while we are on this subject, how do you dismantle the shock to replace this spacer? do you have to take the shock completely off? is a spring compressor required? and what the heck is that screw on the side of the bottom mount for? its got reverse threads and doesnt seem to have much effect for something so special looking.

Hi Gringo.
Screw on bottom of shock is rebound damping adjustment.
I made up a spring compressor so I would not have to remove the shock. I'm not sure if you can buy one that will fit between the frame and the side of the shock. When you have the spring compressed you need to take out the bottom bolt to remove the original retaining ring. Then drop in the lowering ring and slacken the spring compressor. I think the slot in the lowering ring is to allow access to the rebound screw.
Takes about one hour when you have the right spring compressor.

Hey Mculy,
how about posting a picture of your spring compressor. That way we can all tool up for when Jasonb does the biz.

Hey Mculy,
Did you lower your forks at all? With the lower height, did you have to change your sidestand? I went to Ireland in `97, and absolutely loved it. The Guinness is awesome, and the people are so friendly, its hard to believe. I always said I would go back in a heartbeat, although I know it has changed some.

Hi guys, spring compressor is rough and ready.
Threaded bar is 12mm with 1/2" tubing run over it. They are different lengths because of the coils in the spring. I hope you can see the lengths on the photo, one is 6" inside hooks and the other is 5".

Hi Motorfish, glad you liked Ireland, like every country we have got our fair share of Assholes as well, I have to say when I was in the States I found people very friendly.
I didn't lower the forks and the sidestand works fine, I would leave it in gear though when it is parked. I have a photo of it lowered, it doesn't look unusual or extra low at the back, bear in mind that I only weigh about 160lbs so I don't compress the spring a whole lot.

Mculy, it`s too bad, A-holes are everywhere. The Uly is a great bike for your country, lots of rough/ dirt roads, from what I remember. Your bike looks great, can`t really tell it`s lower. I`ll see if JasonB makes up some rings and how much they are. I`m sure the price will be fair, but I`m low-on-the-dough right now. Been out out of work, way too long.
I`m 5'11", 200lbs. and sit with the balls of my feet touching, but would like to sit flatfooted. I would love the `08 trees too, but as I said, things aren`t $$ good.
Nice job on the spring compressor tool, also.

Hi...new to the forum. I'm a longtime HD rider, just buying an '08 Ulysses xb12xt, a little tall for me by 1 - 1.5". Will swapping out the rear shock for an xb12S shock do the trick? There's an '04 xb12S rear shock on ebaymotors I'm thinking of buying/bidding.

Is this a better idea than a Mizu lowering bracket, which will only lower the bike about .8"? Any input it appreciated.

Dude,

When I first installed the spacer, I lowered the tubes in the triple trees, I had to remove the circlip around the fork tubes but it clamped up real tight. I lowered the tubes exactly 1 inch to keep it the same as before. I rode around for about 10 miles at city and highway speeds. The bike felt like it was canted forward, so I returned the tubes to stock setting and tested again. It felt completely normal with no adverse angles on the sidestand. I have been completely satisfied with the result of the spacer.

Good luck everybody.

Vecchio lupo...

How much did the Mizu bracket/spacer lower the bike? Did you buy it from a US supplier, or from somewehere overseas?

Thanks,

As a new Uly owner (06xb12x) I will ask a few dumb questions,
Will the xt shock lower a xb12x, and by
how much?
What is the cost?
Will the spacer talked about above
still allow access to the
adjustment screw in the shock?

maybe not the right thread, but kind of on point-

has anyone chopped their subframe to effectively change the seat angle, resulting in a lower, straighter seat? it seems do-able, but i can't recall ever seeing anyone do anything like it. i figure that if the subframe were cut beneath the brake reservoir, and new holes were drilled that it would change the angle of the seat. here is a very rough mock up:

aside from modding the seat a little bit, what kind of problems could i anticipate?
what do you think dudes? fun project, or just buy the mizu?

with my riding boots, i can flatfoot both feet, so height isn't really the issue. i kind of want to shape my bike into some sort of mutant cafe racer. perhaps some clip ons are in my future too? i can't really ride that much right now, so i may as well have fun messing with it...

Sorry for the long delay in updating everyone on my lowering kit progress. Work has been hectic, and in fact I'm in China as I type this. I am still planning on designing a similar lowering collar as the Mizu one.

As soon as I can get back on it, I'll start posting pics in a new thread. Sorry for the delays. Hang in there. Still have some time until riding season is in full swing for us suffering through winter!

Xcephasx,

I don't think I would recommend this. The tail is a cast aluminum part that has screw bosses and ribbing molded into it. I think if you move the mounting positions, you would loose too much strength to be safe.

Just my opinion

I was talking to a buddy about it. He suggested that if I wanted to go that route, the way to do it would be to section the frame and re-weld it. Apparently people have been doing it with dirt bikes for decades. Regardless, I think I'd rather throw a TT shock in there and possibly the mizu, or Jason's spacer.

Hi there Vecchio

I've just bought a MIZU lowering kit (ring!) and not 100% confident about how to fit it

Any chance of a step-by-step description of the process or even some pics?

I'm over in London so can't buy you a beer for your troubles, but can send some good vibes your way ; )

Did you need to use a paddock stand and/or jack?

I've bought some coil spring compressors, but that's about as far as I've got. The instructions were in german and even when (badly) translated didn't answer all my questions.

Any help massively appreciated!

I used 2 ratchet straps to compress my spring when I installed my lowering collar. I was going to buy one of those, but they were sold out at the time.
