I am thinking about buying a new '10 Uly. I have read alot about increasing power in the earlier models w/ pipes, air cleaners, ECM's and mapping. But can I still do the power upgrades on the latest models ? Gs |

"Hot Rodding" might be a misnomer - mufflers for sound (2 to 3 HP aside), ECM fiddling for drivability...I don't think the new ones really need anything. Just my too senses EDIT: In my opinion, Buell has done a fantastic job refining the Uly over the last few years since its inception. I think they really are plugged into what the rider wants and expects from his machine, as well as where there's room for improvement on their part...Bravo. Don't read about it...ride it. See if you really "need" the "improvements". I was working on a VRSCF sale a few months ago. Guy had read and re-read forum posts on what "had" to be done to "make the bike perform correctly" and all that. He was asking me what he needed to do for the kind of riding he was going to do. I asked him what he didn't like about the bike as it sat now. He looked at me like I was speaking Swahili. "Um....nothing, really". So...why do you "have" to do all this stuff? He ended up keeping his 883C - which he'd owned, as his FIRST bike EVER, for only a month and a half. Figured since he couldn't articulate what he did/didn't like about a bike...he'd get more practice before buying something with 130hp. The Uly is no slouch stock. Ride one first, and see. I have a Drummer on mine because I just like the sound. I probably didn't gain any HP...but I didn't lose any, and that's fine with me. Again...the bike's no slouch to begin with. You still have muffler options for a '10...but there is no ECM or programmer available for '08-up bikes with DDFI-III. The Drummer makes the bike run a *little* lean...but not dangerously so, at least not on most of the bikes we've baselined on the dyno. I run a race ECM on my '06 because I know I run my bike HARD, and I want to make sure not to hurt anything. Again...not a performance thing, just for the sound. |

I'm still waiting for someone to develop a "mellow" muffler for the Uly. |

I agree with Ratbuell, I put a race can and ECM on my '06 for the sound. With a little conservative throttle it's quiet enough not to piss off the neighbors (or "the man") in the early AM but sounds great (IMHO) when it's on the pipe. The best "hotrod" doodad I've bolted on were the passenger peg relocators. Thanks Ron. Now I get a full tank of fuel before I have to stop. My wife used to complain about knee pain after about an hour but no more. I'm going to put on the comfort kit soon, that should help with the toasted buns! Paintman, buy the bike and enjoy it! Tim |

If what you mean by "hotrod" is to gain the ability to woop ass on the next Duc or Gsxr you come up behind then the answer is RSVP. Read Study Visualize Perform Track days are a great tool. You already have the best bike. Become very good at using it. |

Thanks for the replies & info. Being a long time HD rider I guess this question comes natural because it is the first change I usually do I have been demo-riding many times and I think the only thing I would like is to hear the SWEET sound of the awesome motor a little more. I love the MOTOR in this bike! Gs |

If you want more sound then just hold open the interactive exhaust valve with a pinch type lead shot fishing weight on the cable up by the air cleaner. |

Rwven Posted on Sunday, September 06, 2009 - 09:53 am: I'm still waiting for someone to develop a "mellow" muffler for the Uly. What you want is a CherryBomb glass pack stuffed into the stock can, like I did. It's loud enough to sound like a motorcycle should; but it's not so loud as to draw unnecessary attention. Or offend the neighbors on Sunday morning. I've asked them and had no complaints. |

at the end of the day i need a Ully which does 160 to keep up with my buddy's bikes, a modifies fz1, a modified sprint and a speed triple, what do i do? i can out corner them for now just because i have more experience, but in a straight away they eat my lunch making up whatever buffer i built up in the corners and then some. the only advantage i have is that i can ride 6-8hrs on a Ully and they have to stop after 2. what do i do to quickly help my top end, i get to 125 then i can count the seconds between each mph, watching my buddies pass me? if i had the cash i would just buy a sport bike, the cr is just out of reach for now. what can i do for an 08 to improve the performance by 20% |

Let your buddies go. Live longer. If you have to do 160...get a track bike and do track days. |

Oh, and do the math.....if you can ride eight hours at at time, and they can only go two, well I'm not going to solve a story problem for you tonight....but you will end up days ahead in a cross country trip. |

You can lower your gear ratio by 15% with a nine primary. It will make your bike much quicker with the same top end. (about 125 max) |

Get way ahead of them when they stop at the 2 hour mark and they'll never be able to catch you. Heck, they won't even be able to ever see you. |

I can get about 4hrs out of a tank (60mph, 60mpg, 4 gallons, 240 miles), then I stop and have a bite. Its quite hilarious on extended slab sessions, you see the same cars passing you over and over again, it makes it pointless to go faster and burn more gas just to have to stop more. |

It always make me laugh when someone get's frustrated because their Uly can't keep up with 140+ hp sportbikes on the straights. Dude, if that's what you want to do, you bought the wrong bike. Short of a blower or turbo, you will never get that kind of hp out of this motor. Buy a different bike, or enjoy the Uly for the purposes for which it was built. What I find irritating is those out there who purport the Uly's "measly" 103hp as some kind of fault that needs to be remedied. |

how is god's name can you guys get 60mhg, the best i get on my 08 is 45 and typical is 40. what is the secret? there is nothing wrong with the 103hp, it would just be better if there was more, why do you think the discussions about an 1125 motor in a ully keeps coming up and nothing about the xb9. here in TX there can be nice straight wide open spaces between the twisties and being able to open it up is fun. i am not getting rid of my ully any time soon but i don't mind working on it myself especially if i can improve the performance and if not i do see a sport bike being added to the stable. |

Sell the Uly. Buy a used Kamahozuki literbike. Keep up with your friends. End up dead, getting your license yanked, unable to afford insurance, or whatever. No way your Uly will ever - EVER - keep up with I4 literbikes on straights unless you spend enough money on it to have bought that new CR and still have cash leftover; oh, and the Uly won't be recognizable as such when you're done, either. |

I can get 48 to 50mpg even when I'm beating on it. Worst I've ever seen out of the Uly was 42mpg, and god knows what I was doing to it then. |

Damn. I *average* 42 on my '06. Race ECM, open inner airbox (stock filter for now), Drummer. Top case only (Journey sidecases typically eat 3mpg). I'm 6'4", 185lb. Granted, that's typically on my 11 mile commute to work in the AM, and some fire roads on the way home...and I'm not gentle on the throttle...but *60*? Wow...share. Please. |

Well, not too sure how this turned into a mileage discussion, but here's my .02. 09 Uly, I live at 5000ft and often ride in elevations around 9000 to 10000. My speeds on the highway are usually pretty high - 75 to 85 typically and rides in the twisties are spirited, but not ham-fisted. Here's the data from my mileage calculator in my G-Phone. I have missed one entry in the past 8 months,so the "Best" mileage will be off, but the average should be pretty close by now. Average Distance between fillups: 133 Last distance between fillups: 177 Average Economy: 43.98 Worst: 32.82 Best: 53mpg (by my memory) |

One reason I am not in a rush to fix the Uly is because its a gas hog averaging only 60mpg, then it needs new tires every 15k-18k miles. I now commute to work on my Blast and get 85mpg on that and it keeps getting a little better the more I ride it. Once in a while I will take my CR to work depending on my mood, usually only on payday as it gets a whopping 45mpg, and probably will need a new rear tire before the first real service. The front tire has about half the mileage of the rear, so it should last a while |
