I stopped wearing a flip helmet because I got concerned about face protection from the Nolan.

Picked up an HJC AC-12 Axis. Nothing cheap about it. Snell rated. Fits extremely well, and well ventilated (we'll see how I like it in the coming months... ; ). Best $139 I ever spent, from Competition Accessories (they bought out their distributor at year end).

The clear shield was slightly scratched (probably from the factory), so CompAcc sent me a new one gratis. That is Buell-level CS!

Shoei RF1000 highly regarded by the SNELL lab. I sent a track crash RF1000 in and SNELL commended me for the choice of helmet. I just purchased a Shoei DS Hornet Matte Black its a multi purpose lid for a multi purpose ULY! K

I went whole-hog and went for the Arai RX-7 Corsair. I walked into my local pub with it and 2 rider friends immediately started making comments about "Well here comes Mr. Moneybags!" I don't know - after hitting a deer this year, I decided I wanted to get one of the best. I then realized that my old HJC CL-15 (my first helmet) was really too big for me, and too big to be loaning to my girlfriend. I got her the new version of the CL-15 which is a pretty quality helmet for a good price.

The Arai fits very well - has quick-drying interior, and fairly good venting, including two defogging vents in the screen (which is why a replacement or tinted screen costs as much as a couple steaks at Morton's!). Silver, for maximum reflectiveness...

You may as well ask what brand of underwear.

These threads never cease to amaze me. There is no best.

I agree with Danger and like I said earlier go to the store and try it on.

I would be leary of ordering anything this important from ebay or an dubious internet supplier, yes there are some good ones out there.

"Well here comes Mr. Moneybags!"

Beats the hell out . . "Boy do I miss Mr. Frugal".

There are a host of excellent helmets but if you want to save money buy cheap condoms and get the cheapest sex you can in Hunter's Point . . .

Ha ha...

I could have saved about $50 by buying that Arai online, but I bought it at my local H-D dealer, where I tried it on and got personal help on. When they told me the price, I audibly freaked out, and the guy immediately told the cashier to take an additional 15% off. Yow! The dealers are very wary about posting their prices on hot items like these until you're ready to pull the trigger on one.

Plus, they are desperate to keep "us" from shopping online versus coming into the store with real salespeople.

I've read online reviews of people shredding my Tour-X.

They said it's drafty, noisy and aerodymanically challenged at high speeds compared to other top shelf units.

They are right. But it's still my favourite helmet at the moment because I just think it's waaaay cool.

That's the sort of objectivity yer gunna get.

:-)

i'm considering a new full helmet. I normally wear a half helmet from riding the HD. What is the best full helmet for quietness?

Sez 'DineAlone'... : D
Still like my cheap helmet. Which is Snell BTW, works great, and better in protection and comfort than the helmet it replaced that cost almost well over 2X as much.

Nanner nanner.

Red you don't get it.......YOUR helmet works for YOU, YOU are happy with it, It fits YOU, It fit YOUR budget, It fits YOUR riding style, Most importantly YOU are wearing it.

A helmet on the head beat one on the shelf or in the garage every time.

Helmets are a personal choice and fit. I will for ever preach try it on and wear it for a long time before you buy it. It has got to fit you comfortably.

I have used several helmets during the past 12 yrs of motorcycling. Worn the RF800, RF1000, Aria signet, Aria quantum E, Nolan flip up #?, Jarrow flip up, and a $100 HJC. Like others have said, the helmet that fits your cranium best is the one that will be the most comfortable and probably the most quiet. I have a long oval shape but I can work with any of the Aria's. They have superb comfort but some work better than others. Shoei's just didn't fit my cranium well. I love their shields and release mechanism and wish I they fit. On faired motorcycles almost any helmet will work as far as noise so comfort is the major factor. On a naked Buell however helmet aerodynamics and noise level are both big factor. I loved my HJC but in the open air it had too much drag. So did my Jarrow. Pressure developed on the forehead at speeds over 70 & created some neck strain. Will save them for my touring bike. Not so with my Quantum E. It was my oldest most comfortable helmet. Quiet and narrow in profile so it had minimum neck strain at speed. It was 10 yrs old though and falling apart so I looked for a new one. Tried the RF1000. Wanted to love it but just didn't fit my cranium well. It was quiet with the neck dam in place but without it, there was more noise than I like and I always wear earplugs. Vents whistled a bit when not facing straight ahead. Went back to Arai despite the expense. Tried the profile this time as it is built for a cranium that is long oval. What a difference. VERY quiet even without the pull down chin dam and flowed great air without noise. The chin bar has more room than my Quantum and much more than the Shoei. HAvn't felt the need to use the vents in the Texas heat yet. Iridium visor plus great air flow under the chin make it cool wearing. By far the quietest helmet I have ever used. Even went for a ride without earplugs. Something I have NEVER been able to do with ANY helmet even on a faired bike with windshield fully deployed. Just too much noise. Not with the profile. So if you have a long oval mellon and ride a naked XB, the profile is awesome. Costs some change but buy the white and you sill save some cash and have a great fitting cool helmet that will be visable from a mile away. Get a smoked or iridium shield and you can regain some "cool" factor. Just my .02

Picked up a Arai sz-m for back road touring, very comfortable and aerodynamic. It will be hard to go back to a full-face. Plus you don't have to take it off when you stop to eat a pilfered apple......

I DO get it. I DO understand each head is different. My point, though, was that inexpensive need not mean 'cheap'.

Besides, HJC makes a lot of other brands' helmets. You might be using one!
LOL

I am sold on Shark helmets, after having two of them destroyed in two separate accidents within the last two years (the last on 5/16/08 when I highsided on the Pa Turnpike due to "uneven pavement"). The Uly really held up well considering it slid down the T-pike at about 60mph. The miracle is that I did not get run over as I slid down the pike also!
Without a doubt the Shark helmet saved my life on both occasions, and I did not even get a headache, although I did almost die from other injuries the first time-but not a head injury! Walked away with a separated shoulder and a broken rib the second time around-hurray for full gear all the time.
I went with the Shark brand after reading that helmet article in Motorcyclist magazine a few years ago and decided that the European safety requirements made more sense than Snell did.

Pabuell: I totally agree on the Euro standards. ECE 22.05 is good enough for Moto-GP and that's good enough for me. That's why I've never hesitated to wear import helmets that *ahem* may not have been certified for use here in the US. No DOT sticker? I can remedy that regulatory omission in thirty seconds with my Brother P-Touch sufficiently to avoid undue LEO scrutiny on the road.

Some helmets are better than others, but most helmets from reputable manufacturers are pretty darned good nowadays. Novelty beanie lids aside, find the helmet that fits you best and you'll keep your melon happy and safe.

Shark helmets are DOT and ECE certified, just not Snell. But you are right, proper fit of any quality helmet is very important. I consider the thousand bucks I spent on 2 helmets to be money well spent.

That was the case with my Schuberth C1 as well. It was far and away the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn. The newer C2 doesn't seem to fit me as well, unfortunately, so I've had to look elsewhere. The Vemar I'm wearing currently is very nice, though I didn't realize until after I'd bought it that the liner was not removable. I have to wear a do-rag now to keep lid stink to a minimum.

The do-rag thing (like, Sweat-Vac or equivalent) has the advantage of keeping your do oh so purty too. At least recoverable when you hit the office.

Anybody with the expensive lids find you are more reluctant to replace the helmet when maaaaybe you should? Or no effect? Obvious damage aside of course. Just wondering.
