Wow, I was so scared and nervous that it reminded me of the first time for something else, just did an oil change and primary fluid. I did the oil change once before, so it was nothing special. I had to figure out how to do the transmission fluid. Now either I am retarded or blind, as I couldn’t find the procedure for it in my service manual (06 Lightning models). I found on one of the pages about the drain plug so I drained it, and even popped off the 2 covers.

I figured this is when you adjust the primary chain, so I read the directions for that. I got no clue how you measure the damn thing, it’s to freaking hot. Anyway using a rag I pushed up and down on it, it looked a bit loose. I was having issues lately getting stuck in neutral while up shifting out of first. So I found the big ass bolt on the bottom, gave that a tug to tighten the chain a bit. Again I couldn’t measure, but it is tighter now.
My next issue, and the part that took me the longest, How the hell do put the fluid back in? I searched bad web for a bit from my blackberry, but still didn’t find the answer. I ended up carefully tilting the bike over and leaning it against a pole. I closed up the bigger window with the 3 screws, and then I carefully poured a whole quart of the primary fluid into the smaller window.

Did I screw this up as bad as I think? It shifts great now, and seems to vibrate a bit less. Overall I am very happy, and despite my uncertainties I got this great feeling of accomplishment. Now if only I can figure out how to do the forks...

Froggy,
I think you're OK which is a testament to the motor's ease of maintenance. I just did my '06 Uly at 11K+ miles. The fluid check procedure is in both the service manual and Owner's Manual. You're supposed to rotate the primary chain and measure the up-down slack at various points. The recommended slack is about 3/8" (hot and cold are slightly different). I measured it at one point, thought it was a bit loose, and snugged it a bit with the big ass bolt. I filled through the big window (clutch inspection) because the correct fluid level is eyeballed at the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring (that big toothy disc) with the bike upright and level. Your one quart is probably exactly correct. I use a funnel with a length of flexy hose fitted on the end and fill through the big window.

My bike was also a little balky on finding neutral prior to this but is now much better. I haven't done the forks yet (yah I know 10K is long gone) but I figure that's a good winter project.

I use a long necked funnel to get it on. I put in just shy of a quart to get tho the bottom of the clutch hole.

Bobmcc - Upright and level ? I thought the crankcase & transmission levels were checked on the stand and tilted ? j

IIRC, the crankcase is while on the sidestand, but the primary is upright and level.

Ok cool, dosent sound like i screwed up too bad. I couldn't figure out what it meant by rotate the engine. I tried to put it in gear and roll it, but only was able to move the chain a tad. I will try and carefully check everything over again.

I change the primary fluid every time I change oil. I did the same on my Sporty prior to the Uly. Rotating the engine was so much easier on the Sporty. What they want is for you to take the plugs out, put in 4th or 5th gear with the rear wheel off the ground and turn the rear wheel while in gear by hand. This will turn your primary chain and you can find the tightest point in the chain , adjustments should be made at that point. Since it is a PITA to get the plugs out on the Uly I check at what ever spot it lands on. . Works fine. Fluid level is easy 1 Qt out 1 Qt in. Long transmission funnel for a car works best to get it in the little opening.
