Hey Fellow Uly Riders,

Searched a few forums and can't find any info on the topic. My new-to-me, 2008 Uly XT likes to rev up about 500-700 RPMs when I feather the clutch when I'm stopped. I even took my right hand off the throttle to see if it was me, and it's not. As I let the clutch out, the revs increase a bit.

Anyone else experience this?

Is this an, 'anti-stall' feature built into the bike?

Not that big of a deal, but kinda made me wonder. Am I alone? Crazy? high on v-twin fumes?

Congrats on the Uly purchase!

So you're saying with the bike in gear, if you let the clutch out slowly, the RPM's increase?

The 2008-up XB's (and 1125's for that matter) have an Idle Air Valve (IAV) just like most modern cars. When you release the throttle, the butterfly in the throttle body completely closes (unlike a carbureted engine) and the IAV opens to "bleed" a little air around it to keep the engine running. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the engine RPM, and tries to hold it at the desired value (~1,050 RPM IIRC) by modulating the IAV as long as you're not opening the throttle. If you ease out on the clutch the IAV will open to allow more air into the engine to keep the engine from slowing down. I wouldn't expect it to speed up, but I guess it might over-compensate a little.

This feature can come in handy; I was able to walk my 1125CR up a ramp by feathering the clutch like this since the engine would hold steady RPM even under load.

Its probably clutch plate drag from the springs or binding. Take it to a dealer. I am sure they would like to be seen as first rate rather than a third grade person.

Actually it is. Your 2010 has it too. The bike has idle map, similar to the fuel and timing maps, but it controls the idle speed differently depending on clutch state and being in neutral or not. It automatically raises the idle a bit when you let the lever out.

Pull in and release your clutch lever. You can hear the microswitch engaging and disengaging.

There is a switch on the handlebar that senses if the clutch is in or out, the same switch is used for the safety that prevents you from starting in gear. I don't recall how much it affects the XB as its been a while since I rode a 08+, but on the 1125 some of the riders prefer to disconnect the switch as it makes gear changes easier due to the bike not dropping to idle as fast.

In 7 years, I have had to tow, just one car (on Christmas Day! I felt bad, but it passed). But people block my driveway often.

Oh yeah, and thanks for the info on the clutch/idle relationship.

Mhevezi, my 08XT does exactly as yours does. It has done this since brand new. At first I thought I was imagining this but I figured out later it was really doing this on it's own.

Oh, by the way, your bike is really an X, not an XT, right?

It has the beak fender, headlight guard, short windshield and mag colored wheels. Of course, all of these could be added to an XT to change the look. I still think it's an X with bags.

And the winner is...

XT, with the X, front end.

I thought it was an X when I was scoping it out, but it is an XT- I ran the VIN and yep. It even says, "XB12XT" on the Triple Tail.

The previous owner put the X front end on it, and I like that look a little better than the standard XT look. I do have the black, XT fender, if I want to change it.

I think my GF is a little jealous of my new ride....

Nah,

To my knowledge, it's just cosmetic. Seems to have to ride height & ground clearance of an XT.

Sure is a nice steed. Can't wait to open up the intake and exhaust.

Forks match the triple trees. IIRC, XT has 43mm forks and the X has 47mm. I'd like to have the beefier and taller X suspension on my XT, but not enough to spend the time and money swapping parts. I'd probably end up dropping it with the extra seat height though. At 5'8", it's a bit of a stretch already.

It's a fairly common event for me to have to swallow my pride and push the bike backwards out of a slight downhill parking space. Can't push off on the ground enough from the seat to back the bike up
