A week or so after purchasing my Ulysses, I bought the Buell deluxe tank bag. Recently I noticed my zipper was ripping away from the tank bag. I then started to be very careful about zipping it up around the area that it was coming apart. Then the other day, the closing mechanism came off the zipper itself.

Zipping up the bag has always been tough since they use a plastic flap to cover the zipper itself. But I really didn't expect in less than a year for the zipper to come apart. Anybody else ever have issues with the zipper on this bag?

I've only used mine one season but it's all together so far. I stuff it pretty full too and I've installed my StarCom in it.

I had a problem one. The zipper was a total pain. A little silicon grease on the zipper helped somewhat to keep it together.

Never had a zipper tear, but unfortunately the Buell tank bags are low quality. I have 3, two of them are the Deluxe.

I have two GREAT tank bags I don't use . . . there may be a market for them!

One of them has seen LOTS of states and is still like new. It's the one I used to use for testing and still has all my "secret weapons" (first aid kits and so forth) in it.

The zippers dont work well when clogged with dirt and road debri. I have to keep a lil WD40 in the small pouch to keep the big zipper lubbed up so it will not jam on me.... or I suppose I could quit riding off pavement.... Nah.

I have a deluxe that I use for long trips. I haven't had zipper issues, but once when I dropped the Uly in the woods in Georgia, one of the front straps pulled right out of the bag. I sewed it up with some fishing line and Goop, and it's been fine ever since.

I've got one that has seen a few miles on it, 5k or so, and I have to be careful when zipping it closed. If not it doesn't seal correctly.

Mine works great. But it did scuff up the air box cover a little.

My Deluxe served me well for over a year, then the zipper started screwing up at the lower left hand corner, soon after it pulled out of the material. It's garage junk right now...

My first tank bag, an Eclipse, lasted me for almost twenty years on three bikes.

Yep, same thing happened to mine. But I did hear of this happening before last year on this board, so I assumed you just got the luck of the draw.

Mine has over 40k and is plum wore out. I use it every ride. The zippers are wore out at the corners. I don't even try to make the zippers turn the corners any more. I have a tall shield with the mad stad brackets so most the time it's never zipped just flapped over. The air box cover may as well be a flat black now. This has been the most useful thing I have purchased for the ULY. I keep the bag on to keep the upward air flow off my chest and neck. I'd buy another but I'm to cheap and it still does what I need it to do.

BTW
It holds my small laptop great for the ECM tuning rides.

I've gone through three Buell tank bags in the last 3 1/2 years.

One regular and two deluxe bags.

The threading attaching the zipper came undone on the right rear corner on the first two bags.

On the last bag, threading came undone on right rear first. I had it sewn back on at a shoe shop. Then one month later it came undone on the left rear. A couple days after that the zipper itself became FUBARed.

At $140 a pop I can not afford to keep replacing tank bags.

I am sans tank bag now until summer when I can hopefully afford the Tourtech bag.

Of course with my luck with bags, the Tourtech will be just as weak in the zipper department.

Run your Chap Stik over it every once in a while and it keeps the zipped pulling smoothly,

My deluxe bag is 1 yr old with 11k miles. Use it all the time; commuting, road trips, light off-road duty. No problems so far.

+1 on the silicon grease or chap stick to keep the zippers working smoother. On cold days this helps a bit.

I have the original tank bag. The only issue I have is that the teeth sometimes don't engage. I'll get the slider halfway around and will notice that there is a gap.

It has always done it. I just assumed it was the way they were because of the small teeth used in the zipper.

I plan on buying the Wolfman Expedition Tank Bag on page 72 of the new Aerostich catalog. They are waterproof and zipper free.

Jeep dealers carry "zipper lube" for the Wrangler softtops. I use some on my Uly bag when I think of it, never had an issue with either the bag or the Jeep. And, both seem to be out in the worst weather and never get washed....hm. I've got pegasus decals on the Jeep, maybe I need Jeep decals on the Uly, lol.

Zippers let go & rectangular plastic gizmo on the map case bailed out somewhere between Dawson creek & Peace River. Not a well considered or constructed item. Ya gotta stand on the foot pegs and lean over 45* to see the damn map. It's slanted the wrong way...had the designer ever riden a motorcycle ?? Love the Uly, but -1 on the Buell tankbag.

Jphish, Your not tucked in enough. Lean in, get low enough for the stock shield to be useful and magically everything comes together. : )

Wayne:

I got a ton of information back from the head of the stitching and sewing group. I'm a little snowed at the moment but will sift through it and see what I can gather from it.

I must commend the folks at Buell for Lightning fast response with tons of detail.

I'll be in touch.

Court, first thank you for inquiring on this topic. Second, please keep us posted.

If Buell can find another manufacturer or increase the overall durability of the current manufacturer's bag I would be very willing to give the Buell bag a fourth try this coming summer.

I really like the overall design and look of the deluxe bag. I absolutely like having those adjustable dividers. It's only downfall is weak thread. The stitching seemed alright but the thread breaks under light to mild stress.
I'd think switching to a stronger thread would be an easy fix to an otherwise decent bag.

I have not responded to the Sew and Stich unit yet and would welcome any concise information I could get to pass on.

If you can SEND it to me in this format:

  • Subject = Buell Tank Bag
  • Model of Tank Bag
  • Buell Model
  • Your name
  • Your dealer
  • Approximate date of purchase
  • Usage Observations (such as "at 6 months old it started to . . . . )

I'll aggregate and let's see if we can lend our input to the continuous improvement process.

Thanks you guys and gals!
