Here goes nothing!

I'm doing a track day tomorrow for the first time on the Uly. My father-in-law will join me on his 2002 Ducati Monster.

I haven't been on a track in two years, so there will be some warming up going on. I've done a few days on previous bikes (SV 650 and FZ1). The Buell should prove to be a very different experience, I think.

We'll be at BIR (Brainerd International Raceway) with its nearly one mile long straight!!!

Any Ulysses specific track advice out there? The bike is a 2006, stock, with Scorpion Synch's. I am stoked!

My only advice is to be safe and have fun!

I did my 1st ever track day early this year on my '06 Uly and I'm hooked, but now ride a Daytona675 at the track and have done 4 more events. The Uly got a lot of attention in the garage between track sessions so did the 64 year old "kid" in the saddle.

Enjoy your day.... wish I were there!

You'll have a blast. I've done two track days on the Uly. It's like a big motard with a few extra ponies.

Set your suspension as per the manual for your weight and tweak the compression/rebound as needed to control front dive and rear squat and have a great time. We take our Ulys to the track regularly as well as a TT. Not unusual to get hooked. I'm building an '05 XB for track only use.

The weather looks to be sunny, cool in the morning, and topping out in the upper 70's in the afternoon. Perfect!

Safety is a big concern when I ride, especially on the track. The "everyone else out there with you" variable is the one that always makes me a bit nervous.

uly +Track=: ) you can have a blast embarrassing sport bikes but that 1 mile straight will give them the chance to catch you

I've done a few track days on my Uly.

Had a lot of fun. But the thought of wadding up my beautiful Uly prompted me to get a "track ho" bike. One that's cheap and if I wad it up, I won't shed too many tears.

Did that for two days with the 1125R , that corkscrew turn @ 8 & 8a is an E ticket Ride. I lost my stomach the first time through it. Note to self, follow road, not horizon :P

I had a great day at BIR. Early wake up, but enough coffee to overcome everything.

My father-in-laws Ducati Monster wouldn't start, but I convinced him to load it and bring it along anyways. Once at the track, I found some shop people I knew and begged for their help with his bike. After one half hour, they prevailed and found the culprit - one of two relays were bad. Swapped and it started right up.

The Uly did fine and was a lot of fun. It topped out around 120 on the long straight (4700 feet approx). Cornering was as you know easier than it should be.

I ran the Scorpions at 30 psi and they never misbehaved. I didn't push corner speed too much, which was fine. I spent more time working on corner entry without braking and just trying to be as smooth as possible. It is easier when you go with the slow group!

We also got to run the brand new configuration at BIR for a few laps. The long straight will be gone, the track less than 3 miles long and several (4 or 5 I think) more turns in place.

I might just have to go back on September 18th and run the shorter and more exciting track layout.

Out of sheer curiosity, are you not allowed to run the factory hard saddle bags with Inside pass/sportbike track time/private track time?

Rubysdaddy,
I think you'll find that the Uly is a very-very capable motorcycle; I know I did. It's a Buell, so it does handle very well provided that the suspension is set up for you per the owner's manual instructions.
The thing that really surprised me was how well the Pirelli Scorpion Synchs stuck to the road!!! I was hanging in there with full sport bikes on sticky rubber... and often times leaving them. Of course, it's the rider not the bike; however, the bike can make things easier for the rider.
The Uly is great! If your scraping anything on the bike, then you fell over! The ground clearance is for days.
Tomorrow, we're going back and I'll report on how the Pirelli Diablo Rossos did that I just put on my Uly. I very well may report how they stick in the rain given the forecast.

Umm, no, I ground over a 1/4 inch off the footpegs of my Uly at Barber...

Take a book for those straights...

But be prepared to piss off a lot of people passing them on those corners.

Enjoy. I've yet to match New12r on the Uly - only half way through the hero-blobs.

The Uly will keep on leaning....I swear it.

Barker has a pic of them I think. My old CPU crashed and I need to get the hard drive out, that is where all my good pics are!

New12r,
Ok, but I was merely making a point, not saying that it's an impossibility. I'd like to see a picture of you scraping the pegs myself, so if you can load them, please do!

The Uly is a great handling bike. You don't need to be on the track to enjoy it. Here is my 06 Uly's footpeg and rear tire. My Uly has never been on the track. : )

Geopatr I have hit some hard roads and corners and that is impressive. I have been trying to drag a peg on this bike for a while and it is difficult.

I've cut some fast lap times on my Uly on the track, and only managed to drag the peg a couple of times. On both those occasions, it was because my body was out of position.

In the first picture I posted, my body position is good. Butt cheek off the seat, head forward, down, and to the inside. In the second picture, my body position is sadly wrong. I've got my butt off the seat, but my upper body is "counter leaning" causing me to have to lean the bike more than necessary to negotiate the corner at a given speed.

The more upright you can keep the bike, the more meat of the tire you have on the ground and the faster you can transition from one direction to another.
