I am in the middle of a long long road trip and my stock shock has failed. I am in a single location for a week so I am trying to find a used Uly shock to have sent while I am here. Would prefer one with under 10,000 road miles on it, but I wont be to choosy. Thanks!

This is why we need the 'BEER' idea to re-emerge. Anyway - had same issue in Yellowknife last year. Buell said 7-10 days to get a shock shipped. I would call your dealer and see if they have one in stock or would canibalize a showroom (or used) Uly and FedX it to you. Perhaps someone has a spare if they put on an aftermarket one. It only takes about 2 hrs to change if ya got the tools. Good luck. j

I dont have one but I can help with the process.

It only took me 15 minutes to put mine on and off.



IIRC

remove seat

jack bike @ muffler. I used a log under the muffler and made a tripod w/ log/kickstand/front tire to lift rear

unbolt holding bracket to shock res.

unbolt preload adjuster (handcrank wheel under left side of seat)

unsrcrew ecm to move it, leave it plugged up.

move the ecm to get a better handle on shock res when you remove shock asm.

unbolt shock (two bolts one nut)

wiggle out shock asm.

reverse the process w/ new shock and use some loctite on shock bolts.

I haver a spare shock but I'm headed out on a training exersise to ft polk. If you want to use the shock to get you home and send me it back when you get back to your home I'm willing to send it out if you tell me where to send it.

The wife will send it out first thing if your willing to send it back to me. I took it off becuase it seemed to be leaking but as soon as i took it off not a single smear of fluid. WTF!! so I have a spare in cases just like this. BTW oit had 44,000 miles on it.

Thanks for all of the responses. Right now I am in Redwood City south of San Fran. I am going to look into having it rebuilt by some of the local suspension specialists. Thanks for the offer Rotorhead but I am hoping to fix this and not bandaid it at this point. HOlla!!!

So as a final update for those interested, I purchased a new Buell shock from the dealer. The local suspension experts that have rebuilt Buell shocks suggested it because the price difference between a rebuild and a new shock is small.

The brand new Buell shock was $434, a high quality rebuildable shock from Ohlins, Elka, Penske, etc. is much more in the $800 and up range.

A shock sock will go on the new one once installed.

Wademan, what is the purpose of the sock? Did the local suspension experts have anything to say about the effects of the fan blowing super hot air on the shock?

Firstbatch, here is the sock I have on my Multistrada to protect the shaft from rocks, dirt, grime, etc.

Firstbatch: The sock keeps road grit, mud, dust, ect. from getting on the shock shaft and wearing out that main seal. I bet my shock would have lasted much longer if I had a sock on it during its entire life. And no, no mention of fan heat... you know sportbikes get very hot and vent air on the rider and rear shock also... I don't worry about such things.
