How easy or hard would a retrofit be for this kit to a non-P model???

I think I will attempt to purchase and retrofit this to my standard XB12X. UNless I hear from one of you that it is a nightmare.

Quote- I'm frankly surprised the bike didn't garner more favor as it would be an excellent law enforcement platform.

Answer from a retired cop... When cops began to figure out HD and Kawi bikes just weren't holding up to the performance requirements for a modern police bike, police agencies started looking at the Euro-agencies, who of course were almost exclusively riding BMWs. BMW makes a police specific bike based on their street bikes and police depts here liked that, PLUS the B-mer spent very little time in the shop compaired to the Kawi and especially the HD.

I can tell you after going from a Kawi to a B-mer the B-mer was a superbike in comparison and outperformed the other 2 in every respect. Being a Uly guy now, you are right, the Uly will do everything the B-mer will do and in my most humble opinion, handles better except in the slow-go area and turning radius.

So basically, BMW flooded the police market in 2001, then again in 2004 and 2006. All those guys who had been 'stuck' riding HDs and Kawi's forever welcomed the increased power, performance, manoverability and safety features and had no desire to make a change. PLUS, BMW gave all the police agencies incredible deals on the bikes so they were getting more bang for the buck.

Basically, between overall operating cost of the B-mer and especially the late timing of the XP release, the Uly had little chance to compete in the police market.

To me the biggest issue with the Uly as a cop bike is it's low down tractability. I love my Uly, but I hate it's low down, around town jerking behavior. It's better with the Erik Buell Racing race ecm, but it still wouldn't be an acceptable all day long slow around town type bike. It'd make me crazy.

The XB9 gearing solves the lugging issue. You can actually run at 2k rpms without doing the herky-jerky. I don't ever see me changing back to stock gearing.

Itileman, that's actually a thought I've had. Maybe, if the bike came standard with the XB9 gearing, it would've been a contender. Still, I doubt it. Buell is considered too weird compared to the likes of BMW, HD.

Breather reroute and a fuel map, I can ride right down to my 750rpm idle. No need to waste your time and money with the primary and the con of lower fuel economy due to the higher RPM.

Froggy i agree. When I was out today I was wishing for a lower first but a 6th gear too. Maybe that would have been the 2012 version.

I do love my Uly though!

I've heard about this mythical desire for a 6th gear on a Uly. Jeez, the Erik Buell Racing race ecm smoothed things out so much I find myself not even shifting into 5th unless I'm cruising at 80mph for awhile. I can't imagine needing a 6th gear!

I luv the Uly because it is so rough and shakey at low rpms, then when you crank it up the power really comes on. Sort of like the old 2 stroke days of when you got it on the pipe, or the sweet spot in the rpm range. This is what gives the bike character and puts a smile on my face anyways. I've ridden the other overhead cam, shorter stroked, motors - boring. Being a pushrod motor allows the cylinder walls to be that much longer. Stand this motor up next to a KTM LC8 and you can see the difference. And 2000 rpm is going to feel like 2000 rpm no matter what gear or gearing you have it in. These things have long legs. It'll never be a putsy little bike. Get a Vespa if you want an around-town bike I say!

Thanks Aesthetics,

Thats the answer I was looking for. Can you post or pm me the H-D/Buell part number for the Harness piece? Can you expand on the procedure needed.

I will now start my search for a kit.

i just had the parts desk pull up the xp part catalog.
goes from controller mounted below seat to back (drilled through undertail).
to go forward you have to remove airbox, ls scoop and flyscreen. simply run wires and clip together.
and then you have to mount the switch too.
didn't install siren.
will get some pics.

Thank You Sir,

I'm Law Enforcement and ride with the Blue Knights, an Int'l Police fraternal riding club. I'd like to do my Uly in close to my Dept livery as a "What could have been" exercise.

Now I can pursue the parts.

Court - any idea how those two harnesses hook into the bike? Is it just "plug into the aux outlet circuit under the seat and run the wires" and they include all the connectors?

Hmm....

I'm thinking an orange '06 with all amber alert lights would be pretty cool.... : )

The main harness has a Sub-Harness EVA plug (4 pin connector).

It **may** just plug in here . . .

There are also 3 complete lighting conversion kits. One each for:

Red-Red
Blue-Blue
Red-Blue

The entire Law Enforcement LIGHTNING (not radios and siren are detailed in the parts books.

Yeah, I personally upfitted one...but don't remember what all was in place on the bike or how it attached to the systems : (

I do have all the service manuals...but I still need to get parts books.

*IF* I jump on a kit (money is tight right now)...I'll probably go red/red because it's less likely to cause problems.

"I swear Officer...they're just hazard lights!" : )

I've posted the bike for sale on ebay and on Dallas Craigslist. The unique features on this bike are; The panniers and top box and the front beak have been two toned, half white/black. The police light controller box was under the rear seat. The LED strobe lights were left installed on the hand guards. I also installed the comfort kit, but not the reflash, as I'll never challenge the top speed limiter. I put a new battery in it, and it started on the first crank. I've since ridden it on a few errands, so the miles are up to around 30 now. Love Uly's, but I can't keep all these bikes....

Well, all the parts, including the two sub harnesses are on the way to me, and I'll be lighting my 08 Uly in the next couple of weeks. I'll then be riding it to the European Blue Knights convention on the French Riviera. I'm probably going to install a master cut off so I can prove to any over anxious polizei that they are mock up, display only.

I hope the installation is straight forward, I'm not useless with tools, but I don't make my living with them either.
