so i need to get this straightened out. and when you cant seem to get straight answers from where your supposed to. i'll just go to badweb for the real answers!

i know the seat on the uly has been changed since 06. if i remember right the 07's and later come with the low seat on them? so if you were to order the accessory low seat for an 07 or later it would be the same height as the stock seat correct? if thats the case has anyone come across a good way to get your feet a little closer to the ground without sacrificing the ground clearance?

i have a customer that really wants a uly and not so much the xt(he's coming off of a klr) but was hoping to make it a little more confidence inspiring when at a stop.

has anyone done any shaving on their seat to make it even lower?

any ideas?

No_rice- there are three Uly seats available, the "tall" 06 seat, the "low" 06 seat, and the standard 07-up seat. The low 06 seat and standard 07-up seat are approximately the same height; the low 06 seat has different covering and a jell insert. Supposedly the slightly different shape of the 07-up seat makes it best for reaching the ground.

I haven't seen a customized seat but that certainly seems like a possibility. My only other suggestion would be taller boots; Icon's Tarmac and Accelerant boots are supposed to have thick soles that are good for this.

""i have a customer that really wants a uly and not so much the xt(he's coming off of a klr) but was hoping to make it a little more confidence inspiring when at a stop""

I came off a KLR prior to my Uly, and added the '06 seat to get the additional height that I liked.

If he's coming off a KLR (which are pretty high) he should have no problem with the '06 seat, at all.

Another thing, the KLR's are top heavy compared to the Uly.

I have had each of the 3 seats and I like the '07 and later seat the best... it gives me the best reach and has decent comfort. Much more comfortable than the low '06 torture device. Another benefit of the '07 seat is the front section extends back further, enough that my wife can slide her leg over the low section behind me when she gets on and off... she doesn't complain about getting on and off anymore...

Boots... I had thick soles with a bit of lift put on an old pair of boots and the extra 5/8" reach and leverage is a night and day improvement (i am 5'10 1/2")

I have both the 06 original seat and the 07 seat. For me, 07 is to low and the 06 while a it is good on height but the shape is poor and like both of these seats they have a tendency to slide you forward.

Sargent Seats has a great web site on "how" to shape a seat as part of their questionnaire. You first have to do a thorough analysis of what you would like to achieve knowing full well there is no perfect seat. Think about:

1. Forced ergonomic position
2. Size and shape of the seating platform
3. Type of padding suspension

Part of the process involves acknowledging their LAP principle - Long-distance Alternation of Position.

Shaping foam seats is not hard just tedious and requires patience and a few good tools. I took my 06 original seat and first established a level line that I wanted to acheive to keep me from sliding forward and then I wanted to create a better countoured shape as well as moving the rise back a coupel inches to provide more room to adjust positions. Also, wanted to narrow the front onthe 06 seat so it was easier to do a stand-over when stopped as the 06 original is pretty wide at the front

Carved it up and sanded it down, took it for a few test rides , made a few more changes and then put the cover back on. Much improved and well worth the effort.

This is apic of the 06 next to the 07 that I used to model where I wanted to move some features on the seat. Essentially had to lower the rear portion of the drivers portion of the 06 but not lower the front portion. Just finished 500 miles on the new seat and it is great!

Make the 'horn' (front section) of the seat narrower. It gives the illusion of reduced height because the rider can get their knees closer together when feet-down. More of a straight line from hip to toe, instead of an 'out-and-then-down' line.

Thats exactly right Joe. I shaved off the edges and sides of the front horn and it is much more comfortable at a stop

: )

Hate to say it, but that's from the HD book. It's how they do the "reach" line of seats.

Wow...Buell guys *can* learn something from HD. LOL.
