People love to vent on BadWeb about how their ULY left them stranded and how their last bike, Brand X, never did that. Well, here's where "putting things in perspective" is needed. You can darn well be certain that if there is a Brand X equivalent to BadWeb then there are Brand X riders lamenting about Brand X leaving them stranded on the side of the road. My 2006 ULY has been on quite a few trips and has never so much as hiccuped on these trips. I had a rear plug foul out at 5000 miles on the odometer a few blocks from my home and I chalk that up to throttle blipping. No more blipping, no more fouling.

There are around 7000 ULY bikes out there and a few have problems now and then. Riders love to "Warn" others about problems that they had that they are convinced every other ULY bike is sure to suffer. I remember the guy going on and on about fuel pumps and how every ULY was about to experience this same catastrophe. Guess what, didn't happen. Maybe my bike will spontaneously combust on my Sturgis trip this week. If it does, I'll be sure to warn you, "that soon all your bikes will be nothing but char".

I remember the exact same thing, I also said its nothing to worry about. Hell I had my swing arm crack, but even when other people posted concerns about their swing arm, I told them not to worry about it, as I got the Friday afternoon one.

Speak for yourselves, my Blast, Firebolt, and Ulysses have given me ~36,000 DREAD-FILLED MILES. TERRIFYING.

I'm just waiting for the catastrophe(s). ; )

Man, I tell you what, one time I dislocated my hip playing football, and I couldn't stand up. I was pissed that my legs left me stranded. You're all going to have this happen to you soon, so watch out...

My City-X left me hanging last week. For about a second and a half (seemed like a lifetime) There was a three foot void in the MUD where my bike launched and went air borne.
Be warned, rolling on the throttle on a bermed up hill climb will launch you, there should be warning labels or something. What is Buell doing to stop this from happening to others ? ; )

I think the percentage of us crazy enough to do that is small enough that you're not a legal liability.

...in other words, the cost of the recall action would outweigh the cost of the lawsuit payouts. ; )

My Ulysses left me stranded last week. Couldn't get it to start at all no matter how hard I tried. Then I realized - I don't own one... yet.

My Honda VFR owning friend constantly warned me that my Uly was a POS and would self-immolate and soon.
The talk stopped after his VFR ignited (under the seat electrical fire) and turned his ride into char.

LOL...sadly, this picture never seemed to make it onto BadWeb, but I will cherish the memory for all of my days:

Standing in the parking lot at the Sheraton at Homecoming Friday afternoon, and seeing a Honda CBR1000 pull into the lot amidst the sea of Buells, spewing smoke everywhere. I ran over as the guy got off and kneeled to take a look, and sure enough he had a hole in his radiator and was shooting coolant directly into the fan and all over the front of the engine.

I offered to get my tools out so we could take the fairing off and get a better look at it, and his slightly chilly response was, "I don't work on my bike."

Darthane,
The only guy I remember riding a Honra was this character that kinda looked like Tom Cruise and was covered in tatoos. The one on his back was the muscled dude from the Spartan movie, "The 300".

He showed up at the Buell factory and was standing around all day with his shirt off showing off the tats. It would be kinda funny if that was the guy with the holed radiator. Now that's water cooled.

My Uly has busted a few times. I don't think it's unreliable compared to other bikes I've owned - none of them has been capable of being abused like the Uly has been.

You have to take it all on balance - The intarnet presents highly distilled essence of problems - nobody posts: rode for 12 months and nothing went wrong.

Rode to lunch, came back safe. Turkey bacon club, with a glass of sweet tea.
56 miles.

Oh crap! My hips and legs are starting to show signs of this.
How many miles were you able to get before you blew your hip?
I want to have an idea of just how far I can go before I need to buy a crane to put me on/off my bike : D

If I had known then what I know now I would have bought the extended body limbs & parts warranty.

Might have been the same guy - he wasn't all that tall, probably a couple inches shorter than me (I'm 5'11"), and did have the dark, long, wavy hair thing going on. The CBR was yellow, red, and white, I think? He was from Jersey - he mentioned putting it in the trailer to take it back.

...sadly, I don't own a copy. I HAVE read it, though. =D

I've had just about every single ailment known to Ulydom.

My bike has only left me stranded once. I was able to get a jump start to an O'Reiley's to get a new battery and limp it home.

The measure of a motorcycle isn't whether it never breaks but how known and predictable the weak points are. If I know that the bearings are apt to fail after 10,000 miles, I will change them more frequently. If I know the belt is more likely to fail with hard use, I will change it more frequently. If the charging system has weaknesses, I will monitor it.

Perspective: How true. I have very high expectations for my Uly after 95K trouble free miles on an FJ1200, a bike that never stranded me. As I recall those years and what a rush that beast was, it's easy to overlook the Yamaha's brittle fairing fasteners, stripped oil drain plug, cracked oil filter housing, leaky output shaft seal, leaky valve seals, stripped output shaft, warped rotors, trashed clutch basket, as well as the regular maintenance exercise with filthy, noisy chains, worn sprockets, valve shims, cover gaskets, etc. Some stuff broke, other stuff just wore out. +1 to Ft_B and the others... know your bike, be prepared, but get out and ride.
