I just wanted to report I got back yesterday from my annual trip up to NC. Rode the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Cherohala Skyway, the Dragon, and lots of other roads covering five states (Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina). Shortest day was about 200 miles, longest one around 425 miles.

Pushed the bike hard (for me) in the mountains. Rode it as aggressively as I am comfortable riding on the street, and had absolutely no problems. No broken belts, no bad bearings, no ECM issues, nothing.

The bike was loads of fun and fairly comfortable to top it off. Not Electra Glide comfortable, but pretty comfortable. By the end of the days on the boring roads I was thinking the seat could be addressed, and I was a bit jealous of the highway pegs of some of the guys riding with me.

In the mountains, though, I was very happy to be on my bike. It is just about perfect for me.

Oh, I did have some fun chasing an Aprilia Futura in the mountains through South Carolina and into North Carolina. The Uly was up to it, but I didn't have the guts to pass some of the cars he did in the curves so he got away from me. I caught him again at a gas station. I was not familiar with the Futura, but it looked like a really nice bike.

Congrats on your kickass adventure! My longest trip so far is about 3000 miles, and the bike performed flawlessly. Get the palmer highway pegs. Not as comphy as EG high way pegs, but they do help. You can address the seat with beads / gelpad / sheeppad.

The beautiful thing about these bike, is that they really are meant to be ridden. And ridden far. Not just sit in a garage some where and look good.

"By the end of the days on the boring roads I was thinking the seat could be addressed. . ."

Agreed, always thought the OEM seat was fine, until a few hundred miles days consecutively.

Here's a cheap solution I used on my recent adventure - - I had never priced one of the "Air Hawk" or other pads, but saw one while replacing a rear tire while on the road and was surprised at the $150 price tag.

Not too shabby for $20, fits the seat pretty well w/o modification. . .

I live in Colorado, but made a trip to the east coast this summer and rode the entire blue ridge parkway. It was absolutely amazing. Best "riding" road I've ever been on. hour upon hour upon hour of 40-60mph turns over and over.

I have the beads and sheepskin, and while they help, the seat is still not as comfortable as the Mustang on my Super Glide.

Pnw, what is that you are using and where did you find it? Thanks.

Dan - I picked up the pad at Wal-Mart, in the automotive section. It's just a car seat pad, but when inverted the backwards profile fit the Uly saddle well (or at least well enough). . .

Looped the pad strap through the Fast-Ex buckle for my my tank bag, which kept it from departing the bike whenever I stood on the pegs or parked.

Probably one of the best $20 mods I've ever made. . .

Dynasport,

You mention the Futura in your first post. It is a nice machine and is comfortable for all day touring as well as being an excellent handling bike with plenty of power ( more than my Uly anyway).
I have both and count myself fortunate to own two fine machines.

Awesome. . . But I guess that "Pre-2008 Crank Failure Phobia" must keep you pretty close to the house . . .

Yesterday I got back from a 3700 mile trip to Houston from Maryland. Stopped at a friend's house in Friendsville TN on the way home and we rode the area on Wednesday including a trip to Pandora's BMW where I got to ride a new K1600GTL...but I digress...

The Uly ran great the entire trip. IMO it's more comfortable than that K1600 I rode. The Uly is a real mile muncher. 800 mile days are easy.

Pretty much the only things I'd like to change are the 140 mile fuel stops (when cruising 80+ for mile after mile) and the few minor oil leaks that Sportster lump always seems to have.....

Rwven, although I've been without a Uly for many months now, I still check the posts. Interesting to see you were just down the road from me in Friendsville on your recent trip. Hopefully I'll have a replacement Uly by next spring. Let me know if you head this way in 2012. We'll hook up with Etennuly. Got some great roads you may not have explored yet.
