Any input as to the usefullness of swapping the XB9 primary setup into the Uly?

Would seem to be a decent adidition to slow speed/technical challenged dirt/gravel situations.

Most people that do it love it, I personally would rather go the other way and have a taller gear cause i slab too much. Many report getting the same gas mileage, while my own tests by not going into 5th gear showed a reduction of about 5-7mpg.

We did basically the same conversion on an 06 Cop Glide and it made a world of difference in the mid-range characteristics of the old cop bike.

Increased RPM by 250 - 300 at 70 mph, but actually increased fuel mileage by 2 mpg, go figure.

I did the change in March, after I fried my clutch on a fire road last fall.
I generally like it, and have not noticed any major change to MPG (still close to 50mpg in my average riding).
It makes for a jumpy start, as you have a LOT of low end with this lower gearing.
Gives the feeling of improved mid-range throttle response, with the tightened up gear ratios.

My pairing of this change with a new Energy One clutch may be causing the problem, though. The clutch seems very grabby, and can cause unexpected tire chirping on take offs or after coasting down with the clutch in, and letting the clutch back out.

I do not regret the gearing change, but may consider a clutch pack change to see if that helps, if I cannot adjust my way out of this, or get used to it.
The Energy One came with a 15% stiffer diaphragm spring, so my first change might be to go back to the stock spring.

I like being able to go slower (15mph)without the bike being so jerky, or needing the clutch.
I live in the mountains, so I do not spend all day on the interstate.
I am fine cruising at 70-75mph when I am on the interstate, and I think I am running about 3700-3800 rpm @ 70mph indicated, with the XB9 gearing.

Thanks for the update.

Sounds like the lower gearing will be beneficial to those who ride 2 up, or heavyly loaded.

Starting out and low speed should be a bit better with the lower gearing.

I did it to mine and I LOVE IT! I do a lot of riding in the woods and some sand. The lower gearing helps me a lot. It makes wheelies easier too The lower gearing will cut some off the top end, but it doesn't bother me. I still find myself cruising with a gear to go. I'd rather have the low end for control in the dirt.
The swap isn't that hard. It just takes time for a NON mechanic like myself. BIG torque wrench is a must.

I went to the XB9 primary gearing in March and have put just over 6000 miles on it so far. I think the bike should come this way - it is a significant improvement in low end and midrange throttle response, and oddly enough, gas mileage even at cruising speed. Someone in an earlier post recommended buying the rotor and primary sprocket as an assembly rather than buying the sprocket alone and installing it on the existing rotor. I'd second that. I ended up cracking one of the magnets on the rotor trying to press on the new sprocket.

I changed mine out and love it.

I never used the top end on the bike, so losing a bit up there doesn't affect me. On the highway, which is a rare thing for me, I can cruise at 80mph with the engine turning at about 4500rpm.

Down on the bottom end, it just does everything so much nicer. Better control in the dirt, better pull off the line, better pull outta the corners. Yeah, as stated before, this is the gearing the Uly should have from the factory.

On thing to watch. If you have an 08, remember the change in crank diameter. It engine gear is NOT the same as for the 06/07 and it does come with the rotor already assembled.

I just bought the 9 set up for my race bike and ended up bouncing off the Rev-limiter to much and changed it back.

Make me a fair offer and its yours if ya want it.
It has about 20 miles of Mid-Ohio on it....

Slow speed technical riding aside, amid other changes we put the XB9 primary on our rave XB12TT and ran it up Pikes Peak in the Race to the Clouds this year. 115mph in the dirt at 12,000 feet gets your attention. Race laves at 9,200ft, traverses 12.42 miles with 156 turns, nearly half pavement, half dirt, end ends at 14,111 ft at the summit.

Skyclad- just to confirm, the 08 XB9 has the larger crank like the 1203? So as long as you order an 08+ setup you're good to go?

I think this mod is in my winter projects list.

are you sure the spline part is different on the 08?
i had heard that also, but i have a brand new gear and rotor that i just bought for my 08 bike...i also have one for an older model gear and they appear to be identical...
im thinking its just the attachment method might be different, im not sure...

i have sold my xb and am thinking about buying an 06 without the low rpm stumble...if i dont, i will put the gear, rotor and chain on ebay soon...
