Pete,
Didn't I read where you had your belt replaced under warranty? If so, what did you do, bring in the broken one and explain the change-out to the dealer? If so, you've got a good dealer.
Did you replace the original belt with a new one or had you swapped them out before? I notice you used the bike-on-it's-side method. Any gas leakage or other issues with that? Any tips?

certainly no need to lay the bike on it's side!!! ...or even jack it up for that matter.
I think the last belt I replaced took all of 15 minutes. No jack, no wheel removal, etc. I think some people make it tougher than it needs to be.
LOOSEN axle (do not remove)
Remove swingarm brace
LOOSEN pulley bolts (do not remove)
remove front pulley cover
remove belt
reverse
done |

My belt warranty issue is a bit of a story so bear with me.
I broke the belt on a trip north in August and just had it replaced under warranty on Friday.
So back in August, I wasn't able to change it at the side of the road because of ignorance (mine) and the lack of proper tools.
After the rescue I had the dealer replace it with my spare and then put in a warranty claim.
There was a crack in the belt between virtualy each cog.
Deely Canada (HD's agent) denied my claim because it was replaced with my belt not one that they supplied.
We argued back and forth for a while until they finally agreed to replace the belt and install it, so I could retain my belt as a spare.
I had that done last weekend along with a bunch of other stuff tires, and a new Erik Buell Racing front brake rotor.

Thank you. I'll go over that with my tech/friend when he installs my 2010 wheel. I appreciate the KISS method and your confidence in this straight forward approach.

Just so everyone understands (putting on my ex-employee-hat for a post here):
1. If the bike is still under warranty, AND
2. all belt guards are still in place and nothing is modified...
the belt is covered under warranty.
Period.
Factory warranty? Free.
Extended warranty? $50 deductible (per visit; get a couple other things fixed while it's in there, for the same $50).
Plain and simple.
There is NO scheduled maintenance interval.
There is NO adjustment interval or spec (remember that tensioner pulley?).
Belt guards? Within warranty term? Broke belt? It's warranty, go get your belt. If they argue, go get another dealer.
(do NOT get it towed by the dealer from the local track day or the MotoX track...that whole "off road use" clause...but other than that you should be fine!)
1 year 11.75 months (yes, one WEEK before my warranty expired), 13k miles, and my OEM 06 belt broke. They laughed at me because I was on my way to Daytona (took the S2 instead, no biggie)...but they put a new belt on for me without hesitation.
For free.

I bought my bike used. They changed out the rear bearings at 5k and the belt at 7k, out of warranty, FOC but I had a good dealer to support my case with the problems.
Even though I had read that the belt was "for life" I never went with it. You would be nuts to think so. |
