P.E. Obama better get some of this "change" stuff started quick...my Uly is getting upset.

I've been hanging by a thread at work for months now, just waiting for the axe to fall. Georgia D.O.T. is in the crapper big time, so my company has cut staff by about 50% in my office.

Meanwhile, I'm afraid to spend money on "non-debilitating" problems for the Uly because the new wife and I only have a small savings to rely on if my job gets yanked.

The list is getting fairly long:

- New clutch cable (contacted header and melted through)
- New brake rotors, front AND BACK, both warped and pulsing badly
- New rear bearings, not shot yet but I'm concerned
- "popping" when fork compresses likely due to steering bearings, tried zip-ties on wiring under flyscreen, problem remains
-need to buy service manual
-primary chain needs adjustment
-clutch needs adjustment
-spark plugs and fork oil need replacing

None of these things are keeping me off the road (the uly being my daily transpo), but I hate neglecting my trusty steed.

Just needed to moan for a second.

P.S. Oil of some sort keeps collecting on my clutch cable housing, but I'll be damned if I can find where it's coming from. Maybe the inside of the melted cable housing? Any ideas?

I really doubt you have warped front and rear rotors.

Another member did the 1/4 mile with the rear brake on the whole way, 130mph run, the rotor was PURPLE after cooling and it did not warp.

More than likely you will only need pads, maybe a front hardware kit.

Steering head bearing adjustment takes 10 min. max!

Oil change on both ends with clutch cable and basket, and primary chain adjustments will only require about 30 min. time.

I am in loganville, with a manual and have been working on XB's since early 04. I have space and tools and could help you out.

The cable is leaking between the plastic outer housing and the metal crimped on end.
Clean it really good and put silicone on it.
Mine leaked on my '08, and was replaced under warranty.

I really doubt you have warped front and rear rotors.

My front rotor checks .006 run-out. I'd swear it was .060 by the pulsing. I've sanded/scotchbrited the rotor many times, tried Lyndall Golds, and Sunday switched to EBC HH pads. I prefer the feel of the EBCs, but it jackhammers pretty bad under hard braking, enough to see my ZG screen shake to the beat.

By front hardware kit, do you mean rotor bolts/spring hardware ?

-primary chain needs adjustment
-clutch needs adjustment

That's an easy 10 - 15 minute job -- can someone quote the SM for Fatty on this ?

Hang in there, Fatty. We're all pulling for you.

Primary chain is easy, and it is easier to do when the plugs are out. Fork oil is the hardest thing listed, and even that isn't that hard if you got the tools.

I just gotta say...you guys are f'ing awesome! I logged on this a.m. ready to take a few licks from lectures about "maintenance is cheaper than hospital bills" or "if you can't afford the maintenance you can't afford the machine", maybe even a few of these: But instead the responses I've gotten make me feel alot better about the situation. Thanks for that, everybody.

Sounds like pretty much all of the work the Uly needs is simpler than I thought . I got the bike about the same time that my company started to tailspin, so pretty much the whole time I've had it we've been on spending lockdown around the house. Sucks.

At least one PM is about to be on its way. Thanks for all the responses, folks!
