I bought a 2006 Uly in April 2011. Problems started in about August. It started with the lights cutting in and out. Took it to a local shop (not a HD dealer) and they fixed that issue. A couple weeks later, the lights blew out completely. It blew out new light bulbs right away. Took it in the HD dealership and they found the stator and regulator were bad. So, those were replaced. A couple weeks later the bike completely died on me while riding. Coasted to the side of the road and found that there was no power going to the gauges and nothing happened when I flipped the kill switch back and forth. So back the HD dealership. They say there is a broken or shorted wire somewhere that is blowing a couple fuses. They say it is very labor intensive to track down the problem and maybe better to buy new wiring harness. Of course, they can't locate a new wiring harness. Curious on thoughts here, and if anyone knows where to find a new wiring harness, should I go that route. Thanks. | ||

If memory serves me right I remember someone talking about the harness behind the gauge cluster pinching between the forks and the frame, I would look there first. | ||

Bypass your ignition switch. Check the wire from the voltage regulator to the battery where it runs near the starter; there's a bullet connector that sometimes comes loose. Replace your starting and ignition relays. | ||

Its not that hard to find an electrical problem on a simple bike like the Uly. Find a mechanic with a clue and you'll be set in a jiffy. | ||

There's a splice between the forks and the frame. It moves when you turn the bars. It likes to go bad apparently (although with 27k mine is still doing fine). | ||

If the fuse blowing is repeatable and these guys can't find the reason then you would have to question their skill level. Do you know which 'couple of fuses' are blowing? It should be possible to talk you through the steps needed to do some isolation to something more specific that the entire harness. | ||

New wiring harness is probably still available from your dealer, but it's NOT cheap ($300+) and it is NOT easy to change out. | ||

Thank you all for the responses. The bike is currently still at the dealership, though they aren't doing any work on it at the moment. They are trying to locate a new wiring harness ($350), which are apparently back ordered through HD. So, who knows if they will even be able to find one. From what I have read, this particular dealership was *supposed* to be one of the better ones in the LA area for Buell service. I am debating whether the have it towed back to my place and trying to figure it out myself. I'm really not much of a mechanic, so I'm not sure how well that would turn out. Its my only vehicle and my wife will be rather unhappy if I have to use her car for an extended period of time. I guess this is why a lot of guys have multiple motorcycles. So the big question is whether this is something that a guy with very little experience can figure out and fix? | ||

I don't know the specific fuses that are blowing. I think they said the ignition and something else. I will find out from them if I ultimately have it towed back home. |
