Been watching all of the 77 connector threads and early on installed the Fatty Voltage Monitor. Every few weeks I would get intermittent voltage fluctuations (monitor goes yellow then red then whoop back to green. This would happen for a few days and then nothing for a week or three. Each time I would take apart the 77 connector, look for issues, dielectric grease the damn thing and then wait for the problem to reoccur. Sooner or later, return it would...wash rinse, repeat. I even took it to the dealer after it stayed red on the way to MotoGP last year. THey diagnosed loose connector (no sht)and it was solid again for a few weeks. Sooner or later the problem would return. At one point I was convinced the issue was the voltage monitor...silly, silly man.

Last weekend I cut the offending connector out and replaced it with the brass screw on connectors and sealed heat shrink that many on here have used. Presto, solid green monitor! Only took me a year to figure it out....

One other interesting change - I have always had the pause start thing going on. Hit the start button wait a sec - than rumble. I did the usual - sand and star washer, check posts, yada, yada - always the same. Cutting out the POS 77 connector seems to have remedied that too!

If only I would pay attention the some of what I read here....well never mind.

What brass screw-on connectors are you talking about?

RSH:

Since there is an updated part it would seem to me that the newer bikes would have been built with the "update" as a part of the stock configuration. Do you know what year the updates were made "stock"?

I think 08 and up have a new connector.

I cut out my connector and soldered it when my bike had 500 miles after hearing about it here,no problems.

The 08+ bikes have the update.
If you happen to buy a new voltage regulator, it now comes with the updated connector installed as well as the kit to update the 77 connector.

My voltage regulator failed last week (at 65k mi). The 77 connector showed slight signs of overheating on the positive wire only. The new regulator comes with an upgraded connector that can be installed. It has beefier round pins and sockets instead of the flat pins in the original (06-?). I still didn't trust it. I crimped and soldered #10 ring terminals to the wires and connected them with stainless 10-32 bolts and nuts then taped everything up. They won't overheat now. I promise.

Teeps -

Got them from Lowes; strip end of wire slide into connector and tighten screw, then shrink glue filled heatshrink over the entire thing. They were about $10 each (although I have seen some on here get them or similar for less). My guess is that the ground side was not good and could not carry the voltage at higher RPM's. Works now. Yeah.

Another odd thing about my final symptoms - The monitor was solid green up to 4k RPM, then (and typically only when warm)it would start to drop out.

Thanks Nipsey.

Has this specific set screw type splice been used before in place of the "77" connector? I don't recall seeing any photos of a set screw type connection.

If not, it will be interesting to see if vibration will break the wire strands at the point of contact with the screw.
