I would think that Erik Buell should make available some parts like the throttle body shaft. Shouldn't have to purchase 400 bucks worth of crap just to replace a 50 dollar part. Also to do more than just admit 07 crankshafts were crap. He was in charge when those bikes were built and makes money off Buell folks to this day on all those ECM's, and brake parts and other parts. To sit on the sidelines and let Harley take all the credit for failures of HIS bikes is pretty lame. Flame on.

Let's see 52,000+ miles on the Uly
Throttle body, ecm, rear wheel bearings,a belt, fork seals and lots of tires.
For giving me my favorite bike ever, Erik doesn't owe me a thing.
HD owns the company, Someday down the line when Erik Buell Racing is successful hopefully there will be upgraded parts available from Erik Buell Racing. I'm sure Erik has plenty on his plate

Wow, quite possibly the most ignorant post on the Uly board!

If it failed under warranty, you're covered. If not....well, your bike isn't under warranrty, whaddaya want??

all Buell XB motors were purchased from Harley-Davidson Motors and aside from Erik having his name on the bike, I don't know how much he had to do with the motor design. I didn't know anything about the 07 crankshafts having a problem. Sounds like the HD Motor Company decided to cheapen their parts by changing suppliers or something like that to make extra profit on the motors they were selling to the Buell Motorcycle Company. My 2006 Uly is still rock solid motorcycle with 35,000 on it.

as far as Erik getting involved in making parts for the old XB engines, I think that would just open a can of worms and create more head aces than it would be worth for his new motorcycle company. I just don't see that happening! Just my $0.02 worth.

EG, I hear what you're saying, but all bikes are high maintenance.

Erik was forced into a lot the decisions he made - or that were made for him by HD. I'm sure He did the best he could under the circumstances.

HD has become a mass marketing merchandise-driven lifestyle company that just so happens to make motorcycles. Their motorcycles are just a means to an end. And that is? To turn us all into pirates - consuming all of their logo laden freedom spouting crap.

Would Hope that Erik Does continue to support His XB's, especially "critical" parts that show flaws, However the 07 Crank pin bearing flaw that has made a limited showing is ALL on the Motor Company, and Good Luck with That.

b - your just being obnoxious now. Obviously Froggy is stating his opinion as are all of us out here ... some with more data and experience than others. One thing I do know is that saying "you yap a Lot" is just wasting space. I've read countless posts from Froggy trying to help people (me included) and I would guess that he is on the high side of the curve when it comes to knowledge about Buell. Personally, I think his argument makes a lot of sense … my opinion of course. I’m not claiming to represent him in case anyone is confused by that.

Duly noted.
have mostly lurked for a long time, aware of the "politics" here...
EG_1997 Not out of line, NOT "ignorant".
Concerned 07 Owner, as am I.
Absolutely NO reason for Erik Buell Racing not to carry small fixes for longterm issues such as the Improved Throttle shaft.
Support "His" Design as He Can.
Froggy is from Joysey, been there, done that...
"Obnoxious" is a point of Pride there.
Sure he can handle it.

Ps.

I'm sure he can as well, and I agree 100% that it would be great if there were more parts available. Here's to hoping that there still might be at some point. I want to keep my Uly up and going for a long time. My 10 year old son is already saying that he wants my wife's 450 for his 1st bike and assuming that I find something I can afford later to replace the Uly I would love to pass that on to him as well for his first bike that will do more than cruise around.

Craig posted his concerns about a Uly problem and as long as everybody doesn't start posting crap about politics and start name-calling, we can keep this a civil motorcycle discussion board.

I have NEVER in my lifetime EVER met anybody who cared more about motorcycles than Erik Buell. If there was anything he could legally do to help solve a problem with a certain motorcycle, I think he would do it. But since The Buell Motorcycle was closed and shut down by Harled-Davison and Erik has left the company to pursue other interest (like starting his own Erik Buell Racing Racing Company), I don't feel there is anything he can legally do to sell parts for another companies motorcycles that owns all the patients for their motorcycles.

easy, he already is.
no big deal, aftermarket.
nuttin to do with "Warranty"... "patent's"... or "legal restrictions".
That, if YOUR lucky enough, is All Motor Co.
the 07 Crank "issue" looks to be just a short run "Jigging" fixture slip somewhere in the process's, and SHOULD
be an "Honor" thing for SOMEBODY... but not likely in the present no honor "corp" way of "Business".
no big.

I just want to keep ridin my Uly.........

Some fair comments made but here is one thing to think about. There have been many other bikes in the past, still are, that have parts problems. Bad cams, cranks, regulators etc and many of the bike makers have not helped the owners very much.

I only had a belt and rear bearings changed under warranty, with no problems, but then again my dealer was one of the best in the UK. They do all the talking with HD over warranty stuff so they need to be good and on your side.

Yes bikes are always high maintenance but the Uly is the lowest I have ever had. Mine was a belt every 7500 miles. We in the UK/EU pay near twice the price for a belt than the US but I get about 50% more miles out of the rubber, more MPG and cheap insurance, compared to a similar bike, which has easy covered the cost on a chain system.

I would be pissed if my crank went but these things can happen. Nothing is perfect. Apart from anything else if you realy want to just about anything can be fixed. It is only about cost and how much you want it.

Ulys seem to have become a more sought after bike, in the UK, over the past few years. It may be why my 06 bike was stolen.
I have had loads of bikes and never had the same one twice but I have with the Uly. Nothing else came close for the money.

Come on guys. Just stirring the pot and it had its intended affect. But, there is nothing stopping Erik Buell Racing from offering an updated throttle body shaft. He is offering 6mm thick front brake rotors and also OEM rotors. Sometimes the worshiping at the Erik Buell altar gets out of hand on this website and I think it is important to give him something to think about once in awhile if he or one of his minions actually reads this site. I really have very, very little to moan about since our two ULY's have been relatively trouble free.

And one more time about Buell and Harley Davidson. Erik worked for Harley, bought Harley engines to make his first production bikes, and then let Harley in the door because they had the money to make things really happen for Buell. Without Harley we wouldn't ever had seen a ULY. I'm hoping Erik Buell Racing prospers enough to actually bring the AX to market. I'll most likely be one of the first buyers since there is no way I'm buying a Duc,Bmw or Jap bike. Ducs and BMW think their bikes are too golden and Jap bikes are not on my radar screen ever again. I do like the way Kawasaki does things though but have never owned one. Hopefully I haven't caused anyone here to go into grand mal seizures or Anaphylaxis over my comments.

You are mistaken, but I have no way of proving you wrong.

Yep, he is reselling some stuff he bought from the Moco.

http://www.erikbuellracing.com/store/models/xb12.h tml

Everything on there is a race part, used takeoff, or leftovers from the BMC Race department. There are no OEM rotors as you have mentioned. There is a handful of aftermarket goodies like the gas caps, but he is reselling them with racers in mind who would rather ditch the key. Developing a new throttle body shaft, while not impossible, is just asking for trouble from HD.

Ah, The throttle body shaft. I have kept quiet on this subject to the point on biting my tongue at supper. Some one has made a clunky shaft. Sure it looks nice and is heavy duty. It takes up twice the space of an OEM shaft in the air flow to the cylinders. Part looks pretty. I'll give it that. But I ride what I ride for the performance side also. Show me the dyno results comparing the OEM to the aftermarket shafts. Until then quit trying to give people the shaft. R.D.

I thought the presentation of the shaft at Roma's to be in poor taste. I commend Erik on showing restraint and not pitching it. Just for the record.

I doubt there is any prohibition against anyone making and selling parts for anything as long as it's not patent protected. There are whole industries committed to exactly that for lots of different products.
While it would be great for Erik Buell Racing to produce upgraded parts for our motorcycles I absolutely understand they have bigger fish to fry.
Filling a niche is what Tootal is going to do, and what others will do as they see opportunity. As for it being clunky- I think it will be the most beautiful shaft ever as long as it doesn't break. It will be making way more power than the two piece OEM shaft jamming the throttle body of the Uly you just passed on the side of the road. Go ahead- ask me how I know this.

Let me see here. Some wacky something in the air of this thread.

If I own a business with my NAME on it, I sell said business to a larger business who keeps me on as CEO of their new business with my NAME on it. The economy takes a crap, their unwise moves in other parts of their big company makes the part they bought from me appear to be a detriment. They can my ass for not saving the whole company(maybe that would have helped)from financial ruin, then they gut the company's division they bought from me, still owning the use of my name on the product.

Now I am at home trying to figure out how to beat unemployment benefits. I start a totally new separate unlinked company. I cannot use my NAME because I sold the rights to that to the company who still holds it. I happen to make a new product that is similar to the ones they discontinued. My business with them is done. The use of my NAME is done. That is no longer any part of my life, except that it was a historically awesome job, we made some neat stuff that I did not own, I was an employee.

To what do I owe THEIR customers for parts and warranty on THEIR machines, that happen to retain the NAME they own. I got canned, that business closed, period. The machines produced in the past are 100% THEIR liability. THEY own that.

This is the dumbest thread I have ever seen on BadWeB. WTF are you smoking that has your vision so clouded that this point is not able to be understood? I see it as an insult to Erik and the dedicated persons who came to be called Elves. When they got canned their personal ties to YOUR warranty parts ended. If HD cannot or will not fix it.....then you find after market parts to fix it yourself, or sell it and move on.

Just in case you don't know how much their pride showed at every Homecoming and Buell event I went to, more than once I saw Erik himself, or a high ranking Elf, out in the parking lot putting parts on BUELL motorcycles so the owners could make it home, at NO CHARGE.

I would venture to guess if YOU had say 100,000 paid customers of the company YOU are employed by, and they came knocking on YOUR door, YOU would be so kind?
