It’s as simple one-two-three:

1. Remove your puny stock 55-watt H7 bulb.

2. Install your new brighter Hella 100-watt H7 bulb in your low-beam housing.

3. Now just park your bike in the garage and fire up your headlights.

Yep, it’s just that easy.

Yeah, in all fairness, I think what really did it is that the bike was stationary, and parked in a corner of the garage with the headlight on and nearly against a wooded plank that was against the wall. I was fiddling with ECMspy at the time. Had it been on the open road with more air flow, perhaps it would have been a different story.

I've had a 65W Osram bulb in the high beam for over a year and a half (24,000 miles worth) with NO problems.
Of course, a lot of the chrome in my HID low beam reflector is toast.

Install a headlight fan.

I read a warning on rallylights.com that the were not suitable for plastic light housings. They seem to have told the truth.

A Couple of Questions From A New Ulysses Owner:
Love the way the arrangement looks but all seem to agree that headlights not the best.
1) Would cutting a couple of large holes in the reflector to promote ventilation help prevent cooking lenses/reflectors?
(The holes could be screened over.)
2) Are there any aftermarket glass lenses or slip in metal liners available?

Qustion For Dr. Greg:
Back when I had hair Edmund Scientific had experimental heat pipes available on the cheap.
Cooling a headlight would seem a ideal application for a heat pipe. Know a source of heat pipes to play with?

I don't think there's too much you can do other than upgrade the front lens to glass.
It looks like straight radiant heat killed that front cover.
Any tiny imperfection in the clear plastic would capture some of the light and convert it directly to heat.

These housings are glued together, right?

If only they were held together with screws, we could perhaps fit some glass lens instead.

I hate to say this but my X1 has a better headlight than my XB12X. (with the same wattage bulb too!)

Hey 99savage

A better bet, IMHO, would be the HID conversion kit. A lot of guys here have done that. I have the kit, but as yet, never installed it.

I plan to buy the E-code headlight assy., and try that, as a replacement for my fried unit.

FWIW, I noticed a distinct improvement in the stock 09 headlight housing's beam, projection, and light, over my old 06. So much so that I ALMOST didn't install the HID kit I had laying around. Silly me. The HID's are in there anyway, and rock. But considering how inexpensive Buell parts tend to be, the housing off an 09 seems an easy improvement.
