I just bought my uly yesterday. Check engine light came on and off during test drive. I asked the previous owner about it and he said that it never came on until he sent his exhaust to some franklin gentleman to have it modified.

Bike runs like a champ, just has that annoying light.

Is this normal, going to search how to read codes now. Thanks in advance. Kris

Been a forum member now for one day and have already found some good info.

Read about the seat touching the ecm. So after I washed the bike I pulled the seat. Found three bare wires where the seat had rubbed through the out coating of the wire. Fixed that, then can see where the seat is rubbing the connector on the ecm. Ecm move will be my next fix.

Thanks for this forum!!!

What did the PO get done to the exhaust?.
Could be Muffler valve not working/disconnected throwing the code.

Hi Kris. Congrats on the new bike. I saw on your profile your near Nashville. There are several long time Buell riders in your area. I'm over in Knoxville.

My 2008 Uly had the check engine light on due to a bad muffler valve actuator. If it wasn't the wires, Your bike should be throwing a code that will tell you what's up. If you don't have one of the diagnostic kits, I'd pick one up or see if you can borrow one. The guys at Bumpus HD are Buell friendly and can help too.

Good luck and enjoy the ride. Now we just need a break in the heat.

The PO said that there is some well known guy in southern tennessee or northern georgia that alot of people send there exhaust to. He supposedly does something to the inside to change the sound, performance etc. I could swear his last name was franklin.

I will look for the wires you are talking about.

Orangeulies, Are the guys you are talking about forum members? I texted the PO last night after posting this thread and he said he took it to harley and they said something about the fuel map might be off due to the exhaust change.

I hear ya on the heat man!!

Kris, make sure you are logged in and you will see the BRAN "Buell riders assistance network" just below the guest book. It's a little dated but contains contact info for several people in your area who are or were available to assist other riders.

OK, thanks. I'll see if I can find that.

Just got back from a 4 hour ride and I noticed for the last hour or so the light was off and stayed off. Who knows?

Ill be in your neck of the woods tuesday night thru sunday. I got a little condo in gatlinburg. Gonna go up there and hang for the fourth.

If he had the exhaust sent to Black Ops or similar, they likely gutted and shortened the stock exhaust and removed the muffler valve, which will throw a code if you do nothing more about it.
Best bet is to follow the service manual procedure and flash out the stored codes to verify if that is the code.
It's pretty easy with a simply wire jumper and no special reader is needed.
Service manual is worth it's weight in gold. Even at today's gold prices!
You can also just add a spacer to the rear ECM bolt rather than move the ECM.
Make sure you check out the "New Owner" page. It is worth even more than the service manual and it's free!

I have read so much about these bikes I think info is running out my ears and I'm loosing some. lol. I will look tonight when I get home about adding the rear spacer and see if i can see what you are talking about. I'm gonna have to get a manual for sure. I have spent a ton of time today trying to find the info for oil and primary oil change. Still havent found what oil to use on the primary. Is that a gear oil.

Don't use gear oil. The primary and transmission use the same oil but gear oil contains a chemical that will attack your stator causing it to short out. Harley sells primary oil that many use. Amsoil recommends their V=twin 20/50 engine oil. I use their 60 wt. engine oil. Basically anything but gear oil! Good luck on your light issue, I hope it's a cheap fix!

Manual will tell you to use H-D Formula+ in the primary (trans). Many run normal 20W50 or similar engine oils, regular or synthetics.
True gear oil (GL-5) is to be avoided as mentioned above.
Manual will tell you 20W50 for engine oil for most conditions. It will also tell you to use H-D branded oil (for no really good reason IMHO), or to use CI type oils (diesel oil for heavy trucks, usually 15W40 for regular or 5W40 for synthetic) as a backup option.
The diesel oils are worth considering if you are not wanting to pay for synthetic. they have a robust additive package, without the extreme friction reducers, and big brands like Rotella (Shell) and Delvac (Mobil) are readily available for prices less than normal car oils (especially if you buy them by the gallon).
