I'm about to tear down my Uly to replace the starter clutch.

I can hear the selonoid kick in and the starter runs but the engine does not turn over.

Al at American Sport Bike does not carry starters and related parts because they are Harley-Davidson parts, so I'm forced to pay my $ to my local dealer for a new starter clutch. The cost is $131. To their credit they have the part in stock, but they have to order the starter gasket......go figure.

I haven't heard of many starter clutchs failing. Has anyone else had this problem or offer me some advise before I tear into my bike?

I have a shop manual and am familiar with removing the primary cover to get to the starter bolts. anything else I should know?

Thanks

Yup. Mine just failed on my '08 with 25K miles. I ended up buying a complete Japanese Denso model to replace it instead of repairing or replacing with stock unit. Replacement is 1.4KW instead of the stock's 1 KW. Turns much faster and starts the motor without any of the hesitancy of the stock unit. It was sent immediately, and cost 139 bucks. Can't go wrong there. (I would have replaced just the clutch, but couldn't locate one where I've been in Brazil.)

This is the link, if you're interested: http://www.rareelectrical.com/p-9604-new-starter-m otor-buell-xb9r-firebolt-xb9s-lightning-xb12r-xb12 s-xb12xt-ulysses.aspx

Pulling the starter is pretty straightforward once you get the primary cover off. You'll need to clear all the wires and tubing on the belt-side to pull it out. It's a pretty darn tight squeeze.

Thanks for the link, D Bird.

I’m going to order the Denso starter. I believe it’s a Japanese manufactured part, but Denso makes quality stuff. The stock starter clutch has failed so just replacing it another stock part dosen’t make sense.

The stock starter assembly costs $375 through my local dealer. The Denso starter is about $138. The stock clutch alone is $131. A no brainer……..especially since I’ll get a remove and replace part with no disassembly and repair of my old starter.

Has anyone else besides D Bird tried the Denso starter??

Hi Guys, I think my starter clutch has failed as well. I have the same symptoms as you Debueller. Is the starter clutch part of the same unit as the starter itself? If it is it definitely make more sense to go down the same path you guys have done.}
