Went on a two day trip, My 06 Uly ran fine the fine the first 4 hours into the trip, then started once in a very long while to have almost like an hickup at around 3000rpm. This would happen intermittent for the rest of day one, but started to get more frequent and turn more into the engine cutting out for a split second. On the second day it got more frequent and the cutouts more prolonged with the check engine light coming on, but not staying on. So no code to retrieve, right? Its really like somebody hitting the engine stop switch, so I'm guessing its electrical?? Need help please, I took a whole week off from work to just go riding and now that

Happened to me on my way in to work this morning, don't know what it is either but maybe someone else will chime in.

After checking old threads and since the gauges stay on when the engine cuts out on my 06 Uly I think its not the wiring harness and I can assume a faulty ECM or ECM connections?? Am I assuming right? How do I check for that?
Thanks Blasterd and Balloyd66 for your help!

Unplug your ECM connectors, give them one revolution and plug them back in. Mine had a couple of spots where the wires near the plugs got too friendly, rotating them released pressure that was holding them together. I found that one had rubbed thorough enough that I taped it.

Found the culprit: RH side jack on the ECM is cracked halfway around, used epoxy and zip-tie to pull it together, took the bike for a 20 mile test ride and no cutouts. So far so good.
Seat pan must have pushed down on the ECM during my last very bouncy ride (Matole Road at the Lost Coast, CA), broke the RH ECM mounting tab and cracked the RH jack. Little surprised by that, I'm for sure no hefty guy with 180lbs. Any remedies ? Relocating the ECM ?
Anybody got a ECM lying around that he/she doesn't use after getting a Race ECM? Don't now how long my fix will last. Thanks guys!

Rwven suggests stuffing it in the void in front of the battery. There are a few posts concerning the placement here somewhere.

And another user suggested also wrapping a bit of foam rubber around it for vibration dampening before stuffing it.

I've seen a few posts where people changed the ECM bolts to longer ones and added wood or plastic blocks to help protect it from the seat. One other picture showed someone had bent a sheet of metal to attach at the rear bolt, fold over the ECM and rest on the front block. That looked like a super cool idea! I've been working on a similar ECM protector and feel that it's an important mod to protect our ECMs. I think many posts for bizarre engine cutting out could be traced back to squished ECMs or connectors.

I checked everything this weekend, all connectors and grounds looked good. I'll add some star washers this week.
Mine did it again this morning, just a miss nothing actually shuts down. Strange thing is it only does it before the engine gets to full operating temp. I let it warm up and then take off, about a mile down the road it skips and doesn't anymore...

I used a heat gun and made a depression on the seat base to clear the ecm with room to spare.

I am not in a position to take pics right now but there is a factory hole under the seat right where the bump needs to be made. I used Playdoh to check the clearance and it not much when you sit on the seat and move around. I think the seat moves even more when its good and hot.

Blasterd,

My 'o6 will cough one time about a mile out on a cold start if I do not let it warm up a few minutes before launching.

If it warms up for a couple of minutes before I mount up, it never does it at all.

I usually let it warm up while I am putting on all my gear, did that with all my Buell's and Harley's. This just started Friday, it's not the usual cough or sputter that 45's are famous for, it's more of an all out skip.
At first I figured it had some water in the fuel or something but when it did it at the same spot as Friday I knew this is something different...

GGRRRRR! Felt like I almost wasn't going make it home tonight, It skipped all the way home on me.
Grounds are fine, I am about to pull the scoop off and check the plug wires. Any other suggestions? This bugs me because this is my only way to work tomorrow..

I still think my fix (ECM condom) would sell, but I never went into production because I think the rules say I can't sell it here.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/517589.html

The 2nd one I made was made of thinner steel. I ran it from Dec - Aug and it went with my bike. There were marks on the seat where the seat was definitely hitting on the protector, but NOT on the ECM body or connectors. I guess the protector spreads the load over the whole ECM body.
It was easy to make. I just drew it on scrap paper and the Amish machine shop cut and bent it for me for less then 10.00. Then I drilled the hole. You see I had to use an Allen head bolt because the clearance between the protector and bolt head is limited.

Well, after checking all grounds I think I got it figured out, had a plug wire slip off the front cylinder. It had so much dialectric grease it would just slide right off. I had to bend the connector for it to fit tight and thought I had it licked until................................
I saw my ECM was cracked! I am not sure what was causing the trouble the plug wire or the ECM. I'll know more in the morning on the way to work, and then I'll call the dealer to see if they have one in stock. Wish I could get one of those new Erik Buell Racing ones!
I checked my seat out and sure enough it was rubbing (thought they had this squared away with the '09's) so I trimmed the underseat where it was making contact, hopefully it wont touch anymore.
My PCV valve was out of the rear cylinder also.

The ECM is under warranty (2009 XB12XP) so I really don't know how much it is, when they put it on Thursday morning they are going to make sure it has the latest flash and The ECM is for a 2008-2010 Uly.

Hunn, mine was cracked around the connector and down the middle of the module. I filed and cut the seat where it made contact so hopefully it wont happen again. My Uly is my only transportation so I was glad they had one in stock.
Hope you get yours sorted out asap, didn't mean to hijack your thread either.

Blasterd : The band-aid fix with epoxy and zip tie in combination with a carriage bolt on the RH ECM tab to keep the seat from rubbing seems to be working. Just did a 600 mile trip to Bend, OR and back over the weekend without any cutting out.
This gives me some time to save some money up for a Erik Buell Racing Race-ECM, since I also need a new rear tire first.
