Does anybody really know the particulars about this update? I've heard several different scenerios of when the fan comes on and goes off..I have an 09X w/the kit installed and had the update done..It is about 45-50 deg. out and the fan operates anytime over 15mph,anything below 15mph, including stopped and it shuts off..My question is,does anybody know if the fan runs at higher speeds? I can't tell at like 50mph plus..I'm concerned that my fan will wear out prematurely..It very rarely ran before,I thought it would run off speed and temp, but I think it only operates off of speed, because it's cold out and the fan is running??..Does anyone notice this??...Thanks too all.........Tim

Yes it runs at high speeds if the conditions are met. Your fan will be fine.

Is the ECM flash modifying fan operation required, strongly recommended, or just an option with the comfort kit on '09 bikes? Seems that the comfort kit is a pretty standard upgrade I'm sure I'll look at on my '09, but also seems that lots of people don't like the flash...

Cheers,

- HJ

My comfort kit is in the mail as we speak, but I've yet to decide whether I'm going to have the flash installed or not.

It seems to me the flash does the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I want.

I want the fan to NOT run while the bike is moving. Because 1) the comfort kit is directing more air over the rear cylinder. and 2) because the point is to be more comfortable, meaning without the hot air blowing on my leg.

If I could make my own comfort kit flash... it would never have the fan on over 20 MPH. It should NOT be needed with that kind of wind.

I guess I don't understand.

Mikef5000,
I totally agree w/your logic..I had mixed thoughts on even getting the flash..I like the idea of the fan not running after shut off..Not a big deal, but like it,but I would think the rear cyl. would still have to hit a certain temp. before the fan came on..?..Oh well

Froggy, do you know of the conditions that have to be met? Because it appears to be running all of the time when it's cold out, so I would think it would do the same when it is hot as well....Thanks for the replys guys..This whole thing is really no big deal, just trying to understand better...Thanks,Tim

Old fan logic: referenced only engine temp.

New comfort kit logic: references engine temp AND vehicle speed.

The "no fan below XX miles per hour" is a nod to all the folks who bitched about "my fan is annoying".

The fan running while the vehicle is at speed is likely a way to make sure there's no "wall" stopping the air - all the air being directed in by the new RSS - from being able to get OUT. And, if you've put in the whole kit INCLUDING the underseat duct, you won't get any air blowing on your leg. If you do...you're sitting on the wrong part of the bike. LOL. All the air with the duct comes out between the tail and the tire hugger. It's gale-force, and not a bit comes out of the side seat openings where the heat deflectors from years past go.

You make some good points.

I'm still 100% torn whether I'll do the update or not though.

Well from what I've learned,I would not do the update because the fan appears to running all of the time over 15mph..It never really bothered me when it ran after shut down anyhow, just thought I'd do the update to keep bike up to date..

"New comfort kit logic: references engine temp AND vehicle speed."
Ratbuell, thanks for the reply, but I'm not seeing the "engine temp" when it is 40-50 deg. out? Definately cool enough...Thanks all!!

It runs on the road...and I can hear it. I just want to hear the motor. If you do the comfort kit and not the upgrade your fan won't run much at all...mostly just at shut off. Which is fine. If I could, I would reflash and get the stock setting back on my 09. Shoulda known better...maybe there will be a way to reflash back someday.

I think the reflash is the way to go. My bike has never run better and any heat issues are gone. I didn't mind the the fan running after shutoff either, but I like it better that it doesn't run now. Kinda sucks sitting in a scenic turnoff and listening to the fan run instead of the sounds of nature...

I have had the comfort kit installed almost since it first came out. I have not had the flash to date. The bike is currently running great. Like most of the others, the fan only comes on at shut-down. I have never heard the fan run while moving. I still like the idea of the fan running at shut-down to preclude heat soaking the motor/oil. That makes perfect sense to me.

I think I will go without the updated flash for the time being.

New bikes run a little warm. My 06 Uly fan ran every day coming to work (some day more than others) down into the low 40s. Once it got 10k miles on it it moderated and the fan did not run at cooler temps.

The comfort kit on an 06 Uly is really great and my fan hardly ever runs now except for power off which is ok for me.

The other thing is that I replaced the fan when installing the kit and the old fan just sounded horrible in comparison. It worked reliably but sounded awful.

Interestingly, my comfort kit came in the mail today!

I installed the three outer pieces (scoops and exhaust shield) in about 10 minutes. The inner piece will go on at a later date when I have more time.

Mikef5000,

From my experience today, you better have a LOT of time or be very proficient. My dealer put his experienced Buell guy on my bike, a senior tech who worked with Buell in Wisconsin, and after quickly doing my windshield recall and replacing an exhaust valve actuator (my check engine light came on), it took him a full 2 hours to install the Comfort Kit, with the under seat part taking the BIG time. There is a duct, or something, that sits above the shock and directs air rearward. What does it look like? The tech said he had to nearly take the rear of the bike apart. I hope he didn't screw anything up but I'm sure glad I negotiated it into the deal! What is the 3rd. outer piece? I only see an air scoop and a heat shield? I was going to get the re-flash but I plan to hold off until I read a lot more about the pros/cons.

I got my underseat duct in without removing the battery tray or much of anything. The duct is very flexible. I did install mine in very warm weather so keep that in mind before bending the duct if it's cold. It took me about 20 minutes as I recall.

Buellerxt, the instructions basically say to remove the battery and just about everything under the seat, hence why it takes a while.

The right side scoop is two pieces, plus the heat shield for 3 pieces total.

Ths. guys. I believe it was the first one he had installed but he took a lot longer than you,Rwven. What does the under seat portion look like and how does it move air to the rear? Ths.

Ths. Froggy.
That is a great link and the pictures really help. Yep, I popped off the seat and mine looks just like that! Very cool. Again, I'm sure glad I negotiated that into the purchase! I appreciate the input.

It really is not that bad. It looks worse than it really is. Just take your time and follow the direction provided and it should be no problem. To me the most pain in the neck part was the bag brackets. Just make sure the froward ECM bolt is left in place and just rotate out of the way.
