Al,

I'm not sure what cracked it. I suspect it may have been a combination of the heat blanket I used to have under the seat with the battery charging pigtail being left in the wrong place on top of it. But that's just a guess.

Pauley,

I guess I'll just have to keep the revs up and slip the clutch more. The no flat spots sounds promising though. Thanks.

EBR responded and an engineer will be calling me.
They offered replace/refund also.

Hope I get a good one this time.

Mine's in and installed. When the rain stops I'll do a TPS reset and take it for a ride, Wednesday morning perhaps.

A note on the unanchored ECM hold down nut. I threaded a short piece of 1/4-20 all-thread through the nut, dropped a wire down through the hole, tied the wire to the end of the all-thread, put a liberal amount of silicone sealant on the nut and pulled the nut into it's recess with the wire. I then secured the all-thread with a pair of vicegrips until the silicone set.

When I installed the ECM the bolt for the front mount went in well until it hit the nylock on the nut. The nut then tore itself loose from the silicone and proceeded to spin instead of lightening. I put an Allen socket on a 3/8" drive air impact driver and gave it a couple bursts. The impact wrench drove the threads through the nylock and it tightened up.

YMMV....

Can someone tell me more about your "surging between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm" please? I am having some issues in that range I'm trying to troubleshoot.

Thanks

Oh yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about! With the new ECM it runs clean everywhere in the RPM range. Chugs up from 2k in fifth without a glitch. No discernible surge anywhere even cruising in the 3-4K range. Good clean idle at every stop. That weird hole between 4-5K is gone too. Well worth the $250.

On a `06,can the ECM be reprogrammed with ECMspy to be like a race ECM? With the correct maps and someone who knows how? (not me yet).

Hi all, id like to add another comment on the race ecm. I received mine last week and ran into problems soon after. At 3K rpm it feels like it is switching between open and closed loop every minute or so giving that hiccup or miss or pause or whatever happens. Cold idle is very eratic and decel popping is extreme, sounds like im towing a popcorn machine around. Needless to say this is similar to yours Pauley, but im still waiting for a response from ebr since 25th. After 180 miles and 3 days i took it out.
Does anyone know if this problem could be due to tps? Ive done 2 resets while it was fitted but no cookie.

My 2008 EBR ECM (with race pipe and air filter) worked perfect for apx 20hrs. Then, decel popping started and it has grown to minor backfiring. Cold idle has gone from excellent to one cylinder trying to quit until warm (and getting worse). Still runs great under partial and full throttle. Re-installed stock ECM and no problems....

Redbuell,Bikelit

My 08 had the same problems as yours with EBR race ECM installed. E mail EBR mailto:tech@ebracing.com. Mine was sent back and I am waiting for a resolution. They will refund your money no problem but I am hoping there is a issue with the ECM.

Guys, the sticker on the race ECM, does it read M31PA282? Maybe there is problem with the flash?

Get ahold of EBR.

Al

Also what seams to be causing the poor running at idle is the ECM is reading a rich condition in closed loop and adjusting the AFV down. With 40mi on my race ECM before I removed it my AFV was down to the low 70s. Needless to say my cold startup was really bad. Hunting idle, coughing, stalling and once warmed up a very rough idle. All sensor inputs though ecm spy looked normal. And numerous TPS resets was no help.

I had all of the problems you all are talking about. My 08 has a drummer with a Jardine insert, open air box and open crankcase breathers. Try a roll on from 3000 rpm to 6000 rpm in 4th gear,I did this 4 or 5 times, now it runs great top to bottom, after 600 miles

I'm having the same problem with my 09 with race ecm and stock muff. Hunting and spitting on startup (cold). It's fine once warmed up. I'll try your trick tomorrow Spectra.

09's don't work the same as '08s.

Yes Idle and miss @ 3K.
Money offered back, would rather have a replacement ECM that works right.

Tps reset done like twice to no avail.

Mine is doing the poor cold idle and the glitch when cruising right at 3000 rpm's thing now too. Disappointing because it ran so well the first few days. Runs great warmed up though. Overall it's still better than it has been so I'll put up with it. Hopefully EBR will find a fix, I'll shoot them an E-mail just to let them know where I'm at.

There have been well over 200 Race ECM's sold by EBR, I've seen only about half a dozen posts from people that aren't 100% satisfied. You do the math : )

I'm pretty sure there are many Buell owners and EBR customers who don't bother to post their experiences on BW. I'm sure what we see here is by no means an accurate enough picture to make any conclusive assessment, good or bad.

For the record, I bought a race ecm for my 09 in late March. I am currently on a 3000 mile roadtrip thru NM, TX, and AZ. Bike runs like a champ, with mileage varied by elevation-50 in central NM, 58 coming down the mountains from Flagstaff to Phoenix, low 40's around town back home. Only abnormality is a high idle upon initial startup(1600rpm), which goes back to about 1050 after a half mile of motion. I am quite pleased with it, and plan on a full report after my trip is done. YMMV.

Subject: ECM problems

Hello,

About two weeks ago I received an ECM from you (Order Number: 1587) for my 2008 XB12XT. I am running the stock air intake and muffler. When I first installed the unit the bike start up instantly and settled down to a perfect idle. On the road the fueling was "right on" pulling cleanly from 2K rpm right up to the redline. The surging I was experiencing from my stock ECM at cruising speeds (3K-4K rpm) disappeared.

After putting about 200 miles on the bike, mostly mixed commuting, the cold idle has deteriorated drastically. It starts fine settling into a 1500-1800 rpm fast idle but as soon as the fast idle drops out (about 20 seconds) the engine hunts between 2000 and 700 rpm a few times and generally stalls. It restarts easily and goes back to hunting for a proper idle speed. If I ride away the bike runs well and settles down to a proper idle by the time I make my first stop sign about .10 mile down the road. The surging at lower cruising rpms, notably 3000 rpm, has returned though it is not pronounced.

Overall the bike is running far better than it was on the stock ECM and I do not want to return the unit. Some other owners of the EBR ECM have posted on BadWeb that they are having similar problems so I want to give you another bit of feedback. I realize this unit is not intended for street use, perhaps it likes to be run under race conditions better. If this cold idle issue can be / is resolved please let me know.

Regards,

Ron Vennell

Ron,

We are in the process of understanding the problem, and are working on the dyno to duplicate the issue and resolve it. As you mention, this is a race unit, as we clearly define on our website. Therefore it cannot be optimized for the street. That being said, we believe some of the issues mentioned may occur on the track and so we are working to resolve them. When we do understand if it can be resolved , if so we will update the affected ECM units.

Thank you,

Tech Support

Just a note to those having probs with cold start, after not being able to get my ebr ecm to play nicely and having tried numerous TPS resets, today i rode out to a mates place and swapped out the stock ecm within a minute of the fan shutting off(~2 minutes after engine stop). I then kicked it in the guts and noted the smooth idle and went for a ride. There was no spluttering, crazy decel popping or that hesitation/backfire at 3k rpm. After returning i allowed the bike to cool for an hour or two and checked cold start and touch wood it was perfect. I will let it sleep tonight and check its cold start performance tomorrow and add comment.
Just saying maybe a hot swap out may improve its learning or maybe detection of inputs..

Hmmm bad startup today.
Idled around 1700 then started missing on one cyl then starts the usual backfiring and missing.
I will take a ride later today with these running probs and see if the cold startup probs carry through to hot running probs.

Edit]
Went for a bit of a blat this morning, still rough idle until warm and most probs have left except for some minor surging around 3k.

The race ECM likes to be flogged. It seems like the more I beat on it the better it runs. If I'm putzin' around town the bike starts running like crap. Going easy on the throttle seems to confuse it too, it likes a heavy hand.

Just out of curiosity (and I'll re-read the thread to be sure)...I don't see mention of anyone doing the AFV re-learn process.

Cruise, steady-state (like you had cruise control), for at least 20 minutes (I usually go about an hour when I can) to allow the AFV to 'relearn' and reset itself. My bike (granted, an '06 with DDFI2, not DDFI3) responds better to an AFV reset than it does to a TPS reset. If you're only out "hammering on it", the computer never gets a chance to set a new baseline, and from the coldstart issues I'm seeing here I think that's part of the problem. No hot baseline = no way to know when "this much more" coldstart fuel is "too much".

I want to say its between 3k and 4k - steady traffic-speed on I-70 is what I usually do; just a quick run from fredneck to 695 and back (because as you know, you have to do 80 in there to keep from getting rear-ended lol).
