I was recently on a charity ride and as per my luck as late it rained for much of the 250 KM (did I mention my rain suit was at home?). My side bags were empty. When I went to put some things in the side bags a few days later they BOTH had water in them. Now I'm not talking a drop or two, I mean a CUP or two sloshing around. If anything had been in the bags it would have been soaked. Anyone else had this problem? I mentioned it to my dealer when I was there the other day and they are going to have a look. I suspect with the single lock on the case it is not providing enough pressure to make a good seal all around. I would assume the bottom seals good or the water would have run out. I wonder if the new cases with the double locks would be better? | ||

Yes one of mine leaks too but not as bad. My dealer said this is happening quite a lot with the rubber seals and there might be a recall. | ||

Both of my side cases will leak even under 'low-pressure' circumstances. I suspected this when I took delivery as both of them had water inside - presumably from when the dealer washed the bike just prior to me arriving to pick it up. I repeated the experiment using very low-pressure water and had similar results. The top case is fine, though I suspect that has more to do with the lip overlap than the rubber seals actually being any better. I'm thinking about making my own seals for them, but more likely I'll just pack everything in a garbage bag inside the cases when I go on a longer trip. I used to do the same thing for the soft bags on my Firebolt. -=shrugs=- | ||

I have the same issue with mine. Ironically, prior to owning the Ulysses, I put the HB bags on my wife's BMW. The same bag (minus the Buell logo), on her bike doesn't leak. However, my Uly bags do leak. Wayne | ||

As a bit of an aside - has anyone removed the rubber seals from their Uly bags? I've got a bunch of caulk backer that I was thinking would actually make a pretty damned good seal, but I don't want to tear the originals out unless they'll 'lift' out (not glued in). | ||

Only time mine "leaked" was when they got almost completely submerged in a river. They held the water in nice and good, as when i opened the case it all dumped out like some kind of cartoon. | ||

I feel fortunate as last weekend on a trip to da UP of Michigan, I got dumped-on huge for about 20 minutes (as in gulley washer...). When putting back my rainsuit was pleased to see no water of any sort in either of my Buell bags (but the shoes I was wearing were super soggy due to lack of rain covers). By the way, I can happily recommend BMW's one piece rainsuits..... | ||

I just replaced my original bags (slightly scraped up) with some new ones I picked off the classifieds here. Funny thing, my original ones never leaked a drop in over a year of riding in some very adverse weather. My new ones leaked in a similar manner (about a cup) during an overnight camping trip/rainstorm while the bags were emptied into the tent... about a cup during a very intense rainstorm. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/385720.html?1219370308 Maybe it is just a recent model issue with the seals... ? | ||

My right side bag does not leak at all. No matter what. My left hand bag, a mist could come by and I would have 2 cup fulls in there. Seals look the same, all nice and seated. One side leaks, one side does not. Clothes right, gear left.  | ||

Ours don't leak but we are careful to make sure the gasket is in place when closing them. | ||

And I've noticed that the fuller you fill the bags, the more the lid is pressed outward, which probably compromises the seal. This thread tells me to bring garbage bags in case of rain, just in case (no pun intended). | ||

The bags on my '06 Uly didn't leak a bit. The left bag on my XT is just like Fastmag's. I'd probably have a pint of water in it if I rode through a heavy fog. | ||

Same here. Top case is bone dry as is the right-side bag. The left holds about a cup of water in the bottom after any significant rain, though. Hepco & Buell both claim these bags are absolutely waterproof, so I'll be going back to the dealer next week and ask for some kind of remedy. | ||

I may have found my leak. Mine both leak a small amount and then retain the water inside. At first, I thought that the top seal was letting it in but now, I'm thinking that it's getting in from the open rivets that hold the strappy things. You know those straps that keep the lid from flapping all the way down when they are mounted on the bike? | ||

Submerge the bags and look for the air bubbles. That's how I fixed my bicycle tire tubes when I was a kid. You'll need to seal up the mounting holes first of course. | ||

I think you would need to leave them on the bike to have enough weight to submerge them. I'll let my dealer deal with it | ||

You don't have to submerge the entire bag at the same time. Just some of the bag will work. Then move it around. Good luck with the dealership though. | ||

It's not like a mounted tire to a rim, methinks. The Journeys are not as good a product as their price would suggest. Mine have always leaked, even after I seated the seals that the factory worker didn't. The seals fold up on themselves at the bottom corners, after a ride in dirty rain that's where I see the grit buildup so I assume that's where the water gets in. We all know about the lid latches, both of mine broke under warranty and I'll admit that the replacements have done fine so far, maybe because I've been extremely careful when closing them since. The "strappy things" and the way they are attached is cheap. They broke away couple days ago on my left case when a 30-pack rolled out of the case when I turned to grab my runaway shopping cart. My fault, but I got the opportunity to replace them with something better. i think leaking bags are just one of those things that we as buell riders get to deal with. I would add ANYBODY with Journeys, not just Buellers. I just deal with them, they don't spoil the ride IMHO. | ||

Not that it's directly related, but straight out of the crate, the lid on my XT's right-side bag was so badly warped that it wouldn't shut correctly. There's no way the dealer couldn't have seen this during PDI but it wasn't until I got the bike home that I caught it. Compared to the factory bags on some of my other bikes (RT, ST1300), I am so not impressed with the HBs. | ||

Was that corrected? Yes - no problems there. The dealer replaced the bag under warranty. | ||
