Riding today on my xt with 2150 miles, start to hear a noise, it is intermittent so I stop, check everything out and find nothing. I start towards home and it starts to get worse and I notice a wobble in the back wheel. I get off again and notice the right side rear wheel bearing is the culprit. I limp it a few miles home and call my dealer. They say I am responsible for any tow, is this true for a bike under warranty? The best part yet is that it is rainy today, and supposed to get warm and sunny in the next few days. | ||

Don,t that stink? " To obtain warranty service, return your motorcycle at your expense within the warranty period to an authorized dealer. Our dealer should be able to provide warranty service during normal business hours and as soon as possible, depending upon the workload of the dealer's service department and the availability of necessary parts." I would make sure to mention that you want the newest seals aka the black ones. I am sure someone will have the correct part #. | ||

Sorry man, that sucks the big one. Used to be, we as purchasers of new Buells got a one year free HOG membership, and before that HOG and BRAG. The towing would have been covered under that. I assume you didn't get a HOG membership? | ||

Do you have the ability to just take them the back wheel? Would they allow this? Just throwing that out as an alternative to a tow. | ||

No HOG membership. I could take the wheel off but the service guy I talked to said they would need to "diagnose" the problem then contact Buell to see if it is waranteed so I want to take the whole bike. I just don't like the way the service people are only worried about covering their ass and not just taking care of an obvious warranty issue. | ||

you need a friend with a trailer. I have a great dealer, he came and picked mine up no charge the last time i had an issue edit....didn't post this to gloat or anything, just wanted people to know there are great dealers around (Message edited by petereid on April 21, 2009) | ||

Bearing failure can happen at any mileage. I hope it doesn't happen to mine, I've only got 24,000 miles on 2006 Uly. I've already had to change my rear tire twice, front tire once, one headlight bulb, and both sets of brake pads! That's just not right to have all these extra expenses! | ||

Bearing failures do seem to be a bit random. My X1 front failed at 45,000. I had the rears replaced at 50,000 as a precaution. At 80,000, I checked the front by popping off the seal and they looked mint with plenty of clear lube in there. Water invasion seems to be the leading culprit. It was in my X1 case. The bearings and cage were rusty shrapnel. | ||

My first rear wheel bearings went out at 12,000 miles -- last year on Good Friday, near Woodstock, Georgia while headed to NC for the weekend. $160 tow to Earl Small's in Marietta JUST before they closed, plus a night at a HOJO down the road. So no, you are on your own with incidentals like that ! On the plus side, Small's had it finished Saturday at 10 am. This year, when my bearing were starting to feel "iffy" at 29,000 miles, I had the black seal replacements done in time, under warranty. Much better Easter weekend trip.  The new ones you're after. 2K sucks, I just replaced my NTN originals at 56K. I am NOT convinced it's a bearing problem and we'll see whether black bearings start failing also. | ||

I would take the rear wheel in by itself. Ask your dealer if this is ok, as it sounds like they may be difficult. | ||

Well, apparently it is NOT the long travel suspension on the X which is causing bearing failures. | ||

Ive had rear bearings (orange) fail on my SS. Thats even less travel than the XT. | ||

Do the bearings come as a set or do you have to order 2? I just ordered them, E0005.02A8B, and received a ripped open parts bag with one Orange seal one in it. I thought the Orange seal ones were E0005.02A8A, and yes the bag says PKG QTY 2 on it. I think I already know the answer to my question. I won't mention the dealer because I believe it was an honest mistake and plan on emailing them tomorrow. BTW this is the third time I've had to replace due to failure, @ 17,000 miles.  | ||

They're one bearing per package for the B numbers. I just had 'em put a new set on my rear wheel at tire swap time, and at 5k (mostly rain and salt riding) they were starting to go. | ||

I just replaced my rear bearings at 19k with the black bearings as preventive maintenance (came in a single package). I am also installing the latest version of the drive belt. With the bike up on the m/c jack the belt is extremely tight...I've decided to install the spring loaded pulley bracket (Free Spirits) to prevent over stressing the belt through it's suspension travel. I believe excessive belt tension has some bearing on the problem. No pun intended! | ||

Just take the rear wheel in. They can't possibly refuse it if you show up with it in hand. If they give you grief in the service department then stand your ground and demand the owner of the dealership to explain their BS treatment of you. No way in hades that a bike on warranty should cause you to incur towing expenses when it is clearly not necessary. | ||

Agree with taking the wheel only in, assuming you are at least slighlty mechanical, and have a torque wrench to follow the proper manual procedure to remove and replace (especially replace). Otherwise, are you an AMA member? They now offer free roadside assistance if you joined or renewed this year. I renewed early just to get that started. It is better coverage than the basic AAA coverage (which doesn't cover motorcycles anyway), and an AMA membership is far cheaper than the upgrade AAA that covers bikes and motorhomes. The AMA coverage also covers your cars, and all members of your immediate/dependent family. It alone is now worth AMA membership, no matter what you think of the organization. | ||

I have an 08 XT with 11,500 miles on board, So far I am okay. I do have the black seals. with the 4th set of tires on the bike, I have check them a couple of times. | ||

If you do use the AMA towing benefit, you may need to "educate" the call center worker on the other end of the line. Mine was friendly but rather adamant that AMA did not cover towing on weekends, which would have been ridiculous and lame if it were true, which it wasn't. |
