Well, I put about 400 miles on my new 09 in 3 weeks here in Colorado. 40 degrees seems to be about my low temp since I don't have full heated gear (just grips) so I've been squeezing in the rides on weekends and nights after work when it's reasonable.

Lovin' the bike so far : ) Nothing but smiles and mind-clearing fun!

Looking for input...

I'd really like to replace both the front and rear signal lights. The fronts stick out too far and both front and rear are to "bulbous" for my tastes. Looking for compatible short-stemmed narrow but bright signals. Talking aesthetics here, that's all.

The stock mirrors shimmy-shake-blur to the point they don't help me when trying to determine whether I need to chill or not - of course while obeying the speed limit ; ) If I grab them to stop the vibes, they are fine. Any replacements that just don't vibe as much?

I'm 6'3". The stock windshield is too short, turbulence everywhere. Riding without the windshield brings the air into my chin and lifts my Hornet DS helmet which wears on me after a 2-3 hour ride. I would like to try the taller screen but don't want to burn the cash on it if it just brings the wind into the beak of my Hornet and continues to tug. Anyone else around 6'3" figured this out and have a setup that is working for them? Regardless, it's not a big issue. I'm a big guy, I'll go without if it means I have too strap on a big plexiglass kite shield!

I was gonna schedule a fitting test with Wolfman Luggage in Longmont. I'm looking to start with a tank bag and tail bag (not ready to spend the cash on the Buell cases just yet). Anyone have any experience with Wolfman fitting on a Uly? I'm a buy local/USA-made kind of guy unless, of course, it's crap, a rip-off, or just doesn't fit well.

Is the Buell toolkit the one to get or am I better off going general after-market piecewise tool purchasing?

Is there a website to order items like a shop manual or parts from? Or, do I have to visit a dealer?

500 mile service or wait for 1k like the manual says? What's the risk? Is the risk higher or lower given a cooler weather break-in?

-Mike

The stock mirrors are crap and useless, these are a TON better. http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/index. php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=16113&sid=e7phr926nrp 41zh4u2a0ds6gzx41l094

I have an XT with the factory tall windscreen and it's not good!!! Hits me in the exact wrong place and buffets like mad.... even worse 2 up. I'm 6'3 also and just ordered a set of these and they should be here next week so I will report back on that item.

Cool, the mirrors are on the list.

I'm looking forward to the windscreen report.

I could start by removing the spacers but, in general, I don't like the look of the signals. Thanks for the option though.

A fellow 6'3" man here...the Buell tall windshield works pretty well for me, but I do notice that my neck gets tired after about 100 miles of constant high-speed travel (55+ mph). I took a long weekend trip a couple months ago and it really started to bug me - I began to research the Palmer Brackets, but weighed the cost with how much it really "impacts" me. I think I'll be okay for now. Do a query on the "BAW" on this site and get a reality check for just how big a Uly windscreen can be!

Mirrors: hm, I DO wish I could have a better rear-view in general, especially when it comes to keeping an eye on what Johnny Law is doing on my 6, but I'm living with 'em. I'll eventually meet someone with a Tuono, or a Bueller with Tuono mirrors and see what the buzz (or lack thereof) is about.

My Buell toolkit stays under the seat except when adjusting the mirrors. It's nice, but I go to my toolbox for routine maintenance - Torx, non-metrics, etc.

I did the 500 mile at the dealer just to be safe, and to just get a good start with the bike. I want to keep the bike as long as possible, and I can do the general fluid maintenance, but I wanted a mechanic to make sure all the other pieces were squared away and locked down. I'll do all the fluid work going forward (I'm overdue for a 10,000 mile) - I want the mechanics to do all the bearing, tire, shocks, brakes, engine, tranny, etc. - someday I'll have a garage and not just a streetfront.

Welcome to the club! Glad to hear the experience is as good as most of ours...I'll be headed out in about 40-something tomorrow morning!

This is my wind shield cure!!

http://www.madstad.com/s.nl/sc.7/category.70/.f

It is a mount and flyscreen together. I have a stock and tall screen and tried them both. I stuck with the tall and angled it out a bit and perfect wind flow. If I'm doing a ton of slab riding I can change the angle and raise it for higher speeds. Lower it for the slow speed to let the wind flow by. Worth the extra money IMO for the metal flyscreen than just brackets from Palmer. My bike is black also so I didn't have a color issue with the fly screen.

I'm 6'4", and on my Uly (so far) I've found the best windshield solution is the Buell tall shield, with the lip cut off. I get a little more height, less bobble-head turbulence, and it's not as noisy as it was with the lip on it.

I'm also waiting for my CR mirrors to come in, so I can try them on the Uly (making room for aux lights where the front signals are now). Gonna take some work (or ditching the handguards, which I don't wanna do), but I'll keep the group posted. Another option is a set of V-Rod Muscle mirrors...but they have that damned bar&shield logo on 'em....

I have not tried this but have read that some folks swear by them. Might be worth some research especially for the price.

I second the Laminar Lip, but then I'm 5-9, so YMMV.

6' 4" and the tall w/scrn on Joules puts the wind right where I want it, on my face shield. The larger B.A.W.'s put too much touring look and buffeting on an otherwise smooth ride IMHO.

Laminar Lip for me too. Works great, better than the Buell Tall I sold which I hated.

I ran it for quite a while stuck directly to the flyscreen also, worked far better than the stock shield.

I'm 5'11" (and shrinking... ) but the Lip on the flyscreen simply cleans up the blast, stuck to the stock shield it smooths it out up to my face port.

I only have a couple months experience on 09, but here's what I've discovered so far.

1 - Mirror: I've had no problems with the stock mirrors. they're not the most attractive mirrors I've seen, but any time I need them; i.e. on the roar, at speed, I have no problem seeing what's behind or along side me.

2 - cases: I fitted the Touratech Zega side cases. Yes, they were pricey, but the convenience of a high capacity top loader was the only way to go for me. In time I will likely fit the Fehlen rear rack and either a happy trails or Caribou top case.

3 - Tool Kit:
a) make a check list based on the Buell tool kit

b) go to McGuckin's in Boulder, camping department

c) find a nylon "toiletry case". They carry one that, when full, fits perfectly under the seat of the Uly. I forget the brand, but there are only a few to choose from.

d) Saunter over the the hardware
department, get out your check list and find the tools you need. You have a wide range of price points to choose from.

e) put everything in the case, shake it a bit to get everything to settle in a nice flat shape and drop it in the under-seat compartment of your beautiful new bike.

4 - Wind Screen: I have the Zero Gravity tall touring screen, which is about the same height as the Uly tall screen. It just looks better in smoke gray. Unfortunately, I can't comment on how well it works. I'm still waiting on the mounting hardware. However, I inquired heavily about it before making the purchase and people my height (6'-2") love it.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

As far as a tool roll, I picked up one of these and then filled it with just the high quality tools I need for both my bikes. The quality is great, much better than Harleys tool roll. They have great bags also. They really are waterproof as tested by afternoon storms, everyday, in Colorado in August!!

Wolfman makes a tank bag called the Denali for the BMW F650 that also works for Buell XBs. The curve on the top of the airbox cover is very similar to the F650, but the Buell airbox cover slopes forward a bit, so the tank bag tilts a bit forward. No big deal. The wings on the tank pad clear the top air intake and fuel tank cap just fine.

I used two straps around the sub-frame rails in the rear. Very straight forward. On the front, the wings on the bag extend all the way to the leading edge of the airbox cover. So I wanted to wrap the straps around the leading edge. The Buell airbox (under the airbox cover) has some holes in it, so I just used a Dremel to cut some slots in the airbox next to the cutouts, leaving a nice bridge to run the straps around. I also used some lengths of Vacuum hose with slits cut in them to pad the airbox cover where the straps wrap around the edge.

Running with a big tank bag cuts way down on the updraft behind the Flyscreen/windshield.

Here's a picture on the bike:

"Any 5' 6" uly riders out there ? I'm hoping I won't even need a taller screen."

I'm 5'6" on an XT and find the tall screen most satisfactory. I'd say 90% of the time it is the perfect screen for me. Receive some buffeting on just the right(wrong) windy day and passing tractor trailers in crosswinds(the 10%). That said, rode for the better part of a month this summer with a nekked flyscreen due to a missing windscreen mounting screw (blue Loctite he whispers) and found screenless operation quite pleasurable as well. Maybe even better than screened in summer weather, but once fall hit I was glad to re-install the screen. Do you "need" the tall screen, I'm guessing no. But if you ride in the colder months having one to throw on is nice......

HVMP bar end weights are the bomb diggity. Smooths out even the stock mirrors. I had the KTM super duke mirrors which looked real cool but they were too small for me to see LEOs in.

+1 on the Laminar lip. I'm 5'11". Helps a ton. Though I'm thinking of some Palmer brackets with the laminar lip still on. Anybody tried this?

No, and no.

I exchanged E-mails with Eric and he said that although he had not fit any Ulys, he thought that the Explorer Lite or Large Expedition might work, but not the Explorer. He wasn't too sure about the Denali, but I chose it from the dimensions and images on the web on F650s.

A little trick i learned here, If you glue magnets to the under side of the air box cover, you can use a normal magnetic tank bag. It will confuse everyone at March Badness with your magic strapless voodoo bag : )

WHATS MARCH BADNESS???

It's like Sturgis for Buell owners.

Do yourself a favor and schedule some vacation time for the last weekend in march. Head to Suches, GA and you will have the best time on 2 wheels. They are already talking about next years event here. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/417206.html
If you go once you'll go again. great people and great area to ride. the great people make up for the crappy weather last year but riding did happen in the rain and fog.

I have the Wolfman Explorer Lite - works great for my needs.

Also have the Bags Connection tail bag and although I don't use it often - it works great too.
