Given the bad batch of cranks on 07 XB's, I'd avoid them if you plan on keeping it a while or racking up miles. The 08's are nicer anyway : )

I agree. That's a fair price and sounds like a nice bike, but with a little looking you can find an 08 or 09 for not much more and avoid the future possibility of a crank problem.

There has got to be a specific time period that these suspect "bad" cranks were installed and I doubt it was a whole year's worth. Why make it sound like all 07' bikes are going to grenade just because of 1 or maybe 2. I mean just because one guy had a bearing failure on a 2010 wheel should everyone shy away from getting one? One guy a couple of years ago on this BadWeb beyatched night and day about his engine knocking. Most of us never had the problem but you'd of thought that everyone did by reading his constant moaning about it.
Anyway, why rain on Nillaices parade? He's got a pretty good lead on a nice ride so I say you guys shouldn't condemn an entire year of production because of one bike.

Hugh,
Any bike can fail for any given reason but the other 99% probably won't.

I agree, but at this time it is unknown how many bikes are affected.

Hugh was the 4th one I've read that had a crank failure on an 07. Given that Badweb has only a small percentage of Buell owners, it is safe to say there have been failures we don't know about.

That was a case of user error, not mechanical failure due to improperly manufactured components.

It is usually pretty clear when one person is having an issue vs a lot of people.

Just trying to help him avoid an potentially expensive mistake. If I was in his position, I would be shopping around for something other than an 07 XB. In fact, I'd probably try to snag an 08 given the significant improvements to the bike including the crank.

I guess in the future when someone asks if there is anything they should look out for, I'll tell them they have nothing to fear about because Buell's are the only perfect machines on earth and will never fail them.

I'd jump all over that. There are always concerns about future problems, some of which may or may not materialize. There are pros and cons to 06/07 bikes vs 08/09 models. I say go for it.

There's a good deal over on adv riders on a newer xt. Very nice looking bike, I posted the pics on there he emailed me. No affiliation otherwise.

I might steer away from an 07, but not because of any potential engine problems. I have had many issues with my 07, but the engine remains one of the few reliable parts and I'm closing in on 100k miles. BTW, been using SuperTech 20w50 dino oil in both holes since about 25k miles. Crankcase oil gets changed out at 5k intervals, transmission at 10k.

For anyone wondering, bike has a build date of September 06 (same as Hughlysses, I believe).

Damn Dirt, just read your profile. Hard to believe you stuck with the bike! My bike was rock solid the first 22K. Then snapped the belt. A week after getting back on the road, primary lip went. Hoping that will be all for quiet awhile! Don't think I could hang in like you have. Sure hope I don't have to find out!

Oh crap! I had missed this thread for a few days! Is it a continuation of the June 21st thread? I feel like the sky is falling.....again. Damn the crank shaft.....another spare part to store.

Froggy has me so depressed about XB engines that there is no way I could even think about buying another HD Buell. Well perhaps a water closet model would due. I'm feeling the need to take my Uly out in the yard, kick it over on it's side and post pictures of it!

Doom and gloom my ass. Run dino oils per the ambient temps in the book, and run the shit out of it! If it grenades just be prepared to hear "I told you so". If it doesn't blow up just ride and grin!

My son's ULY has a May 07' build date. Hopefully it is out of the bad crank period.

Mine was September 06 build, but like Dirt said above, so was his and he's got 100k miles without crank problems.

Who knows? Maybe they had two sub-contractors producing cranks at the same time and one had QC problems and the other didn't. We don't have nearly enough info to make even an educated guess towards identifying a pattern in the failures.

Here's what mine sounded like after the damage had been done:

~100 miles prior to that, it sounded normal to me. Of course the noise may gradually gotten louder over several hundred or more miles (which I might not have noticed) until some critical point when it got much worse.

My guess is that even if this failure is specific to 07's, it's probably a limited problem and odds are your bike won't have it.

Mine was at ~29,400 miles. I think the others were at similar mileages.

Mine = Sept 06'

With much love and respect Hugh, I hope yours was a fluke.

Is it the "squeek" I hear intermittently that indicates the crank issue? (in the video)

No, it's the fairly high-pitched "clack" noise.

I don't think I've ever seen them for less than $90-100 new. Unless someone has one for sale in the classifieds...
