After picking up my '08XT from the dealership after an ex valve actuator replacement and 10k svs, I went for a 150 mi ride. When I got home and checked the oil it was at the level of the filler cap and running out. If this is due to overfilling at the dealership does anyone know of specific mechanical problems this could cause ie new air filter needed? I just want to be prepared when I go back in a few days. Thanks.

If it was that high, it was definitely overfilled. Excess oil is likely to get blown out into the air box, and it may blow all over the inside of the air filter. It can also coat the air temperature sensor in the airbox which will cause problems with performance.

I'd suction some oil out to get the level down the proper level, and ask them to remove the outer and inner airbox covers and inspect for excess oil when you go in. There may be a mess for them to clean up.

lol...my dealer did the same freakin' thing. I had oil coming out the dipstick when I went to check it after getting it home from the dealer. I checked and had oil inside my air box as a result. I cleaned the thing up myself rather than let me dealer to even more damage. When you want something done right.......

My dealer as well is pretty careless with the oil levels. For my 1, 5, and now 10K service the dealer has over filled my oil every time. Not to the degree you are experiencing, but it typically comes back about 1/4" above the X'x. I've given up arguing with them about it, because they claim they put in exactly 2.5qts. I've never experienced performance problems, but I do smell burning oil for the first day or so after a service.

Sounds like they didn't get all the oil out before filling it up.

Tobyhall:
I would be on the phone asking when they would be coming to pick it up rather than riding it back to them and risking more airbox/air filter oiling, seal blowing, etc.

There is an issue with oil draining back into the engine as soon as it's turned off. If I wait 1 minute, no oil shows on my dipstick. If I drain my oil after it sits more than a few minutes I get less than 2 qts out of the swingarm. If this is what the shop is doing and then they add 2.5 qts it will definitely be overfilled.
I check my oil with the bike running.
Also, this freaks some people out, when I drain my swingarm I start the engine and let it idle until the drain flow begins to lessen, probably about 15 seconds. This way most of the oil that has drained back into the engine it pumped out and I get a true oil change. At this point I add a little more than 2.5 qts and everything works out.

The oil level on my 08XT will drop after a few minuets. I too, check my oil with the motor running and have had very consistent results. When I change the oil, I have everything ready for the change. I start the motor and let it idle Then shut it down and immediately pull the drain plug (I loosen the plug first). With this method, I have been getting most of the oil out. When I install 2.5 quarts, the level is at the lower 2X mark. I have had no oil spray issues in the airbox. If I need to top off the oil over time, I maintain it at the 2X mark. I have had to add 250 cc of oil in 4K miles. This process has worked for me so far.

For those of you that have dealers doing oil changes, it would behoove you to check your oil before you ride the bike from the dealer. You think too much oil is bad, just think if somehow they forgot to put in the oil after draining it. You'd really have something to complain about. Personally I can't understand having anybody other than yourself changing your bike's oil. Why bitc.h here about oil change snafu's when you should be on the horn to your most trusted mechanic that screwed it up. By the way, good luck with that. Change your own oil.

Side note to Electraglideer 1997. Just remove the 3 screws on the chin fairing on right side and you can get to the oil filter very, very easily, thus no reason no tto also change the filter. Simple job. like changing out the bad fan.

Why have the dealer do the oil change?
1) when you live in a condo with only a carport, it's a pain in the ass to lay out all your stuff & do this work amidst the dirt & other crud n the ground and work between other cars - especially in winter.
2) as long as the bike's under warranty, I don't want to give the dealer any excuse to throw blame back my direction if something were to go wrong.

Had I the proper space though, I would enjoy doing all work & repairs myself.

Because you might not have the tools, the time, the space, apartment wont allow it, you can afford it, or you don't want to be bothered?

My dealer has a special service program, $700 for a year (cheaper in multi year), they come pickup your bike, includes service cost with syn3, wash your bike, detail it, and then drop it back off at your place. It is very nice if you don't mind it being gone for 3 days (day 1 pickup, day 2 service, day 3 dropoff). I usually had warranty work to be done too, so it was great.
