Took a S&*t.I was riding home from fishing & my engine light came on.It ran fine.As I turned in the back yard it died.I checked the voltage & it was 11.8v at rest & it went to 8v as I tryed to start it.Well I have a spare battery & installed it.13.4 -13.75 while running. So it seems sometimes it is the simple things that fix our problems.H*%l I got 5 years out of that battery so I feel it don't owe me anything.

Fish,
This is something I tried that Ratbuell suggested. Take that weak battery and hit each side of it on the floor a few times including top and bottom. Then put on a charger and see if it doesn't rejuvenate it. I've got the original battery that I tried that on and it now holds 12.8 after a day off the charger. I just keep it around just in case the new battery goes south.

Throw that sucker away, Dfishman. Five years is a great life.

Whoa, careful on banging the battery around. If the plates are in any way deteriorated you could shift enough of the debris in the bottom of the case around to cause an internal short. If there's enough hydrogen inside this little spark could cause a little kaboom.

I am picking up a new one today.I'm tickled to get 5 years out of the old one.On my charter boat I replace batteries as soon as they start acting up,which by the way is about every 5 years.I use AGMs & it seems 5 years is normal life.My old 8D lead acid batteries would only last 2-3 years on the boat.

My 97 Electraglide's battery is close to 10 years old and still starts the bike easily. I have no idea why it has lasted so long. I have 5 bikes in our garage and in the winter I move a marine type trickle charger from one bike to the other every few days. No battery tender or anything like that.

Been working parts counter for 3 years now and we sell a lot of batteries.
I always ask how old the batteries are and how treated.

12AHr(our Buells) last 4-6 years with good treatment - ridden often, on a tender when parked.

19AHr(new XLs, Dyna, Softail) last 6-9 years

28AHr(Baggers) are lasting 9-11 years.

Zack
