OK the manual says more play in the chain when cold.
Less when warm.
Is this a typo?
Do the expanding sprockets exceed the expansion of the chain?

yes to the last, not a typo.
Primary chain tightens with heat.
As far back as I remember.

The entire crankcase expands when it heats up. This causes the centers of the crankshaft and input shaft to move further apart. Therefore you need more primary chain slack on a cold engine than on a hot one.

Never know when something is a typo.

So a cold adjustment should yield a more consistent baseline. i.e. same temp @ check.

I usually adjust mine when room temp at the loose side of spec.
A little floppy is better than too tight.
