I am thinking about replacing my Lightning with an XT. If I did this I would want to take off the top box and rack. I was looking at one at the dealer today & it looked like it is just a matter of removing some bolts under the frame. I know that the side case brackets are a pain to mess with, but it looks like the top box rack goes on and off easily. Is this true?

You got it, there are 4 contact points that need to be removed. It is an easy and straight forward process to remove the rear rack.

Of course the top case easily snaps off the rack with the turn of a key.

The only non-cosmetic advantage to removing the top rack itself is that the Triple Tail can swing all the way back if you want.

I kept my top case for my X in the box for over a year but had the rack the whole time, it's good to strap stuff to sometimes.

Here's where it bolts to the side case racks:

I leave my side cases off and keep my junk in the trunk.

Ditto...you can pack a lot of crap in the topcase. I'm lovin' it. On the rare occasions I need to tote my tools around, they just get bungied onto the pillion. =D
