Yeah Ya'll. I have a customer that has a broken belt (2007 ULY) He is a commuter with the bike, and the shop is saying that it is NOT in STOCK, and on BACK ORDER. Anybody got a line on one? Chime in or drop me a note. We are not looking for charity here, we are paying for the belt; just trying to find one. Sponsors are next stop. Thanks gang.

What's up with the belt back order? Is it related to the change over to the 4th generation XB belt? Maybe the 4th time will be the charm and, belt failures will become less common. Chain maintenance is starting to sound less inconvenient!

If you ride the bike off road (and a few of us do ; ) ) your belt life is dramatically decreased. I now preemptively change mine every 8k. It is getting done next week. After seeing our riders loose them all around the 9-10k range (those riding off road) I started to recommend the 8k change and buying a spare. some listened, some didnt, and now I cant get a replacement for a while. : |

I don't ride off road although I do some unpaved gravel roads. Do you know anything details about the new belt? At least they are easy to change.

Last I heard, the new belts would be available on the 24th of August (although at one time it was the 21st of July....). If the dealer contacts their H-D SPOC person, rumor has it that they can expedite access to a drive belt. Would be interested to know if that works. Good luck.

This kind of stuff make me laugh so hard...I broke mine last month and called all over the country to find one. F'in Harley, and Erik Buell...I can drive 10 minutes in any direction and have my pick of 60 different t-shirts from any dealer but can't get a part when I need it.
My old kawasaki I could always get parts for, oh wait... it didn't break nearly as much as my buell does.

After 3 drive belt failures on my '06, I keep a spare on hand.

On long trips I have to set aside room in my luggage for it so I'm not stranded somewhere.

I wish I could offer mine to you City, but I'll be making room for it in my luggage this weekend.

Buell's belt drive: the achilles heel of the Ulysses.

I always read that the belt lasts a lifetime, even on buell.com right now under the XB12X and Features.

If it's been proven it never lasts a lifetime, then since they keep saying year after year that they do last, they need to give everyone new belts as preventive maintenance and replace them for the life of the motorcycle, not just the 2 year warranty.

It has been explained before...

"Lifetime Belt" simply means that the belt won't "wear" per mile in the classic sense like a chain. Look at the normal service intervals for a chain driven bike, and they will (or should) include "replace chain and sprockets" as a normal schedule maintenance event. If your dealer is doing the factory recommended standard maintenance, they will simply inspect the belt for damage (which may result in the need to replace it).

The belt drive on the Buell won't be "worn out" after X number of miles. That's not to say it will never break, just that it's not pretty much guaranteed to break at above X miles.

I have 55k miles on buells, and never replaced a belt. I have 15k miles on chain drive bikes, and replaced one due to wear, and had another break. The only time I ever had to call for a pickup truck on a bike >: (

I have a spare belt for my 9sx hanging on the garage wall, and will pack it in the bottom of the tub for a track day or road trip (if I am trailering). If I am riding, its located right where somebody can find it and bring it to me if I break one. It'll not doubt happen sooner or later, but I am happy to not have to spend $150 every 10k miles to avoid it. FWIW, it was a pull from somebody doing a chain conversion, so it was probably mishandled, and it was packed a bit on the tight side when shipped, but it was only $50. The perfect hot spare.

I had a chain on my KLR grind a pretty good divot in a chunk of limestone wedged up in the front sprocket, which no doubt damaged my chain. Good thing it was a cheapo-non o-ring job.

The "nutshell" way to look at it is:

On my chain drive bike, the chain can wear out or be damaged. On my Buell, my belt won't wear out, but it can be damaged.

Thats a good point Steve. If my current "hot spare" belt (stock pull from an 05 XB9SX) will help put somebody back on the road while waiting for the backorder, shoot me an email ASAP.

Put it on, use it until the newer better belt shows up, and ship it back.

This board is great, Thanks for the response guys. I WORK at a dealer, so the SPOC line is of no help, we already worked that angle. Was really looking for someone that had it already in stock, in the garage, or in the tankbag (where a handy spare is well... duh handy)

my service manual says it and the pulley need changed at 25k service interval. Page 1-7 second line from the bottom of the page. 06 lightning service manual.

That's interesting, when I spoke to H-D Buell customer service, I was told that if a rider was down due to a broken belt, the process could be expedited via the Dealer and their corresponding SPOC rep. Guess it will really pay to have a spare for my Uly when it ever shows up from Chicago H-D....

City - if you can't locate one I have one down in Chehalis in my topcase stored in my friends garage. New - It's my spare. Leaving for trip to Death Valley on Sept 10 - would need to have guaranteed replacement by then. Otherwise I'm willing to send it your way. Every Buell dealer should be required to stock at least 1 belt & set of wheel bearings. $200 worth of real parts instead of $200 teddybears with leather vests. WTF! Time to ask Al @ American Sport Bike to be our emergency parts house. j

Jphish, the problem is that even the dealers that normally have one in stock are out. I was going to order a belt for my 30k tire change, but am waiting for everyone else to get theirs as I don't need one yet.

rumor is that there is a new parts tracking system, that will track sales that are lost because you dont have the item on hand.... I am a master at ten key, I think I can pump the orders up to get a standing stock room. Eventually they will get the idea that we NEED certain stuff on hand; and when stock is out/low it gets reordered prior to "um yeah were out."
(they swear that the dont know what we need since that cant track what we dont have, dont sell ) ugh.
Like I said, I have been recommending spares, esp those that ride off road, and that are approaching the 8-9k mark.

If belts don't wear then why is a belt more likely to fail as millage increases? It would seem by your logic there would be no reason to replace it before it breaks. Is that what you are saying?

Are there signs of wear to look for in a belt with 10k miles? I'm leaving for my annual trip in a week and don't need the hassle of a broken belt.

I guess the most obvious thing to look for is cracks; you'll have to remove at least one of the belt guards to inspect. From what I've read, some folks have put thousands of miles on belts with cracks, so that may not be a good indication. My belt had significant cracks between the teeth at ~8000 miles so I replaced it and kept it as a spare.

A couple of people here have also reported that their belts seemed to stretch significantly just before breaking. You can check this by pushing up on the bottom of the belt between the rear sprocket and the idler sprocket. The belt should normally be pretty tight here. That's an easy to check to do before going on a ride and it might save you from breaking a belt in the middle of nowhere.

So I posted a thread with out looking at this one....Here's what I had to say. And then this post goes ahead and answers all my questions.

So the dealer has fixed the clutch cable that snapped under warranty. Now the bike has been sitting on the rack for well over a week waiting for a belt to come in (over two weeks actually).

Anyone else tried to order a belt in the last few weeks and had an issue? I wonder if this is the new belt and it's not suffficently in the supply line yet.

Oh well... Guess I don't get to ride my Uly for another week. THe only good thing is now I have time for a front brake rebuild on my track bike and I get to ride my wife's Ninjette 250 around. Which I look completely silly riding.

So I have my answer. If I have to wait until the 24th, that's pretty crazy. Just my bad luck I guess.
