Hi boys and girls, I am new to this section of the web but have been a member for a few months. I have just bought a 2009 Uly X from Liberty Buell in Jersey. I am wondering what must do modifications I am looking at. I plan on riding it to Daytona to pit for a friend in march and then running west to california, then north to Alaska, then southeast to Nova Scotia, then home to Drty Jersey. Any advice would be appreciated.

The most important mod is to try and make the odometer roll over to 0 again! Get out there and ride! : )

I am wondering what must do modifications I am looking at.

After 34,000 miles on my '06 Uly, followed by 11,000 miles on my '08 XT, I'm wondering the same thing.
I'll just keep putting on miles until I figure it out.

I just got one too and am trying a handful of various ideas. No new ones.

  • The stock LIGHTS be augmented. I'm sure they meet federal requirements, but 20MPH is it without overdriving them. I've found no need to go crazy and to date have just upgraded the bulbs (cheap and less than 8 minutes) and added PIAA 510.
  • The HORN - again it's a strictly personal thing as I do most my riding in New York City. My small investment in a Strebel Airhorn was rewarded yesterday watching a "boyz in the hood" dude, walking against the light in Harlem, leap 2' in the air.
  • LUGGAGE - The Buell Outdoorsman luggage is spectacular. Someone did good on this stuff.
  • GPS - I've opted for the Garmin Zumo, a truly amazing piece of technology.
  • VOLTAGE MONITOR - No strictly necessary, but another cheap and easy piece that lets me know, with certainty, how to manage my electrical resources.

The great news is that if you do nothing you are going to thoroughly enjoy it. I've ridden LOTS of Buells over the past 20+ year of Buellin' and this is looking like the best motorcycle (any brand) I have ever owned.

I'm close to Liberty here in New York City. If you have any questions, drop me a note.

The headlights are dismal, until you simply re-aim them a bit higher. Then they aren't half bad.

+1 on the Fatty Voltage Monitor Mod. Other mods may be nice, but that one is mandatory.

The Volt meter mod saved me from impending doom! Also nice to see that I got too much crap running for idle : )

Yep, there are lots of threads on this site that will give you all the mod discussions you'd ever want to read.

I'd agree with the above, especially with the HORN. I LOVE my Stebel Nautilus Compact air horn...I hesitate to say this, but I treat the Stebel (or any superloud, super-original horn sound) kind of like a gun - I only use it when I REALLY mean it. Holy crap, that sounded weird. I don't actually own any guns.

But you get the idea...it'll make a gangbanger jump out of his shorts in NYC. On Washington DC's Beltway, imagine what it'll do to the half-asleep, routine-induced, cell-technology-enabled, world-unaware, fully-clueless Sockey Moms and Maserati lawyers. You can only flinch so far in your car as you drift into my lane before you bash your head on the roof of your car and fumble your Blackberry out the driver-side window. It's highly amusing, especially as you watch it happen (since you're always looking out for fools like that).

Anyway, I love my newly-installed Buell heated grips on my '06, and will be using them a lot this winter. The stock H&B bags are gargantuan - I haven't had any problems with the seals or the latches, but I know others have. Treat the latches carefully.

I'm looking at Motolights.com for additional visibility and lights - I do find that the Uly headlight is not quite as bright as my H-D, with its big single headlight.

I would love a Zumo, but I wouldn't get the most of it with the riding I do. Sounds like you would. I do a little bit of exploring on back roads, when it would come in handy, but only now and then. I don't mind getting lost, as long as I have enough gas.

Welcome, enjoy, and ride safe!

GAS, OIL, TIRES

Repeat as often as possible. Try and buy GAS in a different state every time! Come home only when you need tires or oil. Go back out and get more gas.

Ok, the horn I already have, it's the Nautilus. I bought it for my 05 12R but didn't have a good place to mount it. I have put the Uly heated grips on my bolt but find my palms very hot and back of hand cold. I think I'll be trying heated gloves this year. How about tires ? I have been told that the stockers suck but have not been given any substitute tires. The HID lighting seems like it may be worth my while as I plan on being in the middle of no-where as often as I can. I was gonna bring it home and rip it apart to put 9 pistons in it as well as an exhaust and air filter. Then it was back to Liberty to have moose hook me up with one of those direct link things....any opinions ?

The 06's have Dunflops, they suck. The Pirelli's on all the later years rock : )

Some crazy people put on tires those weird tires that share a name with a lotion company. I might try them next time I'm due.

Congrats, the Buell guys at Liberty in Rahway are great. Yes re-aim the headlights it makes a big difference. Don't change a lot until you get a couple of thousand miles on it. Beware of exhaust mods..they can lead to more trouble than its worth...fuel mapping etc....I don't think you get that much HP and the extra noise is irritating to me.
Get the shop manual .... it's excellent.

Id agree about the exhaust. Why folks do exhaust mods is often entertaining.

I, down to 221# from 243# at Homecoming, likely tip the scales at about #250 in full riding gear and the Ulysses will, with nothing but smooth throttle application, loft the front wheel skyward. Exhaust mods are largely for entertainment and I, it's a personal choice, avoid them to allow me to start my bike at 4:30am on Sunday without getting shot at.

I'm off to spend a day riding today and, this time of the year, I'd do nothing with the Ulysses but ride!

The shop manual and parts manual are a must. Liberty has them or can get them quickly.

The only mods to my 06 Uly so far:

Voltage monitor
Heated suit connector (I use the gloves with the jacket; much prefer the gloves to grips for finger-backside-heat as opposed to hot-palm-heat)
Re-aimed headlights up about 5 degrees
Top and side cases (usually run top only), with silver panels painted to match the barricade orange bike
Drummer muffler - most of my riding is on DC/Baltimore area roads, dominated by cell phones and ignorance. If I can drown out their phone conversations, they *have* to look around and see who's being so *rude* as to interrupt. LOL. I also like the sound...but kept my stocker, "just in case".

As noted above:
Ride
Grin
Repeat

: )

I actually like the stock Dunlop tires. I like the Pirellis too but they wear out too fast for me.

Maybe we can start up a support group or something that would help all of those suffering as XL1200R did and I am now. Maybe we could wear green ribbons to show our support for sufferers like me. I know that I would feel all sorts of warm and fuzzy if I saw someone wearing a green ribbon. We could also sell green rubber bracelets and have all the procedes go to bribing Eric or who ever we have to to speed things up. I'll have to get moving on this right away.
