I was in the local Walmart yesterday (Brea) and they had one 5 qt bottle of Mobil 1 15w-50. They haven't had any for at least 6 months, not even a bin tag, but now they do. It was $26.48. Grabbed it and had my wife take a picture of the label with her phone. She'll be watching for it from now on. They also had single quarts at 8.69(!) each. | ||

Was that the "V Twin" oil, or automotive stuff? Here, they frequently ran out of the 20-50 V Twin specific oil. At Wally World they said the department manager is in charge of what oils they stock. So I asked why the random restocking of it. He said that they did not sell enough of it. So I asked him why it was then that they are out of it all of the time?  They can, and usually will, order it for you. | ||

Motorcycle specific oil is a seasonal item! They only stock it for 3 weeks at the end of winter! | ||

Y'all...I know Paul has the world record mileage on his Uly and is a Mobile One guy. But I had this conversation yesterday with a local V-Twin shop owner/mechanic who retired from HD after 30 years. Does not have much use for HD except Syn3. He told me that the extreme heat of our twins varnishes the Mobil One/Amsoil bunch. He has pulled many "glued" ones apart. It is made for water-cooled temps. Whatever! | ||

If your engine is running past the flash point of synthetic oil, it seems like you will likely have bigger and faster problems than oil coking (varnish, burn off, what have you). If you believe Mobil, they publish the flash point of Mobil 1 15W50 as 232C (449F). Pretty toasty. | ||

That fellow is smoking something funny. Mobil 1, and all synthetics will avoid coking to a much higher temperature than regular oil, the kind that H-D said to use UNTIL they got an H-D branded syn. They dont' make the stuff, someone like Mobil, or Valvoline or Amsoil makes it for them. Sounds like a variation on the old,"makes the bearings skid" story. | ||

The API rating on this oil is SL,SM,SN. All my new '12 Bonneville requires is 15w-50 synthetic SJ (bought the Bonnie for reliable transportation while the Buell gets repaired). I don't believe I ever saw an API rating requirement for our Buells, but I'll bet (did, in fact) that it is plenty good. From what I've seen of the inside of the engine at 105k it's excellent. | ||

The oil requirement for a Triumph Bonnie is different to the Buell. Triumph recommends a 15-50 synthetic for the Thruxton/Bonnie engines but doesn't state it has to be for air cooled engines (the wonders of modern tolerances). Your Buell needs a 20-50W oil and should really be Mobil 1 V-Twin and NOT the automobile Mobil 1, as the spec and additives are completely different. | ||

Try Pep Boys. I bought all the Castrol 20-50 V-Twin they had on the shelf at my local one a few weeks ago for @ $8.50 a quart. | ||

I think the articles I've read indicate that auto oil has Zinc removed for emission controls or something. Personally, I just run straight non-synth oil. I figure it's more likely that the bike gets ruined by a left-turning corolla than by normal engine wear. | ||

Hey! I nearly hit one of those today! They left turned right into my path without putting any effort into looking past the truck that was blocking their view. Seemed like they were playing the odds that there was no one coming through that blind spot. I was glad that I saw them as I was coming up on the intersection. They made me fully function test my brakes. | ||

Pretty much exactly what happened to me. She couldn't see, and it was after all a Friday, so she figured she might as well just gas it. What could go wrong? I did a nice brake test also, doing a perfectly executed evasive stoppie into her rear quarter panel. The first thing that touched her car was my mirror (you can see the mark by her door). That picture gives me the heebie jeebies still. Oh, back on topic, I was running Valvoline full synthetic 20w50 when that Corolla driver tried to kill me and (among other things) sheared the mounts for my rear head. So I can say conclusively, Valvoline 20w50 does not offer good protections against psychopaths in corollas. Glad I could help. | ||
