I did a search and found a couple of threads, but nothing that really jumped out at me. There was some talk about if the Buell toolkit was worth it. Somebody in another mentioned Blue Ridge Racing tools (they seem to be metric only, which is an issue on the Buell).

Since the Buell is a mixture of metric and imperial sizes, other than building your own tool kit, is there much of an option when it comes to tool kits?

Hi Wayne, here in europe we can buy a tool kit either metric or in inches, it's greta the box costs around 60$ it comes form germany i got it trough www.louis.de either than that the buell tool kit is quite ok for most stuff, basically the most used item is the Torx 27, the interesting about the buell tool kit is the piece to remove the spark plugs as it's a bit complicated if you don't have the right spanners.

I purchased a Craftsman motorcycle tool kit for M2nc. I think it was $80-$100. They came in metric and standard sets. We added a few items. It wraps up in it's own canvas pouch. The downside, it's heavy.

I had the list somewhere of what is in the buell kit. My plan is to put one together piece by piece. I plan on tapping flea mrkts.,yard sales and local hrdwr stores as needed.
The answers I got here lead me to believe the buell kit was not a high end set. I don't really think I can put together a "good" set for under a Franklin. So, I'll look for "good" pieces.

I basically took the Buell toolkit list, added a few things I thought might be convenient, bought a heavy-duty Cordura toiletry travel pouch and built my own with good quality, off-brand tools. I have everything I might need for roadside repair (save for a center stand)and it fits snuggly in the under-seat compartment. I no longer have the receipt for all that I bought, but is was significantly cheaper than the Buell took kit or any of the other pre-assembled kits on the market.

I guess I need to phrase this another way. Are there options other than the Buell toolkit for taking on the road with you. I tend to have all the tools I need when I'm at home. It's just some type of kit for the road. What got me to thinking about this was doing a service on my wife's BMW this weekend. I went to a tech day, decided people will have the tools, so I don't need to bring mine, just the bike and supplies. When I got there, there were some tools, but there were also 4 bikes including the one I brought being worked on. The person who owned the bike prior to us, purchased an upgraded BMW tool kit, and I had every tool (minus the feeler gauges, and oil filter wrench) to do a complete service on the bike.

I thought, you know if something would happen to me on the Buell when I'm out and about, I only have a few minor tools on the bike. I really like the Blue Ridge Racing kit that somebody mentioned. However, since it only comes in metric that's an issue and it does seem that Buell has put together a fairly nice set (although maybe a bit on the high side when it comes to price), for the road.

I bought the Buell tool kit. Good quality and you get correct mix of metric and inch tools plus the special bits that you would otherwise have to break out of a another set.

For $100.00 I think it's a good deal.

So, I'll answer my own post now... Picked up the Buell toolkit today. As Tneall said "For $100.00 I think it's a good deal"... I agree with this statement. Actually, I think it's better than the BMW kit that I did a complete service with that somebody had purchased and left in the bike my wife bought.

It definitely gets my stamp of approval.

Central Texas ordered it for me. I'll bring it on Thursday, if you're going to be at Opals.

So where is the Buell kit made? With the US economy in the state that it's in, I'm really trying to make an active effort to buy American.

The ratchet wrench looks like a Snap-On or the Craftsman that's made by Snap-On. It's probably all made in Taiwan or China or Vietnam.

+1. Worth is to save running around.

The only thing I added was an 8" length of fuel-line hose to facilitate spark plug changes.

Nuts,

They don't have the wobble socket for the rear spark plug. That tool is worth getting the Buell kit IMO.

So where is the Buell kit made?

Taiwan is stamped on several of the tools. That really doesn't surprise me. We don't have many US made tool factories left. The few that are around, tend to provide top notch tools, but also charge accordingly.

Does it fit under the seat?

It's suppose to, but it won't fit under my seat with the Stow and Go and intercom under my seat. I'm sure it would have no problems fitting if I took these out.

It fits under my seat. Not any room to spare, though. Had to kind of smash it down and push real hard to latch the seat.

I guess I'll go back to looking at piecing one together.

Here's part of what I carry when I'm traveling

Tool Roll

Both SAE and Metric Snap-On combination wrenches, regular and needle nose Vise Grips, a 4 in 1 screw driver, a Husky ratchet with an extension and a 5/8" spark plug socket.

I also carry allen wrenches, Torx L wrenches, 12" Crescent wrench, a Slime Tire Pump and a Camel Tire Plug kit, some safety wire, a couple of zip ties and a few assorted nuts and bolts.

I put together a tool set for my HD using Craftsman tools. I ended up including a bunch of stuff I don't even think I need. I was trying to save some money, but in hindsight I wish I had had just bought the HD or CruzTools set. If I buy a Buell, with their mixture I imagine I'll just get the Buell set and be done with it. I hate to admit it, but I'm not much of a mechanic. All I need is something to get me through the basic tasks.

It is hard to find the metric wrenches (made in the USA) at the flea market. I may have scored a 5/8" spark plug wrench with built in universal joint from my neighbor. He said he will have to look for it. If he can't find it, fleabay has them,I've got the torx 25,27,30,and 40 snapon sockets. Most of the tools are in my tool box already. I might make a roll out of an old pair of jeans, or old shop apron. I've spent $5.50 so far.

In going over and updating my home-made toolkit (and using it to change a belt to make sure I have it covered), I noticed I had put in a Torx T40.
I cannot recall what this is used for, and found nothing on the bike that size.

Can someone help me in what uses a T40?
thanks

There isn't a T40 in the Buell kit, so I'm not sure why you put one in your kit.

I'm not sure anymore either.
I just noticed a previous post mentioned having a T40 as well.

Not sure why I posted the previous post twice either, though, so it must be Monday...
