I am curious about a Uly in a Dakar race. How would the Uly do, could it make it and be competitive? Any experts that have really taken the X to it's max? | ||

The street tire sizes wouldn't do it any favors, but the biggest problem I can see would be the 4.5 gallon fuel tank without an easy way to increase it. | ||

final drive train, tires options, suspension travel, steering angle, fuel capacity/range, gearing, foot peg position, rear swing arm/shock connection durability REAL offroad. Just a few Dakar issues off the top of my head. | ||

Love Ulys but they are not desert racers too heavy too short on range. Not a bike to fly over sand.Growing up in fl we have nearly the sand of a desert some of ours is just under water | ||

Dakar organizers REALLY pissed off KTM [in 2010?] & Austrians' dominant 690cc winners by suddenly slashing maximum engine size to 450cc so no Uly, or Blast for that matter mebbe the stillborn Buell dirtbike....? watch results for American M/C Jonah Street | ||

The worst thing about the Uly would be that 17" front tire in SAND. It'd be like riding hundreds of miles on pavement with a flat front tire. | ||

I thought of an idea for more fuel. Someone just needs to build it. Instead of a big bulbulous plastic air filter cover(two of them to be exact), replace the air filter housing with a kit like Al sells, then manufacture a metal holding tank(curves and all, I know not easy)that would match the external plastic cover,if not bigger, and bolt it right over the airfilter using some of the same mounting points the current plastic cover uses, then use the current tank vent, modify it to accept gas to flow through........how's that for a run-on sentence? I know, it's far fetched. But depending on how large you made it, I figure you could get a couple more gallons on this thing and still make it look good. thoughts? Don't worry, you won't insult me! | ||

in the past, an official Buell factory off-road effort might've counted on Ford Motor Co to supply support vehicles [thru the H-D Lightning connection, Chris Carr, etc.] what comes next....who really knows? now - when's Daytona AM Pro? (Message edited by firstbuell on January 10, 2011) | ||

Hugh, Couldn't be much worse than riding my ULY to 2008 Homecoming with a severely cupped D616 front tire. Felt like my teeth were rattling 500 out and 500 miles back, plus mileage in between. | ||

EG- Ouch! I've gotten caught in sand twice with my Uly and it was not a pleasant experience either time. Once I was ~10 miles down a dirt road, ~1 mile from pavement, and hit ~6" deep river bed sand. It felt like the front wheel was hydroplaning the whole time. The bike just kind of wandered all over the road and I had to try to coax it to stay between the ditches. I got so wobbly at one point I stopped, and then realized I was 1/2 through, so I had to ride it out either way. When I made it to pavement again I had to pry my arse off the seat. The other time I was on a dirt road that had been hard-packed the time I'd gone through before. The sand was in a sweeping curve so I kept moderate power on- the front wheel started wobbling like a tank-slapper! Scared the crap out of me- luckily, this patch was much shorter. After those two instances, I just stay away from sand whenever possible. I shudder to think of trying to ride hundreds of miles through the desert on the thing. | ||

I ran the Cityx over 62 miles of rough goat track at a good clip, two creek crossings, and a change of elevation of 4 K.....the next day the damage was extensive it is not the right hammer for that job. | ||

Whats going on with you lot. The Uly is the best tall bike on the road but it is not, no matter what HD said, a Dakar bike. Come to that no production bike, even a GS, in standard form can survive the Dakar run. Get a grip for Gods sake. | ||

Oh and just as a case in point. I have been over part of the Dakar run in a Land Rover and the pain was just something you dont want to know. Also it makes everything fall to bits. | ||

Instead of all that work making an auxiliary fuel tank you could just buy one of those tour-tanks. The Uly is a great bike but it shouldn't even be mentioned in the same conversation as the Dakar. | ||
