All right, I'm an idiot ... I admit it. Didn't even occur to me until these last few posts that if my spring did fail at some point I would then have to wait to have one sent by dolphin all the way here ... for a silly little $8 spring. If someone orders a new shiny springy thingy any time soon, could you please send me a PM. I'll pay you to include a replacement spring (+ shipping) for me that you can send at your convenience. I'm assuming that will be less expensive than placing a completely new order for just 1 spring. It never even occurred to me that this might be a nice thing to stick in the toolbox just in case. I do appreciate that others are thinking ahead a little better than me though.

I just installed mine. Easy, as others have said. I thought about the slack in the upper part of the belt during engine braking. Users don't seem to report issues associated with engine braking. I am guessing the reason is the engine braking doesn't put anywhere near the load on the belt as engine acceleration. Thus, there is less load and the belt doesn't reach the 'slip threshold'.

Does anyone know the length tolerances to which the belt is made. Given that the Uly is non-adjustable for belt length, the belt would have to be made as precisely as the bike.

All Buell XBikes and 1125s employ non-adjustable axle positioning. I don't know the tolerance on the belt sizing.

Beautiful piece of equipment. Are the pivot bushings replaceable? Anyone have any experience as to how long they last before they start getting sloppy?

You should be able to purchase a die spring to the same spec or close to it, locally. Why you would have to order a spring from the UK seems nuts to me.

If you are ordering the tensioner, it makes sense to buy a spare with your order and be sure to have the same spring the device was designed for. He said cost is about $8. You won't get it any cheaper at your local Fastenal, but you certain
ly could source one locally if in need. I doubt he really wants to be in the business of selling springs at cost anyway.

this pully/spring must compress quite a bit and sometimes suddenly. This would leave considerable slack in the upper half of the belt cycle for a brief second or two.

The tensioner actually doesn't need to move very much at all (less than 1/2" at maximum), so doesn't leave as much belt slack as you might expect. It has just enough movement to 'deflect' shock loads and to stop the belt reaching the critical point where it snaps.

Since mine was down for yet another set of tires this weekend past, with wheels and belt off, I decided to take a detailed look at my springy thingy.
Yes, that is my stock 06 belt with tons o wheelies, stoppies and major decell braking, still in use as daily driver).



A quick removal, dissassembly, cleaning, inspection, assembly and installation revealed NO increase of play at the pivot shaft, pin or holes.

I did notice some rust from my pretirechangepressurewash on the spring where the powdercoat had chipped away.

I would very much like to replace this spring with a compatible stainless steel unit to eliminate this in the future.

Other than the rust on the spring my unit looks, feels and functions as new.

How many upgrades can one say that about after years of use and thousands of miles of service?

I run my belts "scary loose". The bump induced tension on the belt happens on the tension side, not the slack side. I think a sloppy loose belt still experiences this condition under an acceleration load. The spring loaded tensioner for the XB/1125 is on the tension side, so it is in a position to absorb the shock. Wish I could get one for my X1.

something just brought this topic back to mind ... no idea what. Reep helped me get mine on during the last tire change and I love it ... seems to work great and looks good too. My question, did anybody ever research a specific model & specs for a more local SS replacement spring? I wouldn't mind adding one to my "just in case" travel kit. I could pull mine off and take some measurements but if someone already has then why bother. Thanks
