Quick review of a Buell Race Pipe on my 2008 XB12XT. 1. There is no fitment issues with my Ulysses (kickstand). 2. Some popping on deceleration but I’m waiting to see if the computer will adjust (if at all) to the new airflow and maybe minimize it. 3. Sound is PERFECT for me (and my wife). There is some grumble down low but it almost sounds like the stock pipe at cruising speed (around 3,500 rpm for me). No droning or anything like that. Some "attitude" with the ability to ride for an hour without any issues with the sound. 4. Maybe it’s me (or it’s FINALLY getting warm in central Florida) but the right side seems even hotter than before. My right leg cooks. Forget riding in any speeds below 35mph, it’s way too hot. 5. I had the dealership install the pipe and they said they also flashed the computer as well. Just to ensure I was up to date with flashes. So I’m not sure if that is contributing to the hotter right side or not. I asked them to do this because I was getting sh*tty fuel mileage. Last tank before the pipe was 25 mpg average (almost all street riding). | ||

Your right leg IS hotter because you're running the stock map (LEAN!). If HD flashed it, I imagine they flashed it to update stock; not to make it work with the race pipe. I don't know if it supports the '08, but you need to look into the whole ECMSpy thing... That heal all of your ills and there is, in all likelihood, somone in your area who can dump a race map into it for you. Or you can just buy a race ECM from HD (if they still make them??) | ||

They don't, and last I'd heard ECMSpy didn't support the '08s. ...I'm quite upset by the combination. | ||

You'll be able to find a Race ECM on eBay if you keep looking regularly - though I'm sure that they'll be more and more expensive now that the ECM is unavailable new. | ||

...an '07 Race ECM won't work on a '08. New fuel injection system (DDFI3 vs. DDFI2 and the addition of a new sensor or two). To my knowledge, they never produced a 2008-compatible Race ECM in the first place. | ||

You need a race licence to buy the race ecm for it. Your best bet is to use ECMspy. | ||

Yeah, the "update" was not necessarily for the race pipe but to make sure mine was current and see if it would improve my mpg numbers. One thing is the bike is hot no matter what time I'm riding. At 7am this morning it was kicking off some heat. I thought the heat issue was also related to air temp. Not so says my right leg. | ||

Until you get it tuned you can wrap the headers. That'll cut the heat down a bit. I don't know if it'll make much of a difference, but maybe running it through the TPS reset process might help? | ||

Remember - the Buell race pipe is a dual outlet. You now have exhaust on the right side as well as the left. | ||

Either wrap the headers like Scotty suggested or get them ceramic coated. That seems to help out most everyone that has heat issues. Thank you for the review though because I think that is what I am looking for. Worried the Special Ops would be too loud and unreversible but the stock is too tame for me. Race pipe it may be | ||

haha... funny Froggy... Usually wear my kevlar-lined jeans or regular jeans (no comments please  ) when I'm commuting to work (5 miles each way, no freeway). Riding pants for longer distances. Never shorts if that's what you're thinking. (Message edited by 407guy on March 11, 2009) | ||

Yea choice of gear affects the heat you feel. I have always worn full gear, and it is next to never I feel the heat. If I don't wear my suit I am more likely to feel the heat, even then not much. Too many variables including your ergonomics and weather affect it. | ||

Thanks Itileman for the suggestion on the heat shield. I thought the pipes were starting to look a bit cooked. I'm trying to shift sooner and keep the bike at lower RPMs to see what happens with the heat and fuel mileage. | ||

07 up harleys also have the same heat issue... the race tuner gets rid of a lot of it.. for the life of me, i dont understand why harley has a race tuner and you have to have a license to buy one for a buell...or why buell has the ecm spy locked out on the new models, but harley doesnt... i would think the epa rules would be the same.. | ||

I wasn't even aware there was a Harley race tuner, I thought you were stuck with those crappy power commanders. ECMspy is not locked out of the newer models, it just never was updated to support them. There is workarounds for it. | ||

yep, harley sells a sceamin eagle race tuner... ive put one on all my harleys... you can change anything in the map or just download someone elses... harley even has a simple factory download for the stock ecm and different stages of mod, if you dont want to dyno tune with the race tuner.. a lot of people keep saying that the ecm spy works on the new models... several of the gurus here and American Sport Bike say it isnt compatible... i would never put a "powerslowmander" on any bike i own, as walking home sucks.. | ||

The solution for your problem is using ECM Spy and the compiled spreadsheet from OhioSportsbike.com. You can buy a Buell Race ECM for your bike but you have to be a licensed racer and have at least $450. The Ohio website has all the info on how to tune your Uly to work properly with a revised exhaust and improved intake if you have that too. Helps to have a dyno available to speed the process. I have the same pipe on my '08 XB12XT and it runs lean....not good. I will be buying dyno time to fix my stock ECM to work with the pipe and an open air box. | ||
