I have the stock short windscreen. The air blast hits me in the chest. I would like to have more protection from the wind but don't really like the looks of those bigger screens. I am 6-0 32 inseam.I am thinking either a laminar lip ,will it get the wind up high enough? or they factory tall, not sure how well they work. Any help would be great

You might want to try the tall Buell screen with one of the adjustable mounts. I use one made by Madstad Engineering, but Palmer (a board sponsor) makes one that a lot of people like.

Timn, I'm 6'-0 tall and I have the Buell tall shield. The wind hits me right in the face. In the winter I have a Cee Baileys tall windshield and the wind hits me on the top of my helmet and gives me a head ace so I hate it! In fact I didn't even bother to put it on last winter.

The Buell tall windshield only keeps the bugs off my clothes but my helmet looks like s*** with all the bugs on it.

I'm using the Zero Gravity Sport Touring screen which is about the same height as the Buell tall screen. Overall, I'm happy with it. I'm 6'-2", 34" inseam and the wind hits me right below the chin, leaving my head in relatively clean air. There's no buffeting, but after riding a completely naked bike for a stretch at 75 - 80 mph and then getting back on my Uly, I have to say, it is noisier with the tall screen; a lot noisier. I wear a Shoei RF-1000 and on a naked bike, it is very quiet, even at 80. With the ZG tall screen I don’t get buffeting, but I do get a lot of whistling in the ears. On a long ride, ear plugs are a must.

From what I've read after quite some time hanging out here on Bad Web is, if you want quiet, no buffeting, and complete wind protection you're pretty much going to have to sacrifice the looks of your bike. Though the owners of them may disagree with me, in my opinion, all of the full coverage screens, laminar lips, etc. are butt ugly. But they work. The stock, Buell tall, or ZG sport touring look great on the Uly and I won't sacrifice its sweet looks just to get rid of a little whistle. If I wanted full wind protection, I’d have bought a Gold Wing.

I have to agree with HANGETSU, all of the good ones are UGLY. I run a California Scientific tall in the winter. I also use it for long trips in the summer. Its so damn ugly you have to close 1 eye to get on the bike. It does block the wind though. I'm 5'11", 32" inseam.

+1 on the tall shield with the Palmer bracket. For daily riding I run it all the way forward and all the way down. the wind blast hits just about in the forehead area. This weekend I did about 550 miles of highway riding with the shield all the way up and all the way forward. The wind blast went right over my head so my helmet was in relatively clear air but I could easily still see over the top of the shield. I'm 6'2".

Edit: My helmet was also bug free...

then again...to quote someone else i've seen here on the BadWeb..."If I was worried about having an ugly bike, I wouldn't have bought a Uly!" Lets face it, we don't have the best looking bike in the world to start with

I think my bike is purty in an industrial sort of way. When I ride past the pasture lands, the dairy cows look up as if the feed tractor is coming. Had one of them there new fancy smantzy glitzy bright metal flake yellow GoldWings. On that thing I sort of felt like I shoulda been in a Michael Jackson Music Video.

Pso - Carefull! Those Bovines can become violent if provoked. Just don't paint your Uly John Deere green and drive by without throwing off some hay. I Use a cut down (16") parabellum on Palmer brackets - not too ugly - and all the way up and forward puts the wind over the top of my helmet. 5'8". j

My bike hasn't looked that clean since I signed the papers and rode off from the dealer. Glen, you must carry a dust brush and handy wipes with you.

I am 6'-4" with 36" inseam (don't understand why so many think the Uly is a tall bike, BTW).

I have the Buell tall shield, and it deflects wind blast from the body for a comfortable highway ride, but at the expense of a lot more noise, even with earplugs. No helmet buffeting problem, just much more noise.
I recently switched back to the stock screen just to lower the noise level.
In the heat of summer, I will stick with stock, as it is easy to pull off and makes the ride noticeable cooler.
I don't do much highway running, but even if I did, I am not sure the extra noise is a good trade-off anymore.

I think I may check into the Palmer brackets, though, depending on cost.

"I think I may check into the Palmer brackets, though, depending on cost."

At today's exchange rate it's just under 105.00 plus a bit extra for shipping to the USA. I paid $110.00+/- total a few weeks ago. Best $110.00 I've spent in quite awhile.

Rwven,
Did you spend the extra $15 for the no-tools adjusters? Not much info on website about them, but I am guessing they are just the plastic knobs that are visible in one of the photos.
Money is tight, so your opinion would be appreciated.
Not sure I am ready to pay more for brackets than the shield costs, but I am a big believer in adjustability, at my height.
"normal" just doesn't work for me in many cases.

I'm 5'10" and the tall Cee Baileys works pretty good for me during the cold or long haul rides....

When its warm I go with the nothing option...

I started with the stock short screen, but within a week, ordered the Medium California Scientific. Up until about a week ago, that's what I ran 100% of the time. However, I swapped my short screen for a tall with another BWB member a while back, so I decided to try the palmer brackets with the adjustable knobs. I'm 5'11'', and found that for me, there is no "perfect" setting. However, running the screen all the way up and all the way back seems to be pretty darn good. Better than the medium CS screen ever was, so I've got no complaints there.

Having owned both the CS and now Tall w/Palmer brackets, I'd say go with the Tall & Palmer brackets. It provides you a lot of choices for wind protection.

I'll have to chime in on behalf of Pso & Glen; I think the Uly is an awesome looking bike. Its looks had some role to play in my decision to buy it. It is an "Adventure Bike (of sorts)" and its looks shout "ADVENTURE" (at least until you put one of those big ugly windscreens on it ; ). To me the Uly has the looks of an exotic European bike, but made in America. In this category there is not a single Japanese bike that holds a candle to the Uly in terms of looks. IMHO

My bike is beautiful. Try taking a good, long freeway run with the windshield removed. You might like it better. Nice clean air with no buffeting at all. And best of all, it's free to try out. You can spend a ton of money trying all the options we have and end up with something you're not satisfied with.

Can anybody compare the Madstad with the Palmer brackets? I have the Madstad with Uly tall and like it but when reading what's said about the Palmer, I get a "grass is greener..." sensation.

I have the Palmer setup, and have seen the Madstad setup in person. Pros of the Palmer setup are that it reuses your stock windscreen and flyscreen. The Madstad one replaces both because of some mysterious "excessive vibrations". I have been using a stock short screen and the Palmer tall screen on my brackets, and neither vibrate much more than the stock screen with stock mounting grommets. The Madstad looks like a nice setup too, but even with the black aluminum it looks out of place with the other plastics.

I recently became an XT owner and am not getting on with the stock screen - I'm 6', 32" inseam. At highway speeds there's a lot of noise in my already noisy helmet (Shoei XR1000), so much so that a recent 450 mile trip has left me with a slight ringing in my right ear, even having worn plugs. Luckily only very quiet and I'm still hoping it'll fade with time (gulp).

So, I'm in search of something better. At the moment I'm thinking of trying the smaller X screen, but also contemplating the Palmer kit. I used to ride a naked on which I removed the bubble screen it came with which improved things for me, so might try no screen at all for a while also.

I am 6', 32" inseam also. Just a suggestion for using the Uly small stock screen. Try moving your head and upper body back a bit. I rolled my bars back a couple of inches and have no noticeable wind blast, but if I push forward far enough it is noisy and buffets some.

My 2c worth. I am 6'1 and have an 07. Just fitted a Zero Gravity Sports Touring screen (about 3 inches taller than standard). It is great. Wind hits me in the chest, no buffeting but a little more wind noise..earplugs may work for that or maybe a new helmet (shopping time).

Yep, it seems that we all have about the same experience. I really like the ZG touring screen. Admittedly, the noise can be a bit much, but that can be mitigated easily enough. I find it to be about the best option out there for those who can tolerate a little discomfort and don't want to sacrifice the sexiness of their machine.

I just installed the Madstad touring 18" with the brackets. It's adjustable. When you find the right setting for your height, seating position and riding style it works well. I'm a very satisfied Uly rider since I installed it.

You can check it out here...
