mile day. Talc helps, too. |
