Mine (2010 model) idles around 1500rpm for the first few minutes also, but I just use that time to put on the gear leisurely. About the time I'm ready to hop on, the idle drops down to a steady 1000 rpm (+/-). That's my debate with the muffler / ECM and other non-cosmetic mods: I am pretty happy with the bike as it rolled out (even with a little 'burble' in the 1800-2400 rpm range). I think they did a great job with the bike and tend to ride it more than I do my other bike (a certain Italian breed). Absolutely no complaints so far.

"The idle is computer controlled, you can easily adjust it to your taste, but I recommend leaving it as is." I know its a bit anal Froggy but I like my bikes set up "just so" for me. Can I use ECM-SPY for this.

I guess the main reason for this is the bike itself. The bike is a "Wolf in Sheeps" thing IE GS type but a "real life road/sports" bike and needs setting up for that. A 100rpm or so, off idle, would aid pickup through the gears for me. That may sound anal but I ride a Uly like a R1 or Gixxer 1000 and I know what I like.

Comparing the 06 vs the 10 -- the elevated idle on the 10 is not to my liking. There is nothing remotely cool about an idle at 1800 rpm. It may have a valid engineering basis but the 06 idle at 1050 rpm is a lot cooler IMO. It would seem to me the elevated idle would be related to engine temperature and a warm engine would not call for the higher rpm. I don't even know why this feature was added to the 2010 year as I never saw a single comment requesting a higher idle speed at start-up. I scratch my head over this.

The mpg on the 2010 at 4,000 miles on the odometer is still about 8ish mpg lower by my last check. It gets better at highway speeds but still. I don't know if the second exhaust sensor is the culprit or not. I hope the mpg climbs as the miles go up. Backup plan is the Erik Buell Racing racing ECM which can hopefully be tweeked for better mileage.

Now it may be that the much improved fan operation is keeping the engine so cool that the break-in period is extending. The 10 engine seems to run the oil cooler but I don't have data to publish on that.

Had history been different there may have been a SW refresh for the ecm some time about now that helped these out.

Love the 2010 bike (fan particularly) but the 06 mpg and idle operation best it imo.

You missed the part where the EPA wanted it to warm up faster. : )

Froggy- Is that honestly the reasoning behind the fast start-up idle?

Ive been putting a few miles on the bike here and there, I have noticed though that the bike smells really hot. I keep checking things over but everything looks good once the bike is shut down though the headers are making a lot of noise. The bike has 4000 miles on it, should I be concerned?

Make yourself an oil temp dipstick so that you can verify how hot your oil is getting. If the oil temp gets no hotter than around 210 then your engine is just fine. Here's how to make an oil temp dipstick.

Are those Motolights on your Uly? Are they mounted using their strap mounting system?

Thanks

Dyna- I have no clue the brand of lights, they look to be decent quality (right up there with my PIAA's) and they are mounted on a strap around the forks
