I always thought is would be neat if a fuel cell was made to replace the passenger portion of the ULY seat. It would probably end up an inch of two taller but would blend right into the bike if painted the same color as the front of the seat. It would also keep the weight low so as not to adversely affect handling.

Hootis,
That looks very nice! Will be interested to see how you mount it to the bike.

I have been working on a mount that pivots in the rear; remove front two bolts to allow access to the fuse box under the seat. Like your set up it will be just above the passenger seat.

I would love to have a custom fuel cell that replaces the rear seat area and will hold about 4 gal. If you ever make such a thing post up. I have not been able to justify the cost. I can't weld or would be tempted to build it myself.

Fly,
I don't have welding gear but I will speak to a friend of mine that is into motorcycle drag racing and hear what he has to say on the subject.

I post more pics when I get it back from the powder coater, assemble, and mount it.

It uses two bolts to hold it to the seat Yes I drilled two holes in my new $500 Russell seat).

I also welded a bracket to the tail section.

I have about $200 total in to it so far, should be under $250 total.

i'll let you know the first time I fill it, but it should be approx 6.18 gallons, +/- : )

I wanted the flat surface on the rear for luggage, or possible a Pelican case for my laptop.

Do you also have a aluminum rear fender extension to keep the mud & crap off the back of your bike?

Pretty much done now.

I need to put my vent line on.

There are two bolts run up thru the bottom of the seat into the bottom of the tank, and two pins with clips thru the bracket I welded to the tale section.

The whole thing, seat, and tank comes off in just a few minutes.

I dont know how to upload bigger pics, but if you want some shoot me an email.

Very nicely done. Question: Which will cause you to pull over first,
a) Need gas.
b) Potty break
c) Monkey butt

How is the comfort of that seat compared to the ULY tall?

WoW !! Wonder if the Uly now qualifies as a tanker and must have placarding ?? Hootis29 - You could refuel an entire squadron of Uly's with that. Would make my 8 gal 1150GSA buddy wince with envy. Cool! j

Hootis29-
You entered in the big show this August?
Sure looks like you have the best setup I've seen on a LDR uly to date. Your tank looks a lot like a Sportster from MN that ran very well this past IBR.
I like it. Would love to see a shot of how you mounted it to the seat.
You have large brass ones to drill a hole in the big $$$ seat.
Not sure I'm there.....yet.

Maybe : )

That Sporty belongs to my boss, so I guess I have a little advantage there.

I was drawn for the IBR, but for fiscal, employment, and marriage reasons I will not be riding.

In lieu of the IBR, and in preperation for the ALCAN, I am instead planning to head for Happy Valley Goose Bay the last week of August. Taking the ferry to Nova Scotia, and heading home. 9 days.

The seat is a new, and like my boots will need to be broken in, but so far it feels like a big improvement over my stock 06 "tall" seat.

I plan to break it in April when I bomb out to Oregon to see the Sruce Goose.

I like drilling holes in a new seat, and welding random brackets to my bike, it drives the Beemer guys nuts. : ) No offense Beemer guys.

fuel cell

My first install was to mount the tank to a happy trails rack. The CG is too far aft for my liking.

Hootis-I'm jealous. I'm not ready to run with the big dogs yet....did sit near Jim Owen at a post rally banquet. Was not on the podium though for sure. Wish my boss even understood let a lone has been there, done that.
