There's a lot of discussion out there around what oils to use and how often to change it, but I haven't seen a thread yet to deal with a problem I've recently experienced, a problem that seems like it should be fairly common. I'm riding a new 09 Uly with just over 700 miles on it and I've already detected some traces of water in my oil. I went for a ride today and gave the oil a quick check just before gassing up and there was a milky residue coating the inside of the filler cap. The oil itself seemed OK, but if there is such a residue already on the oil cap, I figure it's only a matter of time before the oil is contaminated. I live in Colorado and the temperatures are beginning to drop. During my commute I do make a stop for coffee and I may make one quick hop out for lunch, but otherwise all of my driving is long enough in a stretch to bring the motor up to full operating temperature and beyond. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

The Buell owners manual does recommend oil changes much more frequently for those who live in colder climates, but I think 700 miles is a little soon to start seeing something like this happen; especially considering I did change the oil once already at 200 miles.

Any ideas?

I live north of 53N - winter hasn't arrived yet. This morning it was -7C. I have found that the Uly likes to be ridden until warm in the best conditions, short trips cause that milky buildup on the filler cap.
Someone on this site suggested that blocking the oil cooler will help warm it up. I'm sure we should be extremely cautious using this mod.

The best thing you can do (other than more frequent changes) is make sure you ride it long enough to get it nice and warm and burn off the condensed water, IMO.

Your short trips are causing the condensation and milky oil. After a long ride do you still have the same problem? If the oil itself is not milky but there is some milky oil on the cap then you need to ride it off road a little and clean that crap off of there!! Seriously, if the oil is not milky and just a little on the cap I wouldn't worry about it.
