Sharkguy,

When you take it to the dealer, get them to check to make sure it has the latest download. When I first got my '08 Uly this past spring, it ran a lot like you are describing.

After the break-in period when it continued to run like crap, I took it in and got the latest download - it did wonders, and it has run like a champ ever since.

a lot of members assume that because thier 08 runs good, that everyone elses does and that the ones with complaints just dont understand the buell quirks...

ive owned a bunch of buells.. 2 08 models included... the first 08 ran like poop and after many trips to the dealer and downloads, it still ran like poop (i traded it on a roadking)... i heard all the typical stuff, like keep the rpms up (like i couldnt figure that out)...
my second 08 runs incredibly good...

at least until last month with 17k miles on the odometer, it started to have good days and marginal ones... after 2 trips to the dealer, it was discovered that i had a bad IAC motor... now it screams again..

free spirits do a fuel injection control unit for 2008 Buells -£207

http://www.trojan-horse.co.uk/prods/296.html

a little research indicates this is a TFI unit and superpior to a EFI and generation 3 Dobeck TFi technology - see link below - it states at this web site that power commanders subtract fuel and not just add it. The TFI only adds it, which 80% of time is (?) all that is needed.

All great things to check on. Thanks to everyone. I wouldn't say it runs like crap. But I can tell it is lean. It seems to be worse on hotter days. the surging is especially noticeable at around a steady 5000 rpms. It's not as bad as my beemer once was (it bucked), but it is noticeable. The pinging seems to happen at any rpms and comes and goes. The other day it ran great and I noticed less surging and didn't hear any pinging at all. Maybe it was the fuel, and it was a little cooler that day. Any way, pulling the plugs tomorrow, and also checking the plug wires. We'll see if there is any thing to go on there.

Well I got the plugs changed yesterday. The plugs I pulled out were the X plugs. I was hoping they would not be but they were. I replaced them with the NGK DCPR9EIX. I also did a TPS reset. The bike seems to perform a bit better as far as seat of the pants can tell. But the pinging and surging continues. If I hold the throttle at 5,000 rpms while going down the road the pinging is really evident. switch up to a higher gear and it goes away somewhat, but is still there off and on. I like to try and stay in the 5,000 rpm range so this really bugs me. The surging which was also evident at this same RPM didn't seem as bad. An inspection of the old plugs didn't really reveal much; both are light tan in color with no carbon fouling or melted metal on either. Since this bike is still running lean, I'm going to take him to the dealer after the holidays. Hopefully, they can sort this out and enrichen it up a bit.

Sharkguy,

You're using premium fuel, right?

I've never experienced any pinging that I've noticed. The one time I had some on my last bike (an HD) when I put in some low grade fuel...

Start simple. Check for an intake leak if you haven't already, that could lean you right out. If that's not it, it sounds like a dealer visit is in order - checking codes, fuel pressures, etc.

Ourdee, no not the same station every time. I have been using Hess whenever I can, as it's closest to the house. But I did put some Shell in it yesterday when I was out and the light came on a ways from home. Good idea Ratbuell, I will squirt some carb cleaner around some of the obvious intake areas to see if I can find any leaks. By idle air control motor are you all referring to the exhaust control motor that resides on top of the airbox? I did check that out for correct operation per the service manual and it seems to be working fine. I'm just wondering if now is a good time to take the bike in or should I wait until after the holidays? Are dealerships busier before or after the holidays? I have a rally I'm going to hit mid January and I'd like to take the Uly.

Nope. IAC is on the throttle body. It's a computerized needle and seat valve that lets air "bleed" past a closed throttle plate to maintain idle speed. There have been some instances of the IAC not sealing to the throttle body properly, or having issues with the IAC itself allowing an air bleed.
