I just got my 09 Uly back from a service on changing the primary fluid, primary chain adjustment and a clutch adjustment. The bike is idling at about 1000 rpm but the vibration thru the bars at idle can shake you teeth out. I thought I had read here that if the chain is to loose or to tight it could vibrate like this? What do you think.

I've been fighting vibrations for a long time. The big culprit is the primary chain. SOme old school mechanics keep them too loose. Check your adjustment. 3/8" cold - 1/4" hot total flex [ up to down / top to bottom] . Just for the hell of it, check your front motor mount too.

Another trick or two. I use wax while u dry, spray the heim joints well. Use HVMP handlebar weights and fill the handlebars with silicon caulk.

My bike has always had the bad old lawnmower effect between 2500 and 3000 rpm. Shakes like a dog shittin razor blades. Let her cool down and she's smooth for a little bit. This is a heat and lean situation which manifests itself through a secondary harmonic vibration working its way through the primary chain. I hope get a race computer soon.

Strange. My 2008 loves to truck along at 2500-3000.
I get tingly vibes on the highway at 80 though.

It was not doing this before the service. I have the HVMP heavy weight bar ends on it.

Check the front isolator motor mount. There is a couple of threads in this section on that part and can cause what your talking about.

Thanks Frank.
Got back from a 500 mile ride yesterday and have not had time to look at it yet. I might get a chance on Monday.

Natexlh1000 - Strange too - mine goes gold wing smooth at 80 to 100. It is so at home at 90 - 95. Easy ticket or jail time. I wonder where the variation is. Most Uly owners claim their bikes are smooth. Mine has to be up on rpm's or she is a buzzy bitch.

I am wondering if there is a vent or pressure relief valve or something that gets sticky. I have also been suspicious of the local high octane pump piss. Chevron and Shell seem the best. BP and the local store blends are the worst. She was smoother over the winter, then suddenly the shakes started to get bad again.

The idea of this buzz on Rkc00 happening after a service leads me to the primary chain adjustment unless there was a fresh flash without a TPS. Who knows.....

I will be calling my dealer on Monday to find out what they did. Once I give it gas it all smooths out. Although I could feel a buzz at higher rpms also

My isolator motor mount came back broken after a dealer visit. Go figure. Fix one thing, break another.

FYI!!!!!!! While you guys are checking your isolators, take the bike off of the kickstand, and set it upright to check it. My isolator on my Firebolt just failed, but looked fine on the kickstand because it's attached to the motor, and pushed up with the weight of the bike leaning on it. When I had it standing with the front wheel clamped on my lift, no kickstand, the motor was sitting on the washer and bolt head. Just keep this in mind gals and fellas. You will get a possibly false diagnosis if the bike is on the kickstand.

The two areas circled below look a little questionable:

isolator

People have found similar tears on the tops of their isolators after removing them for inspection. Isolators seemed OK, but after replacement they noted marked decrease in vibrations.

It's only about a 10 minute job to remove it; I'd pull it off and look at the top.

My casting piece is almost sitting on the head of the bolt, and the rubber isolation piece is sticking out of the top of the casting. There are small tears around where the rubber contacts the isolator casting itself. No funny vibes at all, but its done. I will replace it ASAP.
I'm wondering if mine has been bad for a while, and I have not noticed. Odd, seeing as most of you get some serious vibes when these things go. I think mine is at it's limit, as I have a tiny sliver (.002 ?) of light between the bolt head, and the isolator. Maybe I cought it right at the end of it's life. Time for a new one.

Did you ever get to the bottom of the problem??? PS - you can try a TPS adjustment, too.

+1 on the TPS adjustment. Keeping this simple, it has to be something that the dealer did wrong which makes this either a primary chain too tight / too loose issue or an incorrectly performed "cold" TPS reset. There's a chance that they did something really stupid which wrecked your motor mount. But I can't think of what that would be.

I've always thought my Uly vibrated excessively. 25 to 3 K is an old lawnmower routine. She's out of warranty now and I've lived with a lot of this BS for a while. This past week, I thought I'd dig in deeper. I've always tuned for accumulated benefits. A little improvement here and a little there can add up.

The primary chain has always been a question so I keep it "by the book".

I just removed the pan under the tank and filter and sure enough, The upper heim joint and the ground strap were rubbing on the pan. I pounded down the strap connector and filed down the bolt.

The rear rocker box also rubs against the front of the seat. You can see were it rubbed through the heat blanket and against the seat. Cut the plastic and filed the rocker box.

I still had what I consider a bit more vibration than what I should. I jacked up the bike and this put the front motor mount to the frame. SHe really shook when I ran the RPM's up and down. The motor seemed a bit rough when I did an RPM search - 1500 - 2000 - 2500 - 3000 etc. You couldn't feel this when you were riding except the bike did not want to "putt" around. She always wanted to rip roar. I did a simple check on the spark plug torque. Sure enough, the front plug took another quarter turn and the wire boots on both were not all the way down.

Another little trick. I put a thin washer between the front mount and the frame to give it just a little more wiggle room. The front elastomer should not hit the frame at all now. 1/8 to 3/16 drop.

The motor is smoother, the bike is smoother. My next step is the Erik Buell Racing computer. For now, all is much better.

What is this vibration like? I got a weird slight vibration while at speed on highway only a couple different times. Best way I can describe it is it was like a buzz. I felt it in my pegs and grips (don't remember exactly if I also felt it in my seat but probably) It happened only a few times and only at speed... 65-75mph. Each time, it buzzed for 1st 20 miles, then nothing after that. It could be the road I was on. I believe it was about 3500-4100 rpm.
I figured it was something in the road and dismissed it because it only happened a few times.

My 2008 feels more tingly on the highway than my X1. Perhaps I will poke around under the airbox and find truth!

Check your primary chain.

Pull it apart and look for scuff marks.

Make sure the motor is running smooth without skipping.

Lube the heim joints with tire shine.

Well the dealer finally got the bike apart and replaced the front isolator. He said the existing one was shot. He said looking at it from the top it was falling apart. Only had 5000 miles on it. Will be picking it up in the morning. Have to drop of my 1125CR again. Having problems with it stalling after having the charcoal canister and harness installed. It never ends. I have had both bikes in and out of the shop for a good part of 3 1/2 months. I ride one in and pick up the other. Lucky I have 3 bikes or I would be in trouble. I am soon picking up a 09 1125R. Hope I do not have to put that one in the rotation to the dealer.

So far the Vrod has not been in the dealer for any problems lately.

I didn't think that changing the isolator would help. Yours showed stress, but it had not failed. The mechanic needs to re-trace his work. There was something that was done that caused your problem to begin. Did he adjust the primary? Did he re-flash the computer? Did he change the plugs? Did he re-set the TPS?

Keep us posted. Mine is a lot better but I think it could better.

All he was to do was change the primary fluid adjust the primary and clutch. He keeps telling me that the primary should have no effect on the vibrations.
