Surely one of the first projects for Buell Racing. Simple swap-out of the Sportster mutant stock engine but will require replacing side stand with a real one.

Uhm, the entire frame of the water-cooled bikes is different from the air-cooled bikes, no 'simple swap-out' exists.

And they upgraded the kickstands in '08.

But yes, a water-cooled Uly type bike would be amazing.

I have an 07, with a build date of 06/06.

What am I looking for to see if my kickstand will one day "fall off" while holding the bike up (It is just the right distance the handle bar would hit my wifes car).

This was an attempt at humor, actually. Didn't realize the stand has been upgraded. Can it be retrofitted?

Nope, it will fall off when you begin to take the weight of the bike, surprising you with the sudden weight of the entire bike and make the bike and you topple over.

DAMHIK...

The reason I ask is I know the 06 was kickstand was recalled, and I figured they replaced the pivot part of the mechanism with the same part that is running through the current model (something about 2 bolts instead of one?) I don't have any outstanding recalls on my bike, which has a build date of before the recall, but is a MY07.

I need to search again when I have time.

I think I read the newer bikes have a wider foot on the kickstand (not worried about that part).

RECALL ID# 66985 - STRUCTURE:MOTORCYCLE KICKSTAND/CENTER STAND
Recall Date: July 11, 2006
Model Affected: XB12X
Component Affected: STRUCTURE:MOTORCYCLE KICKSTAND/CENTER STAND
Recall Summary: CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH TWO ISSUES THAT COULD COMPROMISE THE SIDESTAND'S PERFORMANCE. EITHER THE PIVOT BOLT FOR THE SIDESTAND LEG OR THE MOUNTING BRACKET BOLTS COULD BREAK, POSSIBLY WITHOUT NOTICE.
Consequence: IF EITHER OF THESE FAILURES OCCURS, THE MOTORCYCLE COULD FALL, POSSIBLY CAUSING DEATH OR INJURY.

SAAB had a recall several years ago, the adhesive for the warning stickers on the sun visors weren't strong enough and could be peeled off.

With the luck I've been having with my Uly, it'll end for me like that.

I'll have just ridden a couple of hundred miles, curves through the mountains at speeds well in excess of the limit. The Uly performing as if it were on rails. Thinking to myself "it looks dangerous, but with the right bike, even a semi-competent rider can be safe." I'll pull into the garage, shut off the bike, put the kickstand down, and start to lower it. I'll suddenly realize that I haven't engaged the stand fully, and it will fold up under the bike. The bike, already leaning, will lean further than it's supposed to. I'll suddenly realize what's going on, and pull frantically at the handlebars trying to right the bike. But the further she goes over, the harder she is to lift. I pull but feel it slipping away. Seeing the handlebars accelerating toward my wife's car door, I'll give it one last hard tug. The strain will blow my heart out. With a last gasp, I'll simultaneously feel my heart stop, my ass relax as I crap myself, and the bike drop against the car.

Good thing you'll already be dead when she sees her car! You won't even feel what she does to your body.

I actually had something like that happen to me in my garage. I pulled a VStrom into its place against a wall on the left, lowered the stand, nudged the bike a little further forward, and let the bike down. The stand didn't hold and the bike pinned me against the wall, requiring superhuman effort to get free with noone around to help.

my 06 fell on me a few weeks after i got it. same thing as doyle, had stand down and then rolled it forward a bit. pinned me between it and a bicycle. thankfully it did not go all the way down so i was able to lift it off, which was still fun with a broken collar bone.

I have done the same thing twice with my blast.

Thy can't the kick stands be spring loaded so that they ether lock into place or swing up and make a noise like bicycle kick stands do?

I've always thought the locking kick-stands and auto-canceling signals are two Harley features that should have carried over to EVERY other brand by now.

My dad can literally push/pull his Harley around the garage while it's on the kickstand. I can't trust mine if it's on a 1% downhill grade. I know it can't be that difficult to incorporate!

Mike I'll agree with both of those things, I can't think of anything more embarrassing than ride for 30 miles going bing bing bing, then to get where your going to have the kickstand fold up. We all dish Harley but there are a couple of things they do better than anyone else.

So I am the only one that loves the kickstand design? I have never had an issue with it, and I love the way it pops up on its own. I wish my Blast had it.

I owned a blast for a couple weeks (bought it as a back road toy). I almost had to walk one day because of that kickstand.

Start bike up, idles great, as soon as you start to give it gas and let the clutch out it would stall. WTF? It was because the kickstand was down : )

Sound have RTFM first.
